Book excerpt: It is assumed in the integrity analysis of reactor pressure vessel (RPV) that the irradiation-induced shift of fracture toughness in the ductile-brittle transition region is the same as the Charpy transition temperature shift. To confirm this assumption, both shifts are compared using irradiated and post-irradiation annealed RPV steels made by Japanese manufacturers. Five ASTM A533B class 1 plates having high- and low-level impurities, which correspond to first generation and modern Japanese reactors are used in this study. Neutron irradiation of precracked Charpy-v (PCCv) specimens as well as standard Charpy-v specimens was carried out at the Japan Materials Testing Reactor (JMTR). The values of fast neutron fluence for this study are 2 to 13x1019 (n/cm2, E>1MeV) considering typical fluence values at the EOL and extended operation of Japanese PWRs. The irradiation temperature was controlled within the range of 290±10°C. Thermal annealing treatments at 350°C and 450°C for 100 hours were performed for irradiated PCCv and Charpy-v specimens. The master curve approach according to ASTM Test Method for Determination of Reference Temperature, T0, for Ferritic Steels in the Transition Range (E1921) was applied using PCCv specimens. The irradiation-induced shifts of the reference temperature, ?T0, obtained in this study were spread in the range of 10 to 200°C. The annealing recoveries of the reference temperature were compared with those of the Charpy transition temperature. Although large scatter was seen in the relation between ?T0 values and Charpy 41J shifts, both shifts were almost the same in the average.

Book excerpt: The dynamic fracture toughness of an ASTM A533, Grade B steel plate was determined at several temperatures in the ductile-brittle transition region. Crack-tip loading rates ranged from approximately 103 to 105 MPa?m/s. The fracture toughness was shown to decrease with increased loading rate. The dynamic fracture toughness was compared with results from previous investigations and it was shown that the decrease in toughness due to increased loading rate at the highest test temperature was not as severe as reported in previous investigations. It was also shown that the reference temperature, T0, was a better index of the fracture toughness vs. temperature relationship than the nil-ductility temperature, RTNDT for this material.

Book excerpt: Fracture properties of Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV) steels show large variations with changes in temperature and irradiation levels. Brittle behavior is observed at lower temperatures and/or higher irradiation levels whereas ductile mode of failure is predominant at higher temperatures and/or lower irradiation levels. In addition to such temperature and radiation dependent fracture behavior, significant scatter in fracture toughness has also been observed. As a consequence of such variability in fracture behavior, accurate estimates of fracture properties of RPV steels are of utmost importance for safe and reliable operation of reactor pressure vessels. A cohesive zone based approach is being pursued in the present study where an attempt is made to obtain a unified law capturing both stable crack growth (ductile fracture) and unstable failure (cleavage fracture). The parameters of the constitutive model are dependent on both temperature and failure probability. The effect of irradiation has not been considered in the present study. The use of such a cohesive zone based approach would allow the modeling of explicit crack growth at both stable and unstable regimes of fracture. Also it would provide the possibility to incorporate more physical lower length scale models to predict DBT. Such a multi-scale approach would significantly improve the predictive capabilities of the model, which is still largely empirical.

Book excerpt: Transition temperature shift effects arising from neutron radiation embrittlement in ferritic nuclear pressure vessel materials are currently being evaluated using changes in the Charpy V-notch energy curve; typically, the temperature shift at the 41-J (30 ft-lb) energy level is used. Estimates of the 41 J (30 ft-lb) transition temperature are also projected based upon Nuclear Regulatory Commission Regulatory Guide 1.99, Revision 2. The estimated or measured Charpy shift is then applied to a lower-bound reference toughness KIR curve by moving the curve by the Charpy shift amount. Similarly, the flaw evaluation procedures in nonmandatory Appendix A of Section XI of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code utilize the shifts in the equivalent of the KIR curve (termed the KIa curve for crack arrest) and a lower-bound static crack initiation toughness KIc curve. This study reviewed and tested this Code's approach, as well as the statistically based reference toughness method developed by W. Oldfield for estimating global tolerance bounds. Comparisons of actual, but limited, fracture toughness data and the predicted bounding curves indicate that the shifted KIR/KIc curves are generally very conservative. The Oldfield reference toughness approach for 95%-95% tolerance bounds is not as conservative, but may provide a better method. In terms of mean toughness shift behavior, the shifts predicted by Charpy V-notch results are not always a true indicator of the mean fracture toughness shift; however, the other margins included in Regulatory Guide 1.99, Revision 2 and those in the original unirradiated KIR/KIc curves appear to compensate for any nonconservatism in using the Charpy V-notch shift approach.

This book was released on 1980 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new model for the temperature dependence of the fracture toughness has been sought. It is based on the yielding processes at the crack tip, which are thought to be competitive with fracture. Using this method a good correlation between measured and calculated values of fracture toughness has been found for a Cr-Mo-V pressure vessel steel as well as for A533B. It has been thought that the application of this method can reduce the number of surveillance specimens in nuclear reactors.

