Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stein and the Era of Reform in Prussia, 1807-1815 The literature of prussian-german history in Eng lish is very scanty and most of it relates to the last seventy-five years. The period covered by this brief biography has been treated by Seeley in his Life and Times of Stein. That diffuse work is nevertheless a very substantial composite of the German historical work available forty years ago. It does a little more for Stein biographically than can be found in Pertz's undigested collection of documents. The appearance of Lehmann's great biography and the controversial literature it aroused and of many special studies and new interpretations of men and of phases of the his tory of the years after Frederick the Great have made both Pertz and Seeley unsatisfactory. With this new material at hand it was clearly worth while to study anew the work of Stein. In doing this I have especially sought to give even in this brief compass a more ade quate account than has hitherto been available in Eng lish of the economic conditions preceding the edict of 1807 and to point out that its importance is as a pro gram rather than as a reorganization of the Prussia of that day. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The arduous path from the colourful diversity of the Holy Roman Empire to the Prussian-dominated German nation-state, Bismarck's German Empire of 1871, led through revolutions, wars and economic upheavals, but also through the cultural splendour of German Classicism and Romanticism. Hagen Schulze takes a fresh look at late eighteenth- and nineteenth-century German history, explaining it as the interaction of revolutionary forces from below and from above, of economics, politics, and culture. None of the results were predetermined, and yet their outcome was of momentous significance for all of Europe, if not the world.
Download or read book Napoleon written by Frank McLynn and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 1127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author McLynn explores the Promethean legend from his Corsican roots, through the chaotic years of the French Revolution and his extraordinary military triumphs, to the coronation in 1804, to his fatal decision in 1812 to add Russia to his seemingly endless conquests, and his ultimate defeat, imprisonment, and death in Saint Helena. McLynn aptly reveals the extent to which Napoleon was both existential hero and plaything of fate, mathematician and mystic, intellectual giant and moral pygmy, great man and deeply flawed human being. As Napoleon’s obsession with his family surfaces and his conviction that every man has his price, the emperor emerges as a figure closer to a modern Mafia godfather than a visionary European. In this work, McLynn brings the reader, as never before, closer to understanding the much mythologized Napoleon.
Book Synopsis Napoleon and the Struggle for Germany: Volume 2, The Defeat of Napoleon by : Michael V. Leggiere
Download or read book Napoleon and the Struggle for Germany: Volume 2, The Defeat of Napoleon written by Michael V. Leggiere and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-04-16 with total page 903 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive history of the decisive Fall Campaign of 1813, which determined control of Central Europe following Napoleon's catastrophic defeat in Russia the previous year. Using German, French, British, Russian, Austrian and Swedish sources, Michael V. Leggiere provides a panoramic history which covers the full sweep of the struggle in Germany. He shows how Prussia, the weakest of the Great Powers, led the struggle against Napoleon and his empire. By reconstructing the principal campaigns and operations in Germany, the book reveals how the defeat of Napoleon in Germany was made possible by Prussian victories. In particular, it features detailed analysis of the strategy, military operations, and battles in Germany that culminated with the epic four-day Battle of Nations at Leipzig and Napoleon's retreat to France. This study not only highlights the breakdown of Napoleon's strategy in 1813, but constitutes a fascinating study in coalition warfare, international relations, and civil-military relations.
