Es werden vier monetäre (Gehalt, Boni, Beteiligungen und Incentives) und sieben geldlose (Kommunikation, Aufgabe, Team, Führungsstil, Work-Life-Balance, Weiterbildung /Beförderung und Entscheidungsfreiheit) Anreize untersucht. Die vorliegende Studie stellt die Hypothese auf, dass geldlose Anreize stärker motivieren als monetäre. Weiterhin wird die Annahme überprüft, dass geldlose Anreize für Frauen eine wichtigere Rolle spielen als für Männer, sowie dass monetäre Anreize Männer stärker motivieren als Frauen. Ferner wird untersucht, ob sich die Präferenzen für Anreize in verschiedenen Stadien der Berufserfahrung verändern. Die Abfrage der Präferenzen wurde mit Hilfe eines für diese Studie konzipierten Fragebogens mit 39 geschlossenen Items durchgeführt. An der Befragung nahmen 343 Frauen und 169 Männer teil, die unterschiedlich viel Berufserfahrung hatten. Die Umfrage ergab, dass sich die Anreizpräferenzen von Frauen und Männern nicht signifikant unterscheiden. Beide Geschlechter werden durch geldlose Anreize grundsätzlich stärker motiviert als durch monetäre Anreize. Eine Ausnahme stellt hier der monetäre Anreiz „Gehalt“ dar, der für beide Geschlechter hohe Bedeutung hat. Die Hypothese, dass sich die Präferenzen für Anreize mit zunehmender Berufserfahrung verschieben, konnte nur für die monetären Anreize bestätigt werden. Monetäre Anreize verlieren mit zunehmender Berufserfahrung an Motivationsstärke; geldlose Anreize bleiben konstant wichtig. Die Schlussfolgerung der Ergebnisse ist, dass die Arbeitgeber neben der Zahlung von Gehalt, geldlosen Anreizen mehr Beachtung schenken müssen. Weiterhin sollten die individuellen Interessen der Mitarbeiter bei der Auswahl der Anreize berücksichtigt werden, damit diese effektiv wirken und die Mitarbeiter langfristig an das Unternehmen gebunden werden können.

Aus diesem Grund wird im Rahmen dieser Ausarbeitung der Versuch unternommen, unter Einbezug relevanter motivationstheoretischer und verhaltenspsychologischer Ansätze zu untersuchen, inwieweit die Möglichkeit der Mitarbeitermotivierung durch betriebliche Anreizsysteme besteht und wo ihre Grenzen liegen.
