Book excerpt: Excerpt from State Forests for Public Use Millions OF acres Of land unsuited for agricultural use, cut over and cleared of forest growth during the period of land settlement, are now awaiting return to public ownership. Some steps have been taken by Federal agencies to purchase certain areas of such lands under a varied program of acquisition, which leaves the residue to be rehabilitated by the State in which it is located. By and large, ownership and manage ment of the smaller blocks of from to acres must be assumed by the States themselves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The National Forests of California After a quarter century of effort by the conservationists, the problem Of providing for adequate protection and wise use Of forests and forest land in the United States is still one of the most pressing problems of the Nation. This problem can not be solved in its entirety by foresters and landowners. Public Opinion must be aroused. The destructive use Of the forests which created the pres ent Situation has been tolerated partly because Of lack Of general understanding Of the results Of unwise lumbering methods and Of letting fire burn the woods. There is great need to-day for the public to become acquainted with the forests in a more intimate way. To know something of their extent and productivity, their relationship to the economic and social life Of the Nation, and their consequent claim to direct interest on the part Of every citizen in their wise use and perpetuation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forests and Forestry in the American States: A Reference Anthology Forestry as a matter of public policy is scarcely over 80 years old in America. As a profession, it is barely over 65. As a definitive science it is about 50. Forestry came to the United States in several distinct stages. Born as an idea in the minds of a few men and women, it sprang into adolescence as a political movement in the last decades of the nineteenth century. It matured as it grew into a profession Shortly after the beginning of the twentieth. It is now, as a science, just entering its prime, its finest years still ahead. American forestry grew up pragmatically in the same way that its parent, the American political system, flourished. An idea was tried. If it worked, it was retained. If it did not, it was cast aside. This trial and error approach to national policy is uniquely possible in the United States because of the country's political structure. Because the states of the Union have retained large areas of sovereignty to themselves, the American nation is much like a network of great laboratories with a wide range of social, economic, and political experiments going on all the time. In no field has this trying and testing been more appropriate than in the field of forestry. Woodland conditions vary so radically from one part of the continent to an other that a national plan for forestry, even if it had been politically possible, would probably have been impossible technically during the infant years of the science. Instead the diversity of political and physical conditions in the states led to a healthier, more flexible, and more appropriate set of American forest policies than any centralized approach could have produced. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Peoples State Forest: Typical of the Second Growth Forests of Connecticut The Peoples Forest is located in the town of Barkhamsted on the ridge east of the west branch of the Farmington River between Riverton and Pleasant Valley. It owes its name to the fact that it has been entirely given to the State through private subscriptions made to the Connecticut Forestry Association and gifts of land direct to the State. This forest is surrounded by country roads and may be easily reached from Riverton or Pleasant Valley. Local History "The Barkhamsted lighthouse" far from navigable water is said to derive its name from the fact that the stage driver of early days, when settlements were far apart, would cheer his passengers by pointing to the light from these cabins and facetiously calling it the lighthouse. The remains of the old road may still be seen just above the present road, Closely associated with this settlement is the well known story of Molly Barber. She was brought up in Wethersfield, but after being thwarted in love by her father, made the boast that she would marry the first man who proposed whether he were white, red or black. Book excerpt: Excerpt from United States Department of the Interior-Forest Conservation Earliest conception of the Government's custodianship of the public domain was that such lands should be converted into cash for defray ing governmental expenses and for extinguishing the public dept. Dis posing of public domain was regarded as a real estate business, a viewpoint that continued until the present century. As a result of a sense of obligation to those who served in the armies during wartime, the public lands were regarded as suitable rewards for veterans: in deed, gifts of lands had been held out as inducements for enlistment into the army. Thus the early policy was dominated by the idea that the new public domain should be disposed of as a source of rev enue and as a substitute for cash to reward soldiers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recreation Uses on the National Forests Passing from ancient law in England to present conditions in the United States of America. We find that recreation uses on the National Forests are rapidly increasing, and that they have reached a stage where more definite and systematic provision must be made for them in the plan of administration. In view of this situa tion, the Forester, early in 191 7, commissioned the writer to make an extended examination in the field and to report to him as to existing conditions of recreation, with recommendations of methods and general policies. The present report is based on a five months' field study of existing conditions. Visits were made to all the Forest districts, and to a considerable number of individual Forests. Special attention was naturally given to those regions where recreational developments appear to be most pressing. In this way it was possible to hold extended consultations with Forest officers having supervision of the lands thus used, and also with those private citizens who are using them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Forests, Forest Lands, and Forest Products of Eastern North Carolina The policy of the average citizen appears to be based upon the theory that our natural resources are inexhaustible, and that we should get all out of them we can to-day and let the future take care of itself. And so thoroughly grounded are these notions in our public and private policy that it is exceedingly difficult to secure the adoption of any plan which runs counter to them. But fortunately, in the matter of our forests, their preservation for use by a future generation need not prohibit the utilization of the valuable timber now standing by the present generation. It only demands that while we cut and make use of this timber we protect the young growth, and look to the restocking of our waste lands with valuable trees, pnd thus make the forest valuable for future generations also. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Central States Timber Resources A final revised report is scheduled for publication and release to the public in 1957. The trr combines information derived from special field studies with that obtained from assembling and updating the best data already available. Area and volume statistics were adjusted to January 1, 1953; timber cut and utilization figures are for the calendar year 1952. The task was made possible through excellent cooperation between federal and state agencies and private industries. This report is for managers of forest land, forest industry personnel, and all others interested in the forests of the Central States. The statistics presented here are taken from the tre data except for those that pertain to Iowa. Iowa figures are based on a more intensive survey completed after data were assembled for the trr. Regular forest surveys of the other five Central States were completed before national statistics were assembled. In some cases, tables included in this report are presented in more detail than will be possible in the thb publication. The area and volume figures shown by ownerships may differ slightly from figures published by the agencies concerned. This is because of differences in definitions, specifications, log rules, and cruising standards. Unless indicated otherwise, the board-foot volumes are expressed in net volume log scale International inch rule; cubic foot volumes show net log volume excluding bark.
