What is the role of the State in promoting human flourishing in light of unprecedented challenges to the very fabric of society? The State in Catholic Thought(recommended by Fr. James V. Schall, S.J., in Another Sort of Learning) is a masterful survey of the development of the Church's teaching on the relationships between the nation-state and individuals, families, and local and international communities. Rommen examines the state as a "moral organism" and its purpose in light of the natural law. In thistour de forceof the contributions of Augustine, Aquinas, Suarez, Bellarmine, and Popes throughout the ages, Rommen foreshadows the encyclicals of St. John Paul II and Benedict XVI and brings the light of Catholic thought to bear on today's most pressing issues. Professor Bruce Frohnen's Introduction sets Rommen and his work in political and intellectual context, brilliantly encapsulating Rommen's analysis and the importance of hismagnum opusin assisting readers to find the means of renewing a more just political and social order."

Book Synopsis Roman Catholic Political Philosophy by : James V. Schall
Download or read book Roman Catholic Political Philosophy written by James V. Schall and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2006-08 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Roman Catholic Political Philosophy author James V. Schall tries to demonstrate that Roman Catholicism and political philosophy---revelation and reason--are not contradictory. It is his contention that political philosophy, the primary focus of the book, asks certain questions about human purpose and destiny that it cannot, by itself, answer. Revelation is the natural complement to these important questions about God, human being, and the world. Schall manages to avoid polemicism or triumphalism as he shows that revelation and political thought contribute to a fuller understanding of each other.
Book Synopsis Leo Strauss and His Catholic Readers by : Geoffrey M. Vaughan
Download or read book Leo Strauss and His Catholic Readers written by Geoffrey M. Vaughan and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2018-05-11 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the work and influence of Leo Strauss in a variety of ways that will be of interest to readers of political philosophy. It will be of particular interest to Catholics and scholars of other religious traditions. Strauss had a great deal of interaction with his contemporary Catholic scholars, and many of his students or their students teach or have taught at Catholic colleges and universities in America. Leo Strauss and His Catholic Readers brings together work by scholars from two continents, some of whom knew Strauss, one of whom was his student at the University of Chicago. The first section of essays considers Catholic responses to Strauss’s project of recovering Classical natural right as against modern individual rights. Some of the authors suggest that his approach can be a fruitful corrective to an uncritical reception of modern ideas. Nevertheless, most point out that the Catholic cannot accept all of Strauss’s project. The second section deals with areas of overlap between Strauss and Catholics. Some of the chapters explore encounters with his contemporary scholars while others turn to more current concerns. The final section approaches the theological-political question itself, a question central to both Strauss’s work and that of the Catholic intellectual tradition. This section of the book considers the relationship of Strauss’s work to Christianity and Christian commitments at a broader level. Because Christianity does not have an explicit political doctrine, Christians have found themselves as rulers, subjects, and citizens in a variety of political regimes. Leo Strauss’s return to Platonic political philosophy can provide a useful lens through which his Catholic readers can assess what it means for there to be a best regime.
Book Synopsis American Interpretations of Natural Law by : Benjamin Fletcher Wright
Download or read book American Interpretations of Natural Law written by Benjamin Fletcher Wright and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book illustrates the deep roots of natural law doctrines in America's political culture. Originally published in 1931, the volume shows that American interpretations of natural law go to the philosophical heart of the American regime. The Declaration of Independence is the preeminent example of natural law in American political thought?it is the self-evident truth of American society.Benjamin Wright proposes that the decline of natural law as a guiding factor in American political behaviour is inevitable as America's democracy matures and broadens. What Wright also chronicled, inadvertently, was how the progressive critique of natural law has opened a rift between and among some of the ruling elites and large numbers of Americans who continue to accept it. Progressive elites who reject natural law do not share the same political culture as many of their fellow citizens.Wright's work is important because, as Leo Strauss and others have observed, the decline of natural law is a development that has not had a happy ending in other societies in the twentieth century. There is no reason to believe it will be different in the United States.
Book Synopsis What is Political Philosophy? And Other Studies by : Leo Strauss
Download or read book What is Political Philosophy? And Other Studies written by Leo Strauss and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1988-10-15 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "All political action has . . . in itself a directedness towards knowledge of the good: of the good life, or of the good society. For the good society is the complete political good. If this directedness becomes explicit, if men make it their explicit goal to acquire knowledge of the good life and of the good society, political philosophy emerges. . . . The theme of political philosophy is mankind's great objectives, freedom and government or empire—objectives which are capable of lifting all men beyond their poor selves. Political philosophy is that branch of philosophy which is closest to political life, to non-philosophic life, to human life."—From "What Is Political Philosophy?" What Is Political Philosophy?—a collection of ten essays and lectures and sixteen book reviews written between 1943 and 1957—contains some of Leo Strauss's most famous writings and some of his most explicit statements of the themes that made him famous. The title essay records Strauss's sole extended articulation of the meaning of political philosophy itself. Other essays discuss the relation of political philosophy to history, give an account of the political philosophy of the non-Christian Middle Ages and of classic European modernity, and present his theory of esoteric writing.