Book excerpt: Fracture toughness (KJ (cleavage) ) measurements made within the ductile-to-brittle transition region for ferritic pressure vessel steels are not always described by the shape of the Master Curve currently given in ASTM Standard E 1921. The objective of this paper is to show how the shape of the transition toughness curve may be related to the shape of the material's resistance to crack extension curve (KJR) once the crack tip starts to blunt and ductile crack extension precedes cleavage failure. Using an empirical relationship between the mean ductile crack extension (?a) prior to the onset of cleavage failure and temperature (?a=?exp(?T)), then the relationship between KJ and T may simply be given by KJ=KA+?[?exp(?T)]?, where KA, ?, and ? are simply the coefficients to an offset power law to KJ versus ?a data given by KJR=KA+?(?a)?. For specimens of different sizes, a reference temperature TK may be defined for a given reference level of ?a or equivalent KJ. Unique curves may be defined for materials with differing crack extension resistance curves through plots of KJ versus (T-T?a(ref)) or (T-TK(ref)). The generalized form of the transition curve may be given by KJ=KA+??a(ref)exp[?(T-T?a(ref))]?, or KJ=KA+(K(ref)-KA)exp[?(T-TK(ref))]?. Experimentally, ? has been estimated as approximately 0.08 for nuclear pressure vessel materials such as A533B/A508. Using a specific situation wherein the value of KA=30 MPa ?m, K(ref)=100 MPa ?m, and ?=0.25 then, for a B=25-mm specimen, within experimental scatter this provides an almost exact match to the Master Curve given by KJ=30+70exp[0.019(T-TK100)]. The predictions of transition curve shape using the material's resistance to crack extension curve are believed to be complementary to the Master Curve method, and may describe the shape of the transition curve when there is ductile crack extension prior to cleavage failure. Further work is recommended to investigate the relationship between the predicted ductile-to-brittle transition curve and the Master Curve for probabilities of cleavage failure post-initiation.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A508 Grade 4N is a high nickel (3.4 %) pressure vessel steel with a relatively high yield strength (585 MPa minimum for Class 1) and a relatively low transition temperature (47 J transition temperature of -29°C or below). Published fracture toughness data on this steel are nonexistent, and so they have not been included in prior assessments of the applicability of the Master Curve approach to pressure vessel steels. The purpose of this study is to compare the temperature dependence and data scatter for this steel with the behavior predicted by the Master Curve. The available database consists of approximately 800 fracture toughness tests on 51 material heats, some of which were given a temper embrittling heat treatment. As an additional basis of comparison, test data on A508 Grades 2 and 3, 1 % nickel weld metal, and several high nickel (1.3-3.8 %) steels (NiCrMo and NiCrMoV) were included in the assessment. Maximum likelihood techniques were used to fit the toughness data, and Monte Carlo methods were used to assess the observed distribution of Weibull slopes (related to the extent of variability). The results of this assessment show that the Master Curve provides a good description of the shape (temperature dependence) of the toughness curve for moderate and high transition temperatures. However, for heats with low transition temperatures below the range observed in other pressure vessel steels, the shape of the toughness curve deviates from the Master Curve. The lower the transition temperature, the larger the deviation from the Master Curve. Based on the test data, a model describing the behavior of A508 Grade 4N has been developed. This model also accurately describes the toughness behavior of the other pressure vessel steels included in this study. With respect to variability, the Weibull slope of A508 Grade 4N is consistent with the value of four prescribed by the Master Curve. However, the Weibull slope for the other pressure vessel steels included in this assessment is close to 3.4. This lower value of the Weibull slope, which indicates larger variability, is likely the result of material inhomogeneity.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive fracture toughness testing program focused principally at providing statistical assurance of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) KIR fracture toughness design curve is presently underway. While the overall program represents testing of 50 heats of typical production materials, including A533-B, Class 1 plate; A508, Class 2 forging; A540-B-23 and B-24, Class 3 bolting material; submerged arc, manual metal arc, and shielded metal arc weldments; and associated heat-affected zone material, the data presented herein represent the initial results of an interlaboratory round robin program and the first seven heats of A533-B Class 1 plate tested in the program. Mechanical tests performed include tension, drop weight-nil ductility transition (NDT) temperature, Charpy V-notch, instrumented precracked Charpy, static and dynamic compact fracture, and dynamic three-point bend. Of these tests, instrumented precracked Charpy, dynamic three-point bend, and dynamic compact fracture are nonstandard procedures. Methodology for performance of these nonstandard tests is outlined. The fracture mechanics tests were performed on specimens up to 1-in. thick (4-in.-thick specimens will be tested later). Loading rates ranging from quasistatic to stress intensity rates (?K) of 5 x 105 ksi ?in./s were applied.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper outlines the problems encountered in attempting to define a self-consistent upper shelf toughness data base for use in a generic study of the integrity of a light water reactor (LWR) pressure vessel. Multiple-specimen resistance curve JR data were examined to provide "best estimates" of static initiation fracture toughness Ki at temperatures corresponding to fully ductile upper shelf behavior. In some cases, this involved reassessment of published data. To provide information that should be typical of current commercial steel making practice, Ki temperature relationships were developed from a statistical analysis of those data for A533B-1 and A508-3 steels containing less than 0.010 weight % sufur.
