Book Synopsis India Rural Infrastucture Report by : National Council of Applied Economic Research
Download or read book India Rural Infrastucture Report written by National Council of Applied Economic Research and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2007-01-12 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on primary data collected through a nationwide survey, the report aims to resolve some of the contradictions that have stymied the expansion of infrastructure in rural India with the aim of encouraging balanced regional growth of rural infrastructure. It proposes - Forming public-private partnerships - Greater decentralisation of regulation and ownership - Greater reliance on user fees to recover costs - Greater use of microfinance This is a definitive report on the state of rural infrastructure in the four major sectors of power, telecommunications, roads and transport, and water and sanitation. Given that the solutions to rural infrastructure problems are necessarily going to be unique in rural areas, where people are already underserved, this study focusing on rural infrastructure is valuable in that it advocates for new financing methods; attracting new players to provide services; adopting new policies to support privatisation and decentralisation of infrastructure services. In sum, it outlines a financially sustainable and inventive new approach.

Book excerpt: Restoring the health of the land is indispensable not only because it is the ground of our sustenance and survival, but also land has in itself the inherent worth. This book challenges humanity's indulgence, and activities of development, science and technology, and insists for human responsibility and moral duties towards the land, the sustaining mother earth, which is abused, ransacked of its wealth, and ignored of its intrinsic value. The study attempts to bring together perspectives and values that are important for preserving the rights of the land, and proposes the contour of a land ethic.

Book Synopsis Informal Labour in Urban India by : Tom Barnes
Download or read book Informal Labour in Urban India written by Tom Barnes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-17 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last two decades, rapid economic growth and development in India has been based upon the mass employment of informal labour. Using case studies from three urban regions, this book examines this growth in modern India’s cities and towns. It argues that India has undergone a process of uneven and combined development during its integration with the world economy, leading to a distorted form of urban development. This book is about work and resistance in India’s massive ‘informal economy’. It looks at the growth of informal labour in Bangalore, Mumbai and New Delhi during an era of neoliberal economic policymaking. Going beyond mainstream accounts, it argues that India’s rapid economic development has been based upon the mass employment of workers on low wages who lack basic social protection and rights at work. It discusses how urban development in India is characterised by a combination of industrialisation, industrial relocation, restructuring and informalisation. Departing from some existing studies of de-industrialisation, it re-frames informalisation as a process that complements, rather than contradicts, contemporary industrialisation in rapidly-emerging economies. The book adopts a ‘classes of labour’ approach, classifying each case of informal labour as a specific ‘form of exploitation’: as a different way for employers to lower production costs, control workers and increase enterprise flexibility. Offering a critique of existing data on the measurement and monitoring of informal labour and employment, the book is relevant to students and scholars of Development Studies, International Political Economy and South Asian Studies.

Book Synopsis Maharashtra Human Development Report 2012: TOWARDS INCLUSIVE HUMAN DEVELOPMENT by : Jayachandran Usha
Download or read book Maharashtra Human Development Report 2012: TOWARDS INCLUSIVE HUMAN DEVELOPMENT written by Jayachandran Usha and published by Sage . This book was released on 2014 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present Maharashtra Human Development Report (MHDR) 2012 keeps the spirit of the Eleventh and Twelfth Five Year Plans of ‘faster, sustainable and more inclusive growth’ at the core of its analysis. MHDR 2002 was the state’s first effort in focusing on the prevailing human development scenario in the spheres of growth, poverty, equity, education, health and nutrition. Since then the state has come a long way in the last decade, achieving near-complete enrolments at the primary school level, a wide coverage of health infrastructure and initiation of new incentives, to name a few. The 2012 Report goes beyond being just a situation-analysis of the current human development scenario to a more analytical exercise in facilitating a deeper understanding of what and where the inequalities are, how capabilities can be enhanced, what has been the progress, where the shortfalls are and where the thrust of efforts to promote human development should be. Recognizing the centrality of inclusive growth processes to human development, the need to study human development outcomes disaggregated by gender, rural–urban, regional and social groups is the focal point of this Report. The outcome would be the identification of specific human development goals, evidence-based policy recommendations and directions to how those excluded from the growth and human development processes can be included to reap the benefits of the same.
Book Synopsis Change and Mobility in Contemporary India by : Sobin George
Download or read book Change and Mobility in Contemporary India written by Sobin George and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2019-09-25 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies caste and community dynamics in India and offers a critical view of social mobility from below. Building on the theories of the eminent sociologist M N Srinivas, the essays in this volume reformulate the debate on caste as they document the changing inter-caste dynamics and caste-based violence in contemporary India. The volume showcases the new language of change in caste relations, articulated mostly from the perspective of the marginalised as experiences, differences, contestations, assertions and as citizenship rights. It focusses on the clash between traditional structures of inequality and the ideals of equality and justice in a liberal, democratic India. It also highlights the persistence of caste and endogamy and the interlocking nature of caste, gender and disability, struggles of ethnic groups and informal workers in the market economy, discrimination in the labour market and the dissolution of dissent in the public sphere. With contributions from leading scholars of social change and development in India and abroad, this volume will be useful for scholars and researchers of sociology, social anthropology, minority and subaltern studies, and development studies.
