After many years in public education, where she specialized in Human Resource Management, she lives and writes on the Central Coast of California. Description of My Book Discover a ghost who frightened people away from her barn. Meet the lonely deputy sheriff who doesn’t believe in that spiritual nonsense and who is going to live in the adjacent house no matter what. Complicate matters with the deputy’s ex-wife, who thinks he may have discovered gold on his property, and the waitress who is generous to a fault—not to mention the attractive sheriff’s dispatcher who is married to her work until the ghost… What drives the specter to behave the way she does? What passion, what mystery stirs her to action? The dead woman’s story describes vividly the trials and sacrifices made by the emigrants of the 1840s, and adds the excitement of first love, a possible robbery, and a murder—all touching the young woman’s family. The deputy becomes determined to help her find the buried box that will put her fears to rest. What they find is not what she expected.

Page 9 of 25 In Summary: "Stella's Stellar Adventure" is a sweet story about friendship, discovery, and wonder that takes kids on an amazing journey through space. We meet Stella at the beginning of the story. She is a little girl who is very interested in the night sky. She sees a comet cutting through the sky, which changes her life in an exciting way. Its mysterious beauty interests her. Stella sets out on an epic trip to find out more about the comet. Stella's loyal robot friend stays with her as she continues her journey through space. Their trip is an ode to the universe's wonders and the desire to find new things. In a secret valley on Mars, they find mysteries. On the Moon, old whispers tell them stories about the universe. On Mars, they dance through an asteroid belt where each rock hums its own cosmic tune. As the couple speeds through Saturn's rings, they see how stars are formed in a beautiful cloud, hear the comet they've been following sing by itself, and almost get sucked into an unimaginable black hole. Stella learns new things and faces new challenges in each area, which helps her grow and understand the world better. Stella and her robot have their most important contact on a faraway planet, where they learn from friendly aliens about how all living things are connected and different at the same time. Like the other meetings, this one stresses unity, bravery, and the insatiable human need to know and understand the unknown. She comes back to Earth at the end of her trip through the galaxy, full of amazing stories and lessons she learned while she was away. Stella is still very interested in learning, even though the trip is over. After she gets back, she sees the night sky not as a faraway work of art that she can't understand, but as a call to endless journeys and chances. "Stella's Stellar Adventure" tells kids to have big dreams, value their relationships, and always ask questions about the world they live in. It's not just a story about going into space. Stella thinks of the world as a beautiful, interesting, and never-ending place to learn. This makes her think of the journey that people who are brave enough to look beyond will go on. Page 10 of 25 Chapter 1: Comet's Night. Stella was amazed as she looked up at the sky on a clear, quiet night. The stars were shining like tiny lanterns, and the sky was a deep dark blue. On this particular night, she saw something very beautiful. The sky was filled with a comet that was as bright as the moon. Its tail flashed with colors Stella had never seen before, leaving a bright path of color behind it. As it moved through space, the comet left behind a sparkling path where red, blue, green, and purple colors mixed. Stella felt a spark of excitement ignite inside her. She was full of wonder and couldn't stop asking questions. She said, "I have to find out where it's going." She thought the comet was calling to her, luring her to go on an exciting journey with its mysterious beauty and hypnotic path. Stella knew that this was a unique chance to see something in the universe. She was very interested in following the comet, figuring out what it was, and figuring out its path. Stella saw the comet going through asteroid belts and cosmic clouds, above planets and stars, and deeper into the unknown with each second that went by. With its rainbow of colors, the comet's tail looked like a map of the universe's secrets and undiscovered wonders. Each glimmer could help us figure out one of the secrets that lie beyond. Stella was excited about the idea of going on a space journey to follow the comet and learn about the stories it might hold. Stella made a choice that would change her life because she liked to try new things and was eager to learn. She wouldn't just watch the comet from her garden; she would go after it, going into space to follow its tail and find out where it was going. Stella stuck to her promise, even though the idea was controversial and might be dangerous. She was ready to go on an amazing trip to find new places and learn about the universe's great mysteries. After she made her choice, Stella's mind was full of plans and thoughts. How could she find the comet? What secrets would she find along the way? Without a doubt, the trip would be hard and full of both pleasures and difficulties. Stella, on the other hand, showed no fear. She liked to try new things and was very interested in the universe, so she was ready to take on anything it had to offer. On the night of the comet, she felt like she wanted to learn more about the world and figure out its mysteries again. She was about to start her trip through space. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bold new look at war and diplomacy in Europe that traces the idea of a unified continent in attempts since the eighteenth century to engineer lasting peace. Political peace in Europe has historically been elusive and ephemeral. Stella Ghervas shows that since the eighteenth century, European thinkers and leaders in pursuit of lasting peace fostered the idea of European unification. Bridging intellectual and political history, Ghervas draws on the work of philosophers from Abbé de Saint-Pierre, who wrote an early eighteenth-century plan for perpetual peace, to Rousseau and Kant, as well as statesmen such as Tsar Alexander I, Woodrow Wilson, Winston Churchill, Robert Schuman, and Mikhail Gorbachev. She locates five major conflicts since 1700 that spurred such visionaries to promote systems of peace in Europe: the War of the Spanish Succession, the Napoleonic Wars, World War I, World War II, and the Cold War. Each moment generated a “spirit” of peace among monarchs, diplomats, democratic leaders, and ordinary citizens. The engineers of peace progressively constructed mechanisms and institutions designed to prevent future wars. Arguing for continuities from the ideals of the Enlightenment, through the nineteenth-century Concert of Nations, to the institutions of the European Union and beyond, Conquering Peace illustrates how peace as a value shaped the idea of a unified Europe long before the EU came into being. Today the EU is widely criticized as an obstacle to sovereignty and for its democratic deficit. Seen in the long-range perspective of the history of peacemaking, however, this European society of states emerges as something else entirely: a step in the quest for a less violent world.

