Book Synopsis Testament of Abraham by : Dale C. Allison
Download or read book Testament of Abraham written by Dale C. Allison and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-08-26 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first verse-by-verse commentary on the Greek text of the Testament of Abraham places the work within the history of both Jewish and Christian literature. It emphasizes the literary artistry and comedic nature of the Testament, brings to the task of interpretation a mass of comparative material, and establishes that, although the Testament goes back to a Jewish tale of the first or second century CE, the Christian elements are much more extensive than has previously been realized. The commentary further highlights the dependence of the Testament upon both Greco-Roman mythology and the Jewish Bible. This should be the standard commentary for years to come.

Book excerpt: When religion meets comedy, it can get very interesting. So you thought the Bible was all about Jesus but then you tried to read it and found it full of genealogies and repetitions and wars and you could not get past Leviticus? What? You don't know who Leviticus was? That's alright. If you can't read the Bible cover to cover, you're a very normal person. And if you can't reconcile Sunday school with the real Bible, then you should read this book. The Bible is a combination of many things: *the product of thousands of years of folklore. *a bitter frustration with the Jewish captivity in Babylon and an attempt to make sense of it. *an ancient way of recording history (which is to say, not a history). *some beautiful poems. *some humorous tales. It is the last point that the author focuses on. There is humor in the stories of the Bible. Some or most of it is unintentional, but it is amazing what hindsight can do. This book condenses the narrative in a shocking or congenial way, depending on your point of view.

Book Synopsis Transforming Authority by : Katharina Pyschny
Download or read book Transforming Authority written by Katharina Pyschny and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human leadership is a multifaceted topic in the Hebrew Bible from a synchronic as well as diachronic perspective. A large range of distributions emerges from the successive sharpening or modification of different aspects of leadership. While some of them are combined to a complex figuration of leadership, others remain reserved for certain individuals. Furthermore, it can be considered a consensus within scholarly debate, that concepts of leadership have a certain connection to the history of ancient Israel which is, though, hard to ascertain. Following a previous volume that focused on the Pentateuch and the Former Prophets (BZAW 507), this volume deals with different concepts of leadership in selected Prophetic (Hag/Zech; Jer) and Chronistic literature Ezr/Neh; Chr). They are examined in a literary, (religious-/tradition-) historical and theological perspective. Special emphasis is given to phenomena of transforming authority and leadership claims in exilic/post-exilic times. Hence, the volume contributes to biblical theology and sheds new light on the redaction/reception history of the texts. Not least, it provides valuable insights into the history of religious and/or political “authorities” in Israel and Early Judaism(s).

Book Synopsis Handbook to Bach's Sacred Cantata Texts by : Melvin P. Unger
Download or read book Handbook to Bach's Sacred Cantata Texts written by Melvin P. Unger and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 1996-04-16 with total page 796 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The German church cantata of the eighteenth century was the culmination of a long tradition of Lutheran "sermon music" that used the proclamation, amplification, and interpretation of scripture to teach and persuade the listener. Bach's cantatas also served this didactic purpose and typically incorporate numerous allusions to scriptural passages or themes in their librettos. Unfortunately, many of these passages remain obscure to the twentieth-century musician because they demand a much closer familiarity with the Bible than is common today. The Handbook to Bach's Sacred Cantata Texts identifies scriptural references for the wording, imagery, and themes that Bach's listeners would have known. In addition, the religious or literary theme of each text is summarized within the specific context of the cantata as a whole. With interlinear translations and a full complement of indexes.
