Book excerpt: To appreciate the value of the concept of the townland the best course for us is to examine in detail every aspect of one or more of them in terms of our own existence. In local history studies we concentrate on the community that has lived in the townland. This publication will introduce the reader to the documentary sources that survive in archivies and explain how they can be related to the traditions, the artefacts and the oral evidence. It will provide a framework plus numerous worked examples for those with an interest in studying the townland where their ancestors lived. Set as a basis upon which further research could be undertaken this important study begins by choosing eight townlands across Ulster providing a variety of concepts, ideas and observations which will interest the family and local historian alike. Indeed the editors in their introduction observe, that just as local historians, not just those with a special interest in local and family hsitory, to appreciate the significance of the townland in Irish history. The townlands covered in this study include: Forttown, Co. Antrim; Scolboa, Co. Antrim; Ballymagee, Co. Down; Cranfield, Co. Down; Drumskinny 3 & Montiaghroe, Co. Fermanagh; Gallan, Co. Tyrone; Holly-hill, Co. Tyrone; and Owenreagh, Co. Londonderry. In casting their net wide the contributors have managed to build up a picture of townlands across the country and have ensured that this book is representative of the whole of Ulster and not any single part or even merely the eight townlands under study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The close ties between the people and the land in Ulster has only, within the last two generations, been replaced by a more urban 'modern'lifestyle. This study of the farms and farming families,on two thousand acres of hilly terrain in two adjacent townlands, Edymore and Cavanlee, south-east of Strabane overlooking the river Mourne, is a model in local studies. The story is based on research in one of the greatest collections of estate records in Britain or Ireland, the Abercorn Papers in the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland. Before 1600 the land belonged to the great O'Neill clan. After the Plantation, it was granted to the Abercorn family and the land devided into small farms, and over the ensueing centuries the farmers created well-run and profitable mixed farms. At the beginning of the twentieth century families at last had the chance to own the land their forebears had, as tenants, tilled for generations. Some farms expanded, some stayed the same size: what links them all is that the family unit remained as the cement that held them together and bound them to the land. The development of the farms and the lives of four of the longest-surviving families are retraced in absorbing detail, so to is the social fabric which linked town and country. Strabane, less than an hour's walk away, was a focal point for markets, education and social activities. The writer's own family connections with the townlands over the last fifty years provide the homely touch that gives this book such a distinctive charm.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the first Africans arrived in Virginia in 1619, there were no “white” people there. Nor, according to colonial records, would there be for another sixty years. In this seminal two-volume work, The Invention of the White Race, Theodore W. Allen tells the story of how America’s ruling classes created the category of the “white race” as a means of social control. Since that early invention, white privileges have enforced the myth of racial superiority, and that fact has been central to maintaining ruling-class domination over ordinary working people of all colors throughout American history. Volume I draws lessons from Irish history, comparing British rule in Ireland with the “white” oppression of Native Americans and African Americans. Allen details how Irish immigrants fleeing persecution learned to spread racial oppression in their adoptive country as part of white America. Since publication in the mid-nineties, The Invention of the White Race has become indispensable in debates on the origins of racial oppression in America. In this updated edition, scholar Jeffrey B. Perry provides a new introduction, a short biography of the author and a study guide.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive, tour-de-force analysis of the birth of slavery, racism, and white supremacy in the American South—and how it shaped our modern world. “A must-read for all social justice activists, teachers, and scholars.” —Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz, author of An Indigenous Peoples’ History of the United States Long heralded as a classic study of the origin of white privilege from the activist who first coined the term, Theodore W. Allen’s work remains an indispensable resource for making sense of our conflicted present, a reference point for everyone from Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz and Nell Irvin Painter to Reni-Eddo Lodge and Aníbal Quijano. When the first Africans arrived in Virginia in 1619, there were no “white” people there. Nor, according to colonial records, would there be for another sixty years. In this seminal work, available for the first time here in a single volume, Allen tells how America’s ruling classes created the category of the “white race” as a means of social control. Since that early invention, white privileges have enforced the myth of racial superiority, a fact central to maintaining rulingclass domination over ordinary working people of all colors throughout the history of the Atlantic world. Spanning centuries and nations, Allen’s analysis takes us from the plantations of Northern Ireland and the mines of Peru to the sugar fields of Brazil and colonies of Chesapeake Bay, Virginia. His account records lives of hardscrabble immigrant survival, Faustian bargains with white supremacy, the tragedy of human bondage, and the stubborn, unbreakable resistance to the global color line.

Book excerpt: This book traces the history of food and famine in Ireland from the sixteenth to the early twentieth century. It looks at what people ate and drank, and how this changed over time. The authors explore the economic and social forces which lay behind these changes as well as the more personal motives of taste, preference, and acceptability. They analyze the reasons why the potato became a major component of the diet for so many people during the eighteenth century as well as the diets of the middling and upper classes. This is not, however, simply a social history of food but it is a nutritional one as well, and the authors go on to explore the connection between eating, health, and disease. They look at the relationship between the supply of food and the growth of the population and then finally, and unavoidably in any history of the Irish and food, the issue of famine, examining first its likelihood and then its dreadful reality when it actually occurred.