Book excerpt: Moral Complexities in Turn of the Millennium British Literature offers a critical analysis of moral complexity and social responsibility in works by Kazuo Ishiguro, Patrick McGrath, Graham Swift, Andrea Levy, and Jeanette Winterson. Mara Reisman argues that through their writing, these authors reveal and upset literary, cultural, and political fictions and encourage readers to think carefully about language, power, community, and social justice. The book examines moral issues in two different ways: how books by these authors address morally complex social, political, and cultural issues and how their books serve a moral function by challenging readers to be socially engaged. Reisman provides an in-depth analysis of The Remains of the Day, Asylum, The Light of Day, Small Island, and The Daylight Gate and uses these books to discuss twentieth- and twenty-first-century British politics and culture. These books address a wide variety of issues often associated with moral judgments: war, racism, adultery, maternal neglect, murder, professional misconduct, witchcraft, and religion. Despite this diversity and settings that range from the seventeenth century to the late twentieth century, these books include similar arguments about how empathy, personal responsibility, and civic engagement can create more productive social relations and a less divided world.

Book excerpt: It should have been a time for healing and rebirth… Forced to leave an earth devastated by the spread of Dark Energy, humans of the future head for the planet Zarmina to build a new life. But soon after their arrival, they are faced with another threat to their existence: syconoids. Created first as a unique convergence of thought when hubrid Stella, a cyborg with a human brain, accesses a network of computers back on Earth, this new form of artificial intelligence sees itself as a distinct race that needs to replicate and expand. Using the left-behind humanoid factories on Earth, this communal intelligence creates a physical manifestation of itself—fully sentient, free-thinking syconoids with a superior intellect and body design—and sets out to become the dominant force in the universe. Yet the syconoids soon discover they still need humans for one thing: the brains of newborns so they can take their own evolution to a completely new level. While Stella tries to fulfill the unwilling role cast upon her as the “mother” of a new race and still protect her human and hubrid friends, she attempts convince the syconoids to live peacefully on Zarmina. But when they resist, she finds herself having to make a very difficult choice. In this final book of the Retrogress Trilogy, Conner’s exciting plot explores very real issues around the dangers of technology and artificial intelligence and raises the burning questions of what exactly makes us human, and whether we will survive ourselves.

Book excerpt: Immensely popular during her lifetime, the Ango-Irish writer Elizabeth Bowen (1899-1973) has since been treated as a peripheral figure on the literary map. If only in view of her prolific outputten novels, nearly eighty short stories, and a substantial body of non- fictionBowen is a noteworthy novelist. The radical quality of her work, however, renders her an exceptional one. Surfacing in both subject matter and style, her fictions harbor a subversive potential which has hitherto gone unnoticed. Using a wide range of critical theories-from semiotics to psychoanalysis, from narratology to deconstruction-this book presents a radical re-reading of a selection of Bowen's novels from a lesbian feminist perspective. Taking into account both cultural contexts and the author's non-fictional writings, the book's main focus is on configurations of gender and sexuality. Bowen's fiction constitutes an exploration of the unstable and destabilizing effects of sexuality in the interdependent processes of subjectivity and what she herself referred to as so-called reality.
