Book Synopsis Steering a Middle Course by : Sarwono Kusumaatmadja
Download or read book Steering a Middle Course written by Sarwono Kusumaatmadja and published by ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute. This book was released on 2020-08-17 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born with motor impairment, Sarwono Kusumaatmadja grew up with low self-esteem. Yet, within this awkward, shy boy lay a steely resolve to overcome his weaknesses. It was this same resolve that propelled him to study at high school in the United Kingdom, thousands of miles from his native land. Navigating life on his own in the UK forged Sarwono into an independent and resilient individual; one who never flinched in the face of challenges, but also one who never wanted to play the hero either. His unique character and integrity acted like a magnet for opportunities back home in Indonesia. He was chosen to be Chairman of the University Student Council of the Bandung Institute of Technology even though he did not campaign for it. And when he made it into the national parliament, it was at the behest of the military. He then became Secretary General of Golkar, the country’s ruling party, without having to pull any strings. In taking on all the opportunities that came his way, Sarwono remained true to himself, which later meant saying no to President Soeharto when the latter tried to recruit him to be part of his inner circle.
Book Synopsis The Middle Path of Moderation in Islam by : Mohammad Hashim Kamali
Download or read book The Middle Path of Moderation in Islam written by Mohammad Hashim Kamali and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-18 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the I.R. Iran World Award for Book of the Year In The Middle Path of Moderation in Islam, leading Islamic law expert Mohammad Hashim Kamali examines the concept of wasatiyyah, or moderation, arguing that scholars, religious communities, and policy circles alike must have access to this governing principle that drives the silent majority of Muslims, rather than focusing on the extremist fringe. Kamali explores wasatiyyah in both historical/conceptual terms and in contemporary/practical terms. Tracing the definition and scope of the concept from the foundational sources of Islam, the Qu'ran and Hadith, he demonstrates that wasatiyyah has a long and well-developed history in Islamic law and applies the concept to contemporary issues of global policy, such as justice, women's rights, environmental and financial balance, and globalization. Framing his work as an open dialogue against a now-decades long formulation of the arguably destructive Huntingtonian "clash of civilizations" thesis as well as the public rhetoric of fear of Muslim extremism since the attacks of September 11, 2001, Kamali connects historical conceptions of wasatiyyah to the themes of state and international law, governance, and cultural maladies in the Muslim world and beyond. Both a descriptive and prescriptive meditation on a key but often neglected principle of Islam, The Middle Path of Moderation in Islam provides insight into an idea that is in the strategic interest of the West both to show and practice for themselves and to recognize in Muslim countries.
Download or read book Buddhism written by Cyrus Panjvani and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2013-12-13 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book philosophically introduces the basic truths, doctrines, and principles of Buddhism. Its goal is to explain the teachings of the Buddha and of Buddhism clearly and consistently. Though the book treads beyond the Buddha’s life, including into the Abhidharma and Mahayana traditions, it remains throughout a philosophical discussion and elaboration of the Buddha’s thought. It is meant to be an accessible guide for those who have no background in Buddhism, and to be beneficial to the philosophical understanding of those who do.
Book Synopsis The Dao of Translation by : Douglas Robinson
Download or read book The Dao of Translation written by Douglas Robinson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dao of Translation sets up an East-West dialogue on the nature of language and translation, and specifically on the "unknown forces" that shape the act of translation. To that end it mobilizes two radically different readings of the Daodejing (formerly romanized as the Tao Te Ching): the traditional "mystical" reading according to which the Dao is a mysterious force that cannot be known, and a more recent reading put forward by Sinologists Roger T. Ames and David L. Hall, to the effect that the Dao is simply the way things happen. Key to Ames and Hall’s reading is that what makes the Dao seem both powerful and mysterious is that it channels habit into action—or what the author calls social ecologies, or icoses. The author puts Daoism (and ancient Confucianism) into dialogue with nineteenth-century Western theorists of the sign, Charles Sanders Peirce and Ferdinand de Saussure (and their followers), in order to develop an "icotic" understanding of the tensions between habit and surprise in the activity of translating. The Dao of Translation will interest linguists and translation scholars. This book will also engage researchers of ancient Chinese philosophy and provide Western scholars with a thought-provoking cross-examination of Eastern and Western perspectives.

Download or read book Illegal Transactions written by Nelson Enonchong and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-10-28 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concerned with the area of illegal transactions, this text addresses practical issues, for example: who can raise the issue of illegality?; must illegality be pleaded? And when can a party recover money or property transferred pursuant to an illegal transaction? Divided into three main sections the text: deals with illegality as a defence to claims in various departments of the civil law; and examines the forfeiture rule as a tool which one party could compel another to disgorge profits which the other has acquired or would otherwise acquire from his illegal conduct. The third section of the text discusses the circumstances when, by way of exception, the court will enforce the claim of a person even though that person has been guilty of an illegality. Overall the text provides an account of the illegalities in civil law and a critical analysis of the current rules, with suggestions for reform.
