Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Staring Into the Fire: A Celtic Story By: Loretta Santoro In the old days, before the ice, people talked to the spirits directly. In time, people narrowed their focus and forgot how to do that. There were few left who could do it—the truthsayers mostly, but even they had forgotten how to read the stones. So when it came to predicting the future, they couldn’t see very far. They did confirm that the rumors about an imminent invasion by the southern empire were true. How the people dealt with this news was up to each of them. Most would fight, of course, and those who wouldn’t or couldn’t hoped the invaders would treat them fairly. Meelah would fight. As any warrior would. But she is also a widowed mother and the daughter of a truthsayer, conflicting duties with conflicting purposes. With a clash of cultures looming over her, she begins to question her ways and decide for herself what parts are worth saving. As she searches for the ultimate truth, she concludes that the best she can do is to find her own truth because, in the end, her own truth is all that she can take with her.

Book excerpt: People like stories. They like to read them, they like to hear them, and they like to tell them. Ill never forget the stories of my wifes cousin Uncle Charles whod pour a cup of coffee, light up his favorite pipe, and begin to recall his seafaring days in the US Navy as we both sat at his small dining room table under the dim light of a homemade Tiffany-like lamp. Hed casually speak of wartimes as if it were just a Sunday walk in the park, only slowing his tempo a bit when it came to those near-death experiences, like nearly being crushed to death as he got pinned between a ship and a dock piling, waiting and praying as the massive ship eased away from the piling with a swell instead of popping open his barrel chest against the timber. I always anxiously anticipated our story time together. Unfortunately, Charles eventually passed away. Two careers, one ending as a lieutenant commander of the navy and one as a captain in a sheriffs department, had finally taken its toll on his health. I miss him, but his stories live on in my mind. So if stories within our lifetime can impact us and stay with us so long, what kind of story would it have to be to survive over two thousand years of human history? Just such a story is the legend of Deirdre of the Sorrows. My first encounter with this legend was actually musical in nature. In a little shop outside of Chattanooga, Tennessee, I first heard the music of A Celtic Tale by Hearts of Space, and the sound captured my imagination. Not even knowing what the music was about, I bought the cassette and began investigating the tale of Deirdre of the Sorrows that had inspired this music. Think about it! Some old Irish legend survives several millennia and inspires some extremely talented musicians on the west coast of the USA to orchestrate a whole album of music about it! Thats intriguing. From there, I wrote my own narrative to the music and, in time, began contemplating more deeply about this complex tale of love, betrayal, and human destiny. After reading many versions of this tale and looking at the archeological evidence from this time period in Northern Ireland, a more complete story started to formulate itself in my mind. Whether I wanted to or not, it became apparent over time that I was bound by some unseen force to write this novel. Here is the gist of the story. A dark and powerful druid prophesizes that the most beautiful woman in the world will be born, marry one of three highly admired young brothers in Ireland, and eventually cause the downfall of the kingdom. Instead of killing the baby when she was born, the king decides to raise the girl and marry her on her sixteenth birthday to nullify the prophecy . . . like that was going to work! Well, you can imagine . . . no, wait. You dont have tojust read the story!

Book excerpt: It is 1863, and a bitter Cree warrior named Broken Arrow stalks a lone Irishman called Mac, as he hobbles across the blistering prairie that is now known as Manitoba, Canada. Mac is surprised to find, however, that his traveling companion does intend to kill him, and the two become fast friends as they attempt to survive the harsh climate. Although the men are comrades, differing values and cultures threaten to tear their friendship apart. Mac is drawn to the mystical side of the land, finding parallels in ancient goddess history and comfort in his Celtic heritage as he learns First Nation beliefs. But he must first face his inner fears before he is worthy of meeting an ancient Mother Earth spirit known as Mud Woman, who visits him in his dreams. Broken Arrow, on the other hand, becomes more and more alienated due to the white mans encroaching destruction and greed. He seeks guidance from Powakan, an ancient spirit who teaches him to think for himself. When We Still Laughed is the story of these men and their journeys as some of the last pioneers in a new and changing world where French trappers, Metis hunters, Celtic pioneers, and First Nation warriors gather together and build Canadas history through their stories and laughter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in Belfast during World War II, raised in a working-class Protestant family, and educated on scholarship at Queen's University, writer Stewart Parker's story is in many ways the story of his generation. Other aspects of his personal history, though, such as the amputation of his left leg at age 19, helped to create an extraordinarily perceptive observer and commentator. Steeped in American popular culture as a child and young adult, he spent five years teaching in the United States before returning to Belfast in August 1969, the same week British troops responded to sectarian disturbances there. Parker had developed a sense of writing as a form of political action in the highly charged atmosphere of the US in the late 1960s, which he applied in many and varied capacities throughout the worst years of the Troubles to express his own socialist and secular vision of Northern Irish potential. As a young aspiring poet and novelist, he supported himself with free-lance work that brought him into contact with institutions ranging from BBC Northern Ireland to the Irish Times (for which he wrote personal columns and the music review feature High Pop) and from the Queen's University Extramural Department to Long Kesh internment camp (where his creative writing students included Gerry Adams). It is as a playwright, however, that Parker earned a permanent spot in the literary canon with drama that encapsulates his experience of Northern Ireland in the 1970s. Marilynn Richtarik's Stewart Parker: A Life illuminates the genesis, development, and meaning of such classic plays as Spokesong, Northern Star, and Pentecost - works that continue to shed light on the North's past, present, and future - in the context of Parker's life and times. Meticulously researched and engagingly written, this critical biography rewards general readers and specialists alike.

Book excerpt: Now in paperback, this first novel of an epic fantasy trilogy reintroduces readers to the beloved and bestselling world of Deverry, blending magic, politics, and adventure in an unforgettable setting. The bards are the people's voice--and their sword. All over the kingdom of Deverry, the common people are demanding reform of the corrupt law courts. In Aberwyn, the situation catches fire when Gwerbret Ladoic, second in authority only to the High King, allows a bard to starve to death rather than hear their grievances. Guildwoman Alyssa, a student at the local scholars' collegium, and Lady Dovina, the gwerbret's own daughter, know that evidence exists to overthrow the so-called traditional legal system, if they can only get it into the right hands. The powerful lords will kill anyone who threatens their privileges. To retrieve the proof, Alyssa must make a dangerous journey that will either change her life forever--or end it.
