They are never very long, probably due to the fact that small space is reserved for them in the magazines. A great majority rhyme in couplets or alternately and the stanzas of the separate poems have a definite scheme. Book excerpt: Excerpt from State Normal Magazine, Vol. 14: January, 1910 I was delighted to hear when I came to the college that most of your students have your homes in the country. I was delighted to find that there is probably no state in the Union where there is a larger percentage of the people who live in the country and not in the cities, than in North Caro lina. That is a very good thing. I am always depressed when I go into those immense cities which are growing up in Europe and America, like New York and Philadelphia, where a large part of the population has to live many miles from the country. But think how different life is to people living in the midst of brick and mortar and busy, dusty streets and the constant sounds of traffic passing to and fro, from those of us brought up in the country where we can smell the new mown hay and see the green pastures and the waving of the trees and the constant change of nature from winter to spring and from spring to summer and autumn. These were the things which were the earliest possessions of our race; these are the things which are the first and the perpetual themes of poetry; these are the things among which it is well to grow up and which we remember with pleasure even in the latter part of our lives. It is not the case in cities. I hope that the large majority of you will go back to pastoral life in the country. It is a very goo-d thing for the health of the people in every way - moral and physical health - to live in the country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from State Normal Magazine, Vol. 14: May, 1910 At present the government is entirely and absolutely in the hands of the Faculty. The rules of the institution are a burden which the student finds awaiting her upon register ing. Before college work begins, at a mass meeting of the Faculty and students, the college regulations and dormitory rules are discussed. It is here for the first time that the student learns the things for which she has contracted to do. In some cases, the seriousness of this mass meeting fails to make the proper impression. So that not infrequently, at first through their own forgetfulness and carelessness, the new girls are called to account. Book excerpt: Excerpt from State Normal Magazine, Vol. 14: November, 1909 Each Fall we return to our college with gladness, for, though we have lost some old comrades, we have gained as many new ones, in whom lies hidden as much power as we have lost. What a wealth of hidden treasure we shall claim of you new girls who come to us this Fall! It is there and we love you for it and ask you to use it for the uplifting of our college. You give, but what do you receive in return? We could never pay the debt that we owe for our opportunities here. The Normal has the highest standard of any woman's college in the State, and offers its advantages as a gift to every young woman who desires an education. It is all a spirit of giving here, and so, fellow-students of the college we love, we give you our heartiest welcome, wishing all good fortune to the lucky-numbered Class of 1913. Book excerpt: Excerpt from State Normal Magazine, Vol. 10: November, 1905 From the records of the Orange Presbytery we get a clearer insight into his relation to the community in which he lived than we may from reminiscences alone, hence the following quotations: Sept, 1827. John Chavis writes a letter to Presbytery about the Colonization Society, and asks for aid in his pecuniary difficulties. In 1831 the negroes of southeastern Virginia and northeast ern North Carolina rose in insurrection under the leadership of a negro, Nat Turner. In consequence of this, very severe laws were passed by the Legislature of North Carolina concern ing the control of slaves. It was forbidden to teach a negro to read, and colored men were forbidden to preach. This deprived Chavis of his livelihood, and we see concerning him in the minutes of his Presbytery: April, 1832. Chavis writes again to Presbytery about his troubles in view of an act of the late Legislature of North Carolina forbidding colored men to preach. Book excerpt: Excerpt from State Normal Magazine, Vol. 9: October, 1904 June, 1905 The cultured spanlsh-american homes are built of adobe and are of one story, but pen and ink cannot describe their charm. Usually they are constructed on three sides of a court in which are fountains, grass, owers and trees. Now and then is seen the gleam of a marble figure. The fourth side of the court is a wall in which are gates or doors. Formerly these walls were the height of the houses, but the old ones have crumbled and the new ones are low since the homes no longer need defence. The living rooms Open on this court and between the pillars of the cool inner portale the hammock sways and inviting couches or easy chairs tell of the dreamy leisure of these daughters of Castilian kings.
