Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The low-energy undulator test line (LEUTL) is being constructed at the Advanced Photon Source (APS). Its first purpose is to fully characterize innovative, future generation undulators, some of which may prove difficult or impossible to measure by traditional techniques. Second, LEUTL will act as a test line to investigate the generation of coherent radiation at wavelengths down to a few tens of nanometers. The line will use a high-brightness rf electron gun as its source and the APS linac to accelerate these electrons up to>650 MeV. This beam will then be directed into a new enclosure that is nearly 50 m long and will accommodate beamline components, diagnostics, and undulators. This region is wide enough to house two separate beamlines. In addition, there is an external end station appropriate for housing the equipment necessary to directly study the generated light outside of the radiation environment. At present, the new enclosure and building are complete, the new rf electron gun is installed and operational, and a part of the necessary transport line is installed. An undulator cell prototype, suitable for testing the requirements of single-pass free-electron laser operation, is near completion and will be installed during the winter shutdown of 1997. This paper will describe the LEUTL project and its capability for exploring the self-amplified spontaneous emission process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are a number of fully commissioned 3rd-generation synchrotron light sources in the world today. So far they have met the demanding requirements of the user community; however, there is always a desire to go beyond what is presently available or even desirable. The Advanced Photon Source (APS) Low-Energy Undulator Test Line (LEUTL) was conceived to address the advancement of synchrotron light sources. The LEUTL uses the existing APS linac and a low-emittance electron gun, and by means of measurements of the beam and generated light, will test new and innovative undulators and push the technology and physics of single-pass, coherent light sources. The design and status of the LEUTL will be described along with its immediate capabilities and those planned for the future.

Book excerpt: The 22nd International Free Electron Laser Conference and 7th FEL User Workshop were held August 13-18, 2000 at Washington Duke Inn and Golf Club in Durham, North Carolina, USA. The conference and the workshop were hosted by Duke University's Free Electron laser (FEL) Laboratory. Following tradition, the FEL prize award was announced at the banquet. The year 2000 FEL prize was awarded to three scientists propelling the limits of high power FELs: Steven Benson, Eisuke Minehara and George Neill. The conference program was comprised of traditional oral sessions on First Lasing, FEL theory, storage ring FELs, linac and high power FELs, long wavelength FELs, SASE FELs, accelerator and FEL physics and technology, and new developments and proposals. Two sessions on accelerator and FEL physics and technology reflected the emphasis on the high quality of accelerators and components for modern FELs. The breadth of the applications was presented in the workshop oral sessions on materials processing, biomedical and surgical applications, physics and chemistry as well as on instrumentation and methods for FEL applications. A special oral session was dedicated to FEL center status reports for users to learn more about the opportunities with FELs. As usual, the oral sessions were supplemented by poster sessions with in-depth discussions and communications. The FEL physicists and FEL users had excellent opportunities to interact throughout the duration of the event, culminating a Joint Sessions. The year 2000 was very successful being marked by lasing with two SASE and one storage ring short-wavelength FELs, and by the first human surgery with the use of FEL, to mention but a few. The International Program Committee and chairs of the sessions had the challenging and exciting problem of selecting invived and contributed talks for the conferences and the workshop from the influx of abstracts mentioning new results and ideas. The success of the conference was determined by these contributions. Scientists from 15 countries gave 70 talks, presented 176 posters and submitted 146 papers, which are published in the present volume of proceedings.
Book Synopsis Results from the Advanced Photon Source SASE FEL Project by :
Download or read book Results from the Advanced Photon Source SASE FEL Project written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements of self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) at 530 nm were made at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) low-energy undulator test line facility (LEUTL). Exponential growth of the optical signal as a function of distance was measured and compared to theoretical estimates. SASE was first observed using a beam generated from a photocathode rf gun system. It was later repeated using beam from a thermonic rf gun system. Following a brief description of the LEUTL facility, they present their results and initial analysis.

This book was released on 1997 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An alternate configuration of the injector linacs (low-energy undulator test line) at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) combined with a thermionic rf gun is projected to provide low, normalized emittance electron beams ({var_epsilon}{sub n} - 5% mm mrad). By using the electron linac and the inline, rephased positron linac, beam energies from 250 to 650 MeV with bunch lengths sigma?{sub t} - 1 ps are possible. In order to characterize such beams, the present intercepting Chromox screens with limited spatial resolution and temporal response are being complemented by optical transition radiation (OTR) screens at selected positions in the beamline to provide sub-100?m spatial resolution and sub-ps response times. Initial OTR images have been obtained from a beam at 650 MeV using the conventional thermionic gun to generate a 30-ns-long macropulse. Micropulse bunch lengths as short as 3 to 4 ps were also measured using a C5680 streak camera. Additionally, coherent transition radiation (CTR) and diffraction radiation (DR) based techniques will be evaluated. These beam characterizations will support self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) scaling experiments.
