Book excerpt: Lost love haunts many as they age, but ; in Staten Island Memoirs, Paris. Polanski creates a ficticious love affair with a beautiful face from the past; he cannot forget; Paris has led a full life that lacks only one thing - the love of a beautiful woman he met 43 years ago. The woman in question is the real life equivalent to Helen, the central character in the novel, modeled after the Greek Goddess Helen of Troy. The story opens with Paris Polanski in his home in Grant City, Staten Island. Not being able to find his long lost love, Paris creates a work of fiction in which he recreates his life by falling in love with, marrying and becoming part of Helen’s life, thus showing just how far one man's obsession will go to remove the sorrow of lost love. The story then goes back in time and continues Paris Polanski as a young man, secretly in love with a nameless, beautiful young woman. Shy and lacking self esteem, he is unable to express his feelings for her, and loses her to another man. After serving in the US Navy, Paris attends a New York City college and during one of his classes, he dreams of his ideal woman in the image and likeness of Helen of Troy. A year later, Paris sees the same young woman, Helen Jones, a student at Wilson College. She is smart, beautiful, and popular, and comes from a wealthy family. Paris on the other hand comes from a middle class family, dresses poorly, and is not blessed with the social graces; Engaged to a handsome young Ivy League attorney, Helen learns he has been cheating, and ends the relationship.

Book excerpt: Sometimes people say and do things that just make you sit back and wonder. Well, this book is definitely three chapters of pure wonderment! It all begins innocently enough within the womb then guides you on a path of fifth grade laughter and hi-jinx. Each tale contains real life situations that will surely bring a smile to your face. In fact, they're almost therapeutic as they confirm the fact that yes, there is actually someone out there in the world more moronic than yourself! Now isn't that a comforting thought! Stories from childhood through high school, to a three-year stint with the United States navy, right up to present day, only proves one thing. That years and experience of life mean absolutely nothing if you can't look back on them and have yourself a good hearty laugh! Hopefully some of the stories within this book will help to stir up a few entertaining memories from your own past. Remember.. memories are the fuel powering our sanity! Welcome to Tommy's world!

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In these hilarious essays, the Saturday Night Live head writer and Weekend Update co-anchor learns how to take a beating. “I always wanted to punch his face before I read this book. Now I just want to kick him in the balls.”—Larry David NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY Cosmopolitan • Vulture • Parade If there’s one trait that makes someone well suited to comedy, it’s being able to take a punch—metaphorically and, occasionally, physically. From growing up in a family of firefighters on Staten Island to commuting three hours a day to high school and “seeing the sights” (like watching a Russian woman throw a stroller off the back of a ferry), to attending Harvard while Facebook was created, Jost shares how he has navigated the world like a slightly smarter Forrest Gump. You’ll also discover things about Jost that will surprise and confuse you, like how Jimmy Buffett saved his life, how Czech teenagers attacked him with potato salad, how an insect laid eggs inside his legs, and how he competed in a twenty-five-man match at WrestleMania (and almost won). You'll go behind the scenes at SNL and Weekend Update (where he's written some of the most memorable sketches and jokes of the past fifteen years). And you’ll experience the life of a touring stand-up comedian—from performing in rural college cafeterias at noon to opening for Dave Chappelle at Radio City Music Hall. For every accomplishment (hosting the Emmys), there is a setback (hosting the Emmys). And for every absurd moment (watching paramedics give CPR to a raccoon), there is an honest, emotional one (recounting his mother’s experience on the scene of the Twin Towers’ collapse on 9/11). Told with a healthy dose of self-deprecation, A Very Punchable Face reveals the brilliant mind behind some of the dumbest sketches on television, and lays bare the heart and humor of a hardworking guy—with a face you can’t help but want to punch.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When my sister and brother and I were growing up on Staten Island, Dad told us very little about his Vermont boyhood, and nothing at all about his father. We respected his silence. We figured he had good reason for it. But long after Dad's death, my sister and I started to look more closely at our family history. Soon we were connected to a world of New England striving and struggle that we came to see as part of our own Vermont heritage. So this is the story of Dad and his mother and brother, and his unreliable father, and his father's five sisters, whom we'd known nothing about before we began our research. It pays tribute to an everyday heroine, Dad's mother, who took her sons to Staten Island to begin a new life when her marriage failed. It also traces earlier Wrights (and forebears with other surnames, like Little, Bailey, Hadley, Hathaway, Shattuck, Blanchard, and Burt) in towns all over Vermont (and New Hampshire and Massachusetts), some of them with their own compelling stories -- farmers, soldiers, railroad men, miners, housewives, and keepers of inns and hotels. These are my Wrights of Vermont.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Days Afield on Staten Island Thus with some of the members of that collecting and tramping fraternity, of which the Island possesses a goodly number, I went afield, but more often I rambled alone. Nature seems to speak more directly to a lone rambler, and to a number of persons in company she rarely says a word. Two, at most, can tread evenly the same path. Can be touched by the same sense, and echo to each other with pleasant minor changes, the in uences of the way. In character these pages are miscellaneous as were the excursions they commemorate, and they might have been much extended, but perhaps a small potion of an untried compound will be preferred by the reader. It is the fashion to condemn, and I do not expect the majority to be at variance with that mood, but perhaps to some loiterer by the hedge-rows, I may speak sincerely, and he will prize the result of my humble effort to write something of nature and old Staten Island. Book excerpt: If you have any connection to Staten Island, be it past or present, if you have family or friends that have moved away and miss our Old Staten Island, this book is for you. With over 350 questions and answers about our islands past, it will be great sharing it with all who still live on Staten Island and all the expatriates. In the nine years since I started my 'Old Staten Island' website (www.statenislandhistory.com), I have been asked many questions about our islands past. With all the research I have done for my first four books and the start of my new facebook page about Staten Island memories came a plethora of answers to those questions. A few visitors to my facebook page brought up the idea of a trivia book on Staten Island which led to this book. I have to thank all the visitors to the facebook page and to my website for the many questions and suggestions which helped this publication along to fruition. I need to express my gratitude to Dan Blaine. He kindly consented to the use of his many questions from a blog he started in 1995. His site was called SI NosTrivia Forum, he would come up with a series of questions about people, places and events from Staten Island's past and people would try to answer them. Not only did I have a blast putting this book together, but the knowledge I gained about our island was priceless. Hopefully the answers to the questions are all accurate. I tried my best to research the answers and many times I reached out to get help with the answers. Here's hoping you enjoy this book as much as I have in putting it together.

With the approach to the millennium, the topic of change is on everyone's mind--how our communities and lifestyles have changed over the past century, and how we can endeavor to preserve the past while facing the future in which the world seems to change ever faster. The American Century series documents and celebrates our most recent history--featuring images of faces and places which were taken within living memory and yet that already seem to belong to a long-past era.

Book excerpt: Taken in the "forgotten borough" of Staten Island between 1983 and 1984, the photographs in Christine Osinski's (born 1948) Summer Days Staten Islandcreate a portrait of working-class culture in an often overlooked section of New York City. Captured on Osinski's large format 4x5 camera as she wandered the island, her candid portraits of strangers, vernacular architecture and quotidian scenes reveal an invisible landscape within reach of the thriving metropolis of Manhattan. The neighborhoods that Osinski captured are devoid of the skyscrapers, swarms of pedestrians and choking masses of traffic that are a short ferry ride away. Instead, she captures kids riding bikes on open, empty streets, suburban homes with neatly tended yards and the small-town feel of New York's least populous borough. Accompanying the series of images is an essay by Paul Moakley, Timemagazine's Deputy Director of Photography and Visual Enterprise.
