This book was released on 2020-01-15 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the basic principles for evaluating water quality and treatment plant performance in a clear, innovative and didactic way, using a combined approach that involves the interpretation of monitoring data associated with (i) the basic processes that take place in water bodies and in water and wastewater treatment plants and (ii) data management and statistical calculations to allow a deep interpretation of the data. This book is problem-oriented and works from practice to theory, covering most of the information you will need, such as (a) obtaining flow data and working with the concept of loading, (b) organizing sampling programmes and measurements, (c) connecting laboratory analysis to data management, (e) using numerical and graphical methods for describing monitoring data (descriptive statistics), (f) understanding and reporting removal efficiencies, (g) recognizing symmetry and asymmetry in monitoring data (normal and log-normal distributions), (h) evaluating compliance with targets and regulatory standards for effluents and water bodies, (i) making comparisons with the monitoring data (tests of hypothesis), (j) understanding the relationship between monitoring variables (correlation and regression analysis), (k) making water and mass balances, (l) understanding the different loading rates applied to treatment units, (m) learning the principles of reaction kinetics and reactor hydraulics and (n) performing calibration and verification of models. The major concepts are illustrated by 92 fully worked-out examples, which are supported by 75 freely-downloadable Excel spreadsheets. Each chapter concludes with a checklist for your report. If you are a student, researcher or practitioner planning to use or already using treatment plant and water quality monitoring data, then this book is for you! 75 Excel spreadsheets are available to download.

Book excerpt: Nanobioanalytical Approaches to Medical Diagnostics reviews a range of nanobiomaterials and bioanalytical nano-devices for medical diagnostics. Nanobiomaterials and nano-devices are used in various bioanalytical and biochemical systems to provide real-time, point-of-care diagnostics. The specialized properties of nanoparticles allow them to be engineered and adapted to produce the required effect within a bioanalytical or biochemical system – offering targeted and detailed diagnostic results in a range of biomedical applications. This book covers both traditional biochemical and modern, combined nano-approaches to medical diagnostics. Chapters detail a range of in vitro, in vivo and ex vivo models for nanobioanalytics, including DNA and peptide-based, erythrocyte, microfluidic and more. In addition, sections also look at various different medical diagnostic applications, such as in cancer detection, infectious disease diagnosis and blood glucose sensing. - Covers core principles and nano-approaches in bioanalytics for medical diagnostics - Details a range of in vitro, in vivo and ex vivo models for nanobioanalytics, including spectroscopic analysis, erythrocyte models, microfluidics, and more - Appeals to an interdisciplinary readership, spanning the fields of materials science, biomedical engineering and biochemical engineering

Book excerpt: This atlas shows the relationship between water pollution and cancer in the Huai River Basin in China over the last 30 years. Drawing on a five-year study conducted by the China Centre for Disease Control (CDC), Professor Gonghuan Yang & Dafang Zhuang present a spatial and longitudinal analysis of regular pollution monitoring and disease surveillance data. A review of variation in trends in the causes of death in the Huai River Basin over the past 30 years shows that precisely those areas which were the most seriously polluted for the longest time were the areas with the highest increase in digestive cancer deaths – several times that of the national average increase for the respective cancers. Spatial analysis shows a high level of correspondence between the seriously polluted areas and areas with high mortality from cancer, the most important finding in the atlas. Dr. Gonghuan Yang is a Professor at the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. She serves as Director of the Center of NCD & BRFS of the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, Chinese Academy of Medical Science, Beijing, China. She is an expert on Public Health and an epidemiologist focusing on chronic non-communicable diseases. Dr. Dafang Zhuang is a Professor at the Institute of Geographical Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China. He is an expert of geographical information system and its application in correlating public health with environmental changes.

Book excerpt: Computational Intelligence (CI) and Bioprocess are well-established research areas which have much to offer each other. Under the perspective of the CI area, Biop- cess can be considered a vast application area with a growing number of complex and challenging tasks to be dealt with, whose solutions can contribute to boosting the development of new intelligent techniques as well as to help the refinement and s- cialization of many of the already existing techniques. Under the perspective of the Bioprocess area, CI can be considered a useful repertoire of theories, methods and techniques that can contribute and offer interesting alternative approaches for solving many of its problems, particularly those hard to solve using conventional techniques. Although throughout the past years CI and Bioprocess areas have accumulated substantial specific knowledge and progress has been quick and with a high degree of success, we believe there is still a long way to go in order to use the potentialities of the available CI techniques and knowledge at their full extent, as tools for supporting problem solving in bioprocesses. One of the reasons is the fact that both areas have progressed steadily and have been continuously accumulating and refining specific knowledge; another reason is the high level of technical expertise demanded by each of them. The acquisition of technical skills, experience and good insights in either of the two areas is very demanding and a hard task to be accomplished by any professional.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thorough analysis of public policy and the Clean Water Act'seffect on water quality in the U.S. Using water quality data and historical records from the past 60years, this book presents the measured impact of the 1972 CleanWater Act on domestic waterways-ecologically, politically, andeconomically. Municipal Wastewater Treatment supports thehypothesis that the Act's regulation of wastewater treatmentprocesses at publicly owned treatment works (POTW) and industrialfacilities has achieved significant success. The authors' case ispresented in: * Background information on the history of water pollution controland water quality management * Chapters addressing long-term trends in biochemical oxygen demandloadings from municipal wastewater plants and the "worst-case"dissolved oxygen levels in waterways downstream of point sourcesbefore and after the Clean Water Act * Nine case study assessments of long-term trends of pollutantloading water quality and environmental resources associated withPOTW discharges Using long-term trends in dissolved oxygen as the key indicator ofwater quality improvements, this book provides a detailedretrospective analysis of the effectiveness of the water pollutioncontrol policies and regulations of the 1972 Clean Water Act. Thesuccesses of the Act that have been achieved over the past 30 yearsare placed in the historical context of the "Great SanitaryAwakening" of the 19th century and changes in public policies forwater supply and water pollution control that have evolved duringthe 20th century to protect public health and the intrinsic valueof aquatic resources. Case study sites include the ConnecticutRiver, Hudson-Raritan Estuary, Delaware Estuary, Potomac Estuary,Upper Chattahoochee River, Ohio River, Upper Mississippi River, andWillamette River. Complete with end-of-chapter summaries and conclusions, MunicipalWastewater Treatment: Evaluating Improvements in National WaterQuality is an essential book for engineers, scientists, regulators, and consultants involved in water quality management and wastewatertreatment, as well as students of environmental engineering, environmental science, and public policy.