Book Synopsis European Democratic Culture by : Gerard Duprat
Download or read book European Democratic Culture written by Gerard Duprat and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-08-18 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These essays go beyond conventional studies of the institutions and parties of Europe to address Europe's democractic future more widely. While the book does offer an analysis of the democratic institutions of European countries, identifying common features and differences, as the editors put it, "institutions cannot function alone, like machines to produce concensus". So the book focuses on the fundamentals of European democratic culture. The authors argue that European social life and scientific learning have been indispensable components in the growth of the shared values that democracy pursues. They also analyse the dynamic tension brought to the life of democractic institutions by law, the desire for freedom, and critical public debate. With Europe engaged in perpetual self-examination, and rapid change, this book provides insights into its democractic past and prognosticates for its democratic future.

Download or read book American Comparative Law written by David S. Clark and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-09-02 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Historical Comparative Law and Comparative Legal History Legal history and comparative law overlap in important respects. This is more apparent with the use of some methods for comparison, such as legal transplant, natural law, or nation building. M.N.S. Sellers nicely portrayed the relationship. The past is a foreign country, its people strangers and its laws obscure.... No one can really understand her or his own legal system without leaving it first, and looking back from the outside. The comparative study of law makes one's own legal system more comprehensible, by revealing its idiosyncrasies. Legal history is comparative law without travel. Legal historians, perhaps especially in the United States, have been skeptical about the possibility of a fruitful comparative legal history, preferring in general to investigate the distinctiveness of their national experience. Comparatists, however, content with revealing or promoting similarities or differences between legal systems, by their nature strive toward comparison. Some American historians, especially since World War II, see the value in this"--
Book Synopsis Natural Law and Religious Freedom by : J. Daryl Charles
Download or read book Natural Law and Religious Freedom written by J. Daryl Charles and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-20 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every successive generation finds fresh reasons for the study of natural law. Current interest in the natural law may well be due to a pervasive moral pessimism in the Western cultural context and wider contemporary geopolitical challenges. Those geopolitical challenges result from two significant and worrisome global developments – unprecedented violent persecution of religious minorities on several continents and a growing climate of secular hostility toward religious faith in Western societies. Natural Law and Religious Freedom aims to address what is relatively absent from the literature by demonstrating the importance of natural law ethics in both establishing and preserving basic human rights, of which religious freedom has pride of place. Probing contemporary challenges to natural law thinking that are both internal and external to religious faith, and examining the character and constitution of natural law ethics, Natural Law and Religious Freedom will be of interest to theologians, ethicists and philosophers as well as policy analysts, politicians and activists who are concerned to anchor religious freedom and human rights policy considerations in an enduring way.
Book Synopsis Encyclopedia of Catholic Social Thought, Social Science, and Social Policy by : Michael L. Coulter
Download or read book Encyclopedia of Catholic Social Thought, Social Science, and Social Policy written by Michael L. Coulter and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2012-04-05 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two original volumes of the Encyclopedia of Catholic Social Thought, Social Science, and Social Policy were published in 2007. Those two volumes included 848 entries from nearly 300 contributors and included a wide range of entries in three general categories: entries exploring Catholic social thought at a theoretical level, entries reflecting the learning of various social science and humanistic disciplines as this learning relates to Catholic social thought, and entries examining specific social policy questions. This third, supplemental volume continues the approach of the original two. First, the volume includes entries that explore Catholic social thought at its broadest, most theoretical level; for example, an entry on Pope Benedict’s important social encyclical Caritas in Veritate. Second, the volume includes entries that discuss recent social science research that bears on issues important to Catholic social thought; for example, an entry on the social costs of pornography draws on recent research on the topic. Third, the volume includes entries discussing specific issues of social policy that have become increasingly important in recent years; for example, an entry on embryo adoption and/or rescue. This third volume contains 202 entirely new entries from over 100 contributors. The contributors include distinguished scholars such as Father Robert John Araujo, S.J. (Loyola University of Chicago), Father Kevin L. Flannery, S.J. (Gregorian University), Robert P. George (Princeton University), William E. May (John Paul Institute and the Culture of Life Foundation), D. Q. McInerny (Our Lady of Guadalupe Seminary), and Michael Novak (Ave Maria University). The work will appeal to anyone who is looking for a clear and accurate introduction to Catholic social thought.

Book Synopsis The Republican Legacy in International Thought by : Nicholas Greenwood Onuf
Download or read book The Republican Legacy in International Thought written by Nicholas Greenwood Onuf and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-01-08 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Republicanism has enjoyed a revival of scholarly interest in several fields. In this book Nicholas Onuf provides the first major treatment of the republican way of thinking about law, politics, and society in the context of international thought. The author tells two stories about republicanism, starting with Aristotle and culminating in the eighteenth century, when international thought became a distinctive enterprise. These two stories surround the thought of Vattel and Kant, and by telling them side by side the author identifies a substantial but little-acknowledged legacy of republicanism in contemporary discussions of sovereignty, intervention, international society, peace, levels of analysis, and the global economy. In identifying this legacy in contemporary thought, Nicholas Onuf develops his constructivist approach to international theory.
