This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 739 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present work, it is hoped, will supply a want long felt in the literature of the Catacombs. That literature, it is true, is very voluminous; but it is for the most part locked up in rare and costly folios in foreign languages, and inaccessible to the general reader. Recent discoveries have refuted some of the theories and corrected many of the statements of previous books in English on this subject; and the present volume is the only one in which the latest results of exploration are fully given, and interpreted from a Protestant point of view. The writer has endeavored to illustrate the subject by frequent pagan sepulchral inscriptions, and by citations from the writings of the Fathers, which often throw much light on the condition of early Christian society. The value of the work is greatly enhanced, it is thought, by the addition of many hundreds of early Christian inscriptions carefully translated, a very large proportion of which have never before appeared in English. Those only who have given some attention to epigraphical studies can conceive the difficulty of this part of the work. The defacements of time, and frequently the original imperfection of the inscriptions and the ignorance of their writers, demand the utmost carefulness to avoid errors of interpretation. The writer has been fortunate in being assisted by the veteran scholarship of the Rev. Dr. McCaul, well known in both Europe and America as one of the highest living authorities in epigraphical science, under whose critical revision most of the translations have passed. Through the enterprise of the publishers this work is more copiously illustrated, from original and other sources, than any other work on the subject in the language; thus giving more correct and vivid impressions of the unfamiliar scenes and objects delineated than is possible by any mere verbal description. References are given, in the foot-notes, to the principal authorities quoted, but specific acknowledgment should here be made of the authorÕs indebtedness to the Cavaliere De RossiÕs Roma Sotterranea and Inscriptiones Christian¾, by far the most important works on this fascinating but difficult subject. Believing that the testimony of the Catacombs exhibits, more strikingly than any other evidence, the immense contrast between primitive Christianity and modern Romanism, the author thinks no apology necessary for the somewhat polemical character of portions of this book which illustrate that fact. He trusts that it will be found a contribution of some value to the historical defense of the truth against the corruptions and innovations of Popish error.

Book excerpt: Visual Diagnosis and Care of the Patient with Special Needs provides a thorough review of the eye and vision care needs of patients with special needs. This book gives you a better understanding of the most frequently encountered developmental and acquired disabilities seen in the eye care practitioner's office. These disabilities include patients with autism, brain injury, Fragile X syndrome and Down syndrome, as well as those with psychiatric illness, dual diagnosis, and more. The text discusses, in great detail, the visual issues inherent in these populations and their possible treatment. A group of authors with approximately 500 years of experience in the field of eye care and special populations have been brought together to develop this comprehensive reference. It may appear that this book is written primarily for eye care practitioners such as optometrists and ophthalmologists, while vision is the overriding topic, this book serves as an excellent resource for a multitude of professions including those engaged in occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech and language therapy, physiatry, social work, pediatric medicine, and special education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique exploration of the character, the author, and the many transformations of Alice in modern culture—often in edgy and menacing ways. The Dark Side of Alice in Wonderland is the first investigation of the vast range of darker, more threatening aspects of this famous story, and the way Alice has been transformed over time. Although the children’s story has been in print for over 150 years, the mysteries and rumors surrounding the story and its creator Lewis Carroll have continued to grow. Alice has been transformed—this is the Alice of horror films, Halloween, murder and mystery, spectral ghosts, political satire, mental illnesses, weird feasts, Lolita, Tarot, pornography, and steampunk. The Beatles based famous songs such as “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” and “I am the Walrus” on Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, and she has even attracted the attention of world-famous artists including Salvador Dali. The Japanese version of Lolita is so different from that of novelist Vladimir Nabokov—yet both are based on Alice. This is Alice in Wonderland as you have never seen her before: a dark, sometimes menacing, and threatening character. Was Carroll all that he seemed? The stories of his child friends, nude photographs, and sketches affect the way modern audiences look at the writer. Was he just a lonely academic, a closet pedophile, a brilliant puzzle maker—or even Jack the Ripper? For a book that began life as a simple children’s story, it has resulted in a vast array of dark concepts, ideas, and mysteries. With this book, you can step inside the world of Alice in Wonderland—and discover a dark side you never knew existed.

William Phelps is one of America's most celebrated true crime authorities. In WE THOUGHT WE KNEW YOU, he takes readers deep into the murder of Mary Yoder, a popular wife, mother, and healer in Upstate New York -- telling a gripping tale of a family drama, a determined investigation, and a killer with the face of an angel. In July 2015, Mary Yoder returned home from the chiropractic center that she operated with her husband, Bill, complaining that she felt unwell. Mary, health-conscious and vibrant, was suddenly vomiting, sweating, and weak. Doctors in the ER and ICU were baffled as to the cause of her rapidly progressing illness. Her loved ones--including Bill and their children, Adam, Tamryn, and Liana--gathered in shock to say goodbye. In the weeks that followed Mary's death, the grief-stricken family received startling news from the medical examiner: Mary had been deliberately poisoned. The lethal substance was colchicine, a chemical used to treat gout but extremely toxic if not taken as prescribed. Mary did not have gout. Another bombshell followed when the local sheriff's office received a claim that Adam Yoder had poisoned his mother. But Adam was not the only person of interest in the case. Pretty and popular Kaitlyn Conley, Adam's ex-girlfriend, worked at the Yoders' clinic. She'd even been at Mary's bedside during those last terrible hours. Still, some spoke of her talent for manipulation and a history of bizarre, rage-fueled behavior against anyone who dared to reject her. Had Kaitlyn and Adam conspired to kill Mary Yoder, or was the killer someone else entirely? In another twist, accusations were hurled at Bill Yoder himself, ricocheting blame in still another direction... Renowned investigative journalist M. William Phelps details this incredible story piece by piece, revealing a heartless plan of revenge--a scheme that would tear a family apart, divide a community, and result in two gripping, high-profile trials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, perhaps better termed Toxically Induced Lack of Tolerance, can be a devastating condition that leads to economic hardship and isolation, not only from the outside world but from friends and family. The wide range of symptoms and the differences between sufferers make it an enigmatic condition to patient and physician alike. Like Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (M.E.) once was, it is not always accepted as a physical illness. The aim of this book is to inform and help sufferers and create awareness in those around them. It is also hoped that it will achieve recognition of the condition among health professionals. The book is split into four sections: a description of the condition, a commentary on environmental chemicals past and present, accounts of experiences from those effected and a large advice section on how best to live with the condition and minimise toxic encounters. Within the book, there is an ample glossary, lists of further reading suggestions and useful addresses and an exhaustive index to aid ease of access to specifics and for cross-referencing. Spaces are provided between subjects for the addition of notes, comments and further information as it becomes available. The writer, Evelyn Todd, was first affected by chemical sensitivity at the age of eleven but was not diagnosed until this century. During later years, she has made a study of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity and this book is of the fruits of this and her own experience. Apart from sufferers and their families, The Invisible Prison should be read by those who have dealings with the general public, particularly all who work in health care in any capacity.
