Book excerpt: Excerpt from State and Local Historical Societies At a meeting of the American Historical Association held in Chicago in December, 1904, Professor Henry E. Bourne, of Western Reserve University, and chairman of the Association's general committee, presented a report upon The Work of American Historical Societies. This was based upon an inquiry conducted by him into the scope and work of the principal societies, and was an interesting and suggestive preliminary survey of the field. As a result of the Bourne report, the Council of the Association appointed Mr. Benj. F. Shambaugh, Mr. Franklin L. Riley, and the undersigned, as a sub-committee of the general committee, charged with reporting at the 1905 meeting upon The Best Methods of Organization and Work on the Part of State and Local Historical Societies. The task thus assigned was found to be far from a holiday undertaking. As Professor Bourne pointed out: "They [the societies] are as diverse in aim and organization as the localities where they work or the periods when they originated." To attempt to prescribe a set of rules for the common conduct of institutions widely divergent in origin, per-sonelle, purpose, and income was obviously impracticable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Publications of the Mississippi Historical Society, Vol. 11 The most notable feature of the volume is the large number of contributions on the local history of reconstruction. A partial justification of the interest shown in this new and important phase of work will be found in an Appendix to the Proceedings. So far as is known to the editor, the University of Mississippi is the first educational institution to foster investigation in this particular field. It is hoped that the evidences of success shown by the contributions published in this and the preceding volume will encourage students in the colleges and universities through out the South to attempt similar lines of investigation. This volume also contains contributions on two historic inter state thoroughfares that have exerted much influence upon the history of Mississippi. The last two articles will doubtless be read with pleasure by students who are interested in the history of the Indians of the State. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Local History: How to Gather It, Write It, and Publish It This book is not intended for the person who has been fortunate enough to receive graduate training in the study and writing of history, though it is hoped that even such an individual may, perhaps, find useful suggestions in the chapters that follow. Neither is it primarily for the sociologist or the genealogist, though each may find it serviceable, for they, like the local historian, will have to go to the same sources for their information about local conditions in the past. It is, instead, meant to give to the individual of intelligence, with more than average educational advantages, the necessary information for gathering, writing, and publishing the history of his own community his village, town, City, or county. It is hoped that such a serious-minded graduate of a high school or college will find in it useful instruction in the technique of gathering, writing, and publishing local history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Publications of the American Jewish Historical Society, 1920, Vol. 27 The present volume, however, presents the real work of the Rev. J. J. Lyons, for it contains the result of his inde fatigable industry in collecting material on American Jewish history. In order to obtain data, Mr. Lyons in the course of many years examined thousands of volumes on American local history, entering his finds in a number of note books, in addition to which he collected original documents wherever available as well as rare pamphlets and newspaper clippings. As stated in the introduction to the first volume, the result of these labors remained hidden from the world for many years, so that a very large portion of his sources was discovered independently by other workers in the same field, and had been published in our Publications before the work of Mr. Lyons was placed within the reach of scholars by the generous gift of his children. Despite this fact, however, there still re mained so much material, part of which is entirely new, while the rest is valuable as amplifying material already published, that the present volume will be found to be a useful source book for workers in this field. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the Illinois State Historical Society, Vol. 1: July and October 1908 Professor Sparks has collected all available local historical material in regard to each Of the seven joint debates; to this is added extracts from contemporary newspapers, and the full text Of each Of the debates, and an historical resum Of the events leading up to the debates. Members of the historical society will receive this valuable volume. It will also be sent to libraries, universities, etc. It is an admirable valedictory work for Professor Sparks upon his leaving the State for his new field of labor as president Of the State College of Pennsylvania. The educational and historical interests Of Illinois will suffer a great loss in the removal Of Professor Sparks from the State, and while the Illinois State Historical Society has reluctantly accepted his resignation as a director of the society, it has, at the suggestion Of its board Of directors elected him an honorary member Of the society. Change in the Time of Holding the Annual Meeting of the illinois State Historical Society. The members Of the State Historical Society will no doubt remem ber that thirty days previous to the last annual meeting Of the society, in January last, notice was sent by the secretary to each' member Of the society notifying him that a proposed change in the constitution Of the society would be voted upon at the annual meeting in regard to changing the time Of the year for holding the annual meeting. When the society was organized, it was thought that it would be wise to hold the annual meeting in January, as in that month ou alternate years, the regular sessions Of the General Assembly begin in Springfield, and it was thought that the meeting Of the society would attract the attention and interest Of members of the Legislature, and might be Of service in securing legislation favorable to the interests Of the society.
