Book excerpt: For 21st-century entrepreneurs, this book provides the practical guidance they need to overcome the often intimidating challenges of starting, organizing, and running a new business effectively and efficiently. The economic downturn has many individuals considering going into business for themselves, rather than relying on an employer for their income. Unfortunately, according to data from the Small Business Administration, the odds of long-term success are against them: 69 percent of businesses do not last past seven years and 56 percent fail in less than four. This book provides entrepreneurs with a comprehensive guide to the resources they need or will likely want to consult when starting a small business—and in order to stay profitable over the long run. The Entrepreneur's Information Sourcebook: Charting the Path to Small Business Success, Second Edition provides the expert guidance and up-to-date print and web resources an entrepreneur may need to make his business thrive and grow, from inception and information gathering, to raising capital, to marketing methods and human resource concerns. Nearly half of the resources in this newly updated book are new, and the essays have also been updated to reflect current business practices. This book is an essential tool that provides quick and easy access to the information every small business owner needs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ivanko and Kivirist - innkeepers, authors, and wearers of many other hats - truly walk the green talk, detailing the nitty-gritty of running a green business. - Library Journal I'm not even sure I'd call this a "business book." ECOpreneuring contains plenty of advice on starting a small, eco-conscious business, but the authors focus primarliy on how entrepreneurial efforts can incorporate values and priorities beyond the bottom line. Lifestyle choices trump profit motives, but neither have to be sacrificed in order to create meaning and income. This kind of positive thinking is repeated again and again throughout the book. In addition to sharing their own success, and the stories of others, ECOpreneuring is filled with practical information about starting and running a small green business. A potential ecopreneur will discover ideas on everything from bookkeeping to marketing, and the authors point to numerous other resources that will help you set up your company, and run your business without running afoul of tax codes, licensing agencies, or litigious competitors. I really enjoyed this thoughtful, well-written book - a business book that's inspiring and practical is hard to come by. ECOpreneuring lays out a blueprint for making health, happiness and abundance an integral part of the work we do. Reviewed by Jeff McIntire-Strasburg, Sustainablog Powerful social trends toward green living, relocalization, and self-sufficiency have fanned the fires of would-be ecopreneurs in North America, driving a shift toward prioritizing purpose over profits, and building community over building market share. A nation of nine-to-fivers is giving way to a spirited bunch of innovators, searching for ways to make a life instead of simply making a living. This accessible and inspiring guide includes profiles of successful ecopreneurs and provides an in-depth exploration of: Eco-business basics Purposeful management Marketing in the green economy Running a lifestyle business Ecopreneuring shows how we can earn our daily bread on a local or regional level while saving money, strengthening the economy, and helping restore the planet to ecological health and social stability. Part small business manifesto, part personal finance primer, Ecopreneuring is essential reading for small business owners, prospective entrepreneurs, and anyone who dreams of a livelihood based on independence, creativity, passion, and a commitment to green practices and sustainability. Book excerpt: The change in climatic conditions has resulted in a series of events from the melting of polar ice to the rising of sea levels. This has affected low-lying coastal areas by endangering plants and animals, agriculture and livelihood patterns in general, not to mention causing the outbreak of diseases like dengue, malaria, etc. It is, thus, imperative that mitigation measures to stabilize or reduce the concentration of carbon dioxide is brought about. A key step is the bio-fixation of carbon from the atmosphere. This book attempts to bring forth the role of vegetation in carbon sequestration. The introductory chapters of the book deal with the understanding of the physical attributes governing climate on earth, historical account of climate change, impacts of climate change on different environs and eco-strategies to combat climate change. Detailed account of mechanism of carbon sources and sinks, carbon credits and REDD+ are also discussed. A sizeable portion of the book is dedicated to the climate change and phonological variability, clean development mechanism and economic stability through natural resource management. Academicians, researchers, policy makers and environmental stakeholders will find it a useful and comprehensive guide in the floristic and arboreal potential to sequester carbon dioxide and will suffice the diverse needs of teaching and research.

Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Introduction: The purpose of this paper Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) as an International Marketing Approach is to identify an approach to merchandize corporate social responsibility on an international level. Solely promoting a company s CSR initiatives and its philosophy globally has not yet been attempted. My intention is to illustrate the possibilities of promoting CSR internationally, due to the fact of the rising interest in the subject and the resulting pressure from the outside world. To pursue this goal, general information about corporate social responsibility will have to be illustrated, along with two basic examples at the beginning, so the reader can understand the main framework of CSR. It is shown how companies can evaluate the potential that lie behind the implementation, demonstrating benefits for the company itself and other parties that can profit from CSR initiatives. Is CSR a product, a service or non of it? Is it possible to promote it as a whole? If not, how can something that is not a product or service be merchandized? These questions will be answered during the course of the paper. Possible problems of this approach during the analysis will be illustrated and swept aside with countermeasures. To demonstrate the possibilities of using CSR as an international marketing tool, the aspects which can be of use to this approach will be identified. The approaches are underlined by examples making it easier for the reader to follow. Moreover parallels of CSR aspects will be demonstrated to clarify the similarities between them. It has to be mentioned as well that there are approaches by companies to mislead consumers with false claims for their own profit. But countermeasures against these black sheep have been taken and the result will be revealed. What role does marketing really play for CSR? The relationship between a company s CSR philosophy and its possible marketing approaches involve different kinds of commitment which will be looked at in detail. But companies also have the possibility to find prominent partners for their efforts to show their social involvement. As a consequence several parties can profit from it due to mutual engagement and goals. In today s times in which globalization plays a big role, a company s CSR initiatives cannot be kept solely on a small scale but must be transferred onto an international level. The question how CSR aspects can be merchandized globally will [...]

Book excerpt: Economic activity imposes increasing costs on the global environment. The lack of progress being made in environmental management is often not as much a question of economics, technology or even of interest, as it is of perception, assumptions and how one approaches problems. Green Logic seeks to highlight the key questions regarding entrepreneurship and sustainability in terms of motivation, government intervention and ethics. Written by the highly regarded author of Managing World Economic Change, this important and accessible new book aims to examine how "Green Logic" works, how it differs from other logics and how green thinking can be targeted in order to create environmentally responsible businesses in an era of rapid change. Key questions addressed in depth include:What are the minimal ethical principles to guide environmental living and working? What motives and obstacles characterise ecopreneurship? What principles of creativity and entrepreneurship can be used as tools? In short, what does it really take to motivate entrepreneurs to design and start up green businesses? Green Logic is suitable for both business and academic audiences and significantly pushes forward the debate on environmental responsibility.

Numerous studies from the likes of the Economist Intelligence Unit, Harvard, MIT Sloan, and others indicate that organizations that commit to goals of zero waste, zero harmful emissions, and zero use of nonrenewable resources clearly outperform their competition. Like lean thinking, greening your business is not just a ‘nice to have’; at least not anymore. It is now a key economic driver for many forward looking firms. This book is packed with case studies and examples that illustrate how leading firms use lean and green as simultaneous sources of inspiration in various sectors of industry - from automotive and retail to textile and brewing. Take Toyota as an example, the holy grail of economic efficiency for decades. This book, shows that Toyota tops the green chart too, describing Toyota’s notion of Monozukuri: sustainable manufacturing. Creating a Lean and Green Business System: Techniques for Improving Profits and Sustainability offers opportunities for innovation that can simultaneously reduce dependence on natural resources and enhance global prosperity. It explores less understood aspects of lean and green – discussing their evolution independently as well as the opportunities that exist in their integration, highlighting the importance of a cultural shift across the whole company. Outlining a systematic way to eliminate harmful waste while generating green value, the book explains how to: Become economically successful and environmentally sustainable by adopting the lean and green business system model Adopt a systematic approach to become lean and green, and develop your own roadmap to success Use the cutting edge tools, techniques, and methodologies developed by the authors Translate the techniques and culture that underpin lean into environmental improvements Creating a Lean and Green Business System: Techniques for Improving Profits and Sustainability supplies a new way of thinking that will allow you to boost improvement efforts and create a positively charged work environment – while contributing to the long-term well-being of the environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research monograph answers the question how sustainability driven entrepreneurs (ecopreneurs) deliver their sustainability goals through their business practices. The research draws on data from 12 case studies set within the food industry. The analysis takes a firm level and a supply chain level perspective and provides insights to the interconnected nature of sustainability goals within and across firms. It provides theoretical propositions that show one approach of how to conduct business in a way that works for the planet and people in addition to shareholders. This presents an alternative understanding of organisational performance that builds the foundation for many avenues of future research into sustainable management. The research combines the remote areas of supply chain management and entrepreneurship at the intersection of sustainability. This novel approach and the insights from the business practice exploration, offer many avenues for further research beyond entrepreneurship and supply chain management. This book will be of interest to academics in management research and also to people with an academic background that work together with sustainability driven and/ or social entrepreneurs, who could benefit from the insights into how sustainability goals are delivered through business practices and the relevant trade-offs faced by ecopreneurs.
