Book Synopsis Culture, Ecology and Economy of Fire Management in North Australian Savannas by : Jeremy Russell-Smith
Download or read book Culture, Ecology and Economy of Fire Management in North Australian Savannas written by Jeremy Russell-Smith and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2009-10-26 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This engaging volume explores the management of fire in one of the world’s most flammable landscapes: Australia’s tropical savannas, where on average 18% of the landscape is burned annually. Impacts have been particularly severe in the Arnhem Land Plateau, a centre of plant and animal diversity on Indigenous land. Culture, Ecology and Economy of Fire Management in North Australian Savannas documents a remarkable collaboration between Arnhem Land’s traditional landowners and the scientific community to arrest a potentially catastrophic fire-driven decline in the natural and cultural assets of the region – not by excluding fire, but by using it better through restoration of Indigenous control over burning. This multi-disciplinary treatment encompasses the history of fire use in the savannas, the post-settlement changes that altered fire patterns, the personal histories of a small number of people who lived most of their lives on the plateau and, critically, their deep knowledge of fire and how to apply it to care for country. Uniquely, it shows how such knowledge and commitment can be deployed in conjunction with rigorous formal scientific analysis, advanced technology, new cross-cultural institutions and the emerging carbon economy to build partnerships for controlling fire at scales that were, until this demonstration, thought beyond effective intervention.
Book Synopsis The Archaeology of Rock Art in Western Arnhem Land, Australia by : Bruno David
Download or read book The Archaeology of Rock Art in Western Arnhem Land, Australia written by Bruno David and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western Arnhem Land, in the Top End of Australia’s Northern Territory, has a rich archaeological landscape, ethnographic record and body of rock art that displays an astonishing array of imagery on shelter walls and ceilings. While the archaeology goes back to the earliest period of Aboriginal occupation of the continent, the rock art represents some of the richest, most diverse and visually most impressive regional assemblages anywhere in the world. To better understand this multi-dimensional cultural record, The Archaeology of Rock Art in Western Arnhem Land, Australia focuses on the nature and antiquity of the region’s rock art as revealed by archaeological surveys and excavations, and the application of novel analytical methods. This volume also presents new findings by which to rethink how Aboriginal peoples have socially engaged in and with places across western Arnhem Land, from the north to the south, from the plains to the spectacular rocky landscapes of the plateau. The dynamic nature of Arnhem Land rock art is explored and articulated in innovative ways that shed new light on the region’s deep time Aboriginal history.

Download or read book Aboriginals and the Mining Industry written by David Cousins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-08-09 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1973, Peter Rogers concluded that 'Australia has not done itself justice in the handling of modern industry versus Aborigines conflict. the lack of preparation. is a disgrace to government, private organisations and unions alike'. What has happened since then? Aboriginals and the mining industry reviews three main questions - to what extent have Aboriginals shared in the fruits of the mining boom? Have new land rights helped Aboriginals protect their interests as affected by mining? And what has been the contribution of mining to the economic development of remote Aboriginal communities? These are vital questions for all concerned with the impact of mining expansion on Aboriginal communities. This book reviews the participation of Aborigines in the mining company employment. It examines the contribution of the recent land rights legislation to protecting Aboriginal interests. And it asks how far the growth of mining in remote parts of Australia has aided the economic development of Aboriginal groups living there. Detailed case studies of mining projects included.
