His presence as its figure-head, guiding hand and representative to the wider world made him famous but this book celebrates his own work - the paintings he made through a long life lived in and around the fishing village of Newlyn. It marks the anniversary of seventy years since his death in 1947 with the largest survey of his paintings ever produced.

Book Synopsis Harold Harvey: Painter of Cornwall by : Kenneth McConkey
Download or read book Harold Harvey: Painter of Cornwall written by Kenneth McConkey and published by . This book was released on 2024-04-25 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harold Harvey, a true 'son of Cornwall', has been one of the most under-rated and least written about members of the Newlyn 'School' of artists which flourished from 1880 to 1930. The son of a bank manager, he grew up in Penance, and after studying under Norman Garstin and a spell in Paris, he settled to a quiet life in Newlyn with fellow-artist Gertrude, painting he Cornwall he know from the inside. In his introductory essay, Professor Kenneth McConkey sets Harvey in the context of the art moments of the time, and shows how his early 'genre' paintings of rustic and marine life, so characteristic of the early Newlyn artists, gradually gave way to more sophisticated subject matter - Harvey was noted for his sumptuous interiors - and a flatter and more decorative style of painting. His early work might be compared with that of Stanhope Forbes, while his later paintings show clear affinities with those of fellow painters such as Laura Knight and Dod Procter. Professor McConkey's essay complements the first significant 'life' of Harold Harvey, researched and written by Peter Risdon and Pauline Sheppard, which is in turn illuminated by Peter Risdon's painstakingly compiled catalogue raisonne of over 600 paintings. Harvey's painting output was prodigious, and this book includes approximately 100 illustrations of his favoured subjects: the Cornish at work, children at play, and intimate interior scenes and conversation pieces.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laura Knight (1877-1970) was one of the most distinguished women artists of the early 20th century with an international reputation. This much-anticipated biography appears at a time of renewed interest in Dame Laura's extensive repertoire. Laura Knight: A Life probes beneath the myths and fictions that have and continue to be woven around the artist. This highly readable and objective biography covers her early years in Nottingham; relationship with her husband Harold; life in the artists colonies of Staithes on the North Yorkshire coast, Laren in Holland and Newlyn in Cornwall; Laura's subsequent immersion in the worlds of the ballet, the circus, the theatre and her travels in Europe and America; her work as a designer of theatrical costume, posters and ceramics; and her role as Official War Artist during World War 11 and recorder of the Nuremberg Trials in 1945-46. The author does more than merely draw the solid lines of Dame Laura's professional and public identity for the reader, she fills in the background, expresses the light and colour of Laura Knight's vibrant personality and, by also exploring the darker shades of her character, gives this portrait of the artist depth and perspective. If you read just one biography of Laura Knight it should be this one.

Book excerpt: Mary Cameron: Life in Paint' explores the fascinating story of Cameron?s life and career, charting her creative journey from elegant family portraits to breathtaking Spanish scenes. Mary Cameron (1865-1921) was an artist and woman ahead of her time. Born in Edinburgh, she began her career as a portraitist and genre painter in her native city, before venturing abroad to study in Paris. Foreign travel proved to be an enduring source of inspiration. In 1900 she visited Madrid for the first time, and was captivated by the Spanish culture, people and scenery. Establishing studios in Madrid and Seville, she executed large-scale compositions of traditional peasant life, dramatic bullfights and rural landscapes. Cameron exhibited widely, and her talents were recognised by contemporaries such as John Lavery and Alexander Roche. However, like many female artists of her generation, her name is now little-known. Exhibition: City Art Centre, Edinburgh, UK (02.11.2019-15.03.2020).

Download or read book The Golden Dream written by Pamela Lomax and published by Sansom Company Limited. This book was released on 2004 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Thomas Cooper Gotch, born in Kettering in 1854, spent most of his painting life in Newlyn, with spells in the Home Counties. He travelled widely on the continent - living in France and visiting Italy and Skagen, Denmark - and collections of his work in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa bear witness to his strong links with the Commonwealth countries." "Gotch and his painter wife Caroline were popular members of the Newlyn 'art colony', active in the artists' theatricals and social gatherings. Gotch painted few Newlyn paintings of distinction - his imagination soared far beyond the recording of everyday life - but one of his most notable en plein air paintings, Mental Arithmetic, predated Stanhope Forbes's iconic Fish Sale on a Cornish Beach, and was one of the first 'Newlyn School' paintings to be acquired by a public collection." "Pamela Lomax's biography is the first full-length study of a remarkable painter of great vision who, despite his many friendships and art-world affiliations, was far and away the most individualistic of the Newlyn artists. He was a founder member of the New English Art Club, set up by French-trained artists to challenge the conservatism of the Royal Academy. From some time he greatly admired and supported James McNeill Whistler, but when divisions occurred in the NEAC, he favoured Newlyn realism to the impressionism of the London-based members."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Synopsis The Drawings of Roger Hilton by : Adrian Lewis
Download or read book The Drawings of Roger Hilton written by Adrian Lewis and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract painter Roger Hilton (1911-75) is generally considered the best British post-war abstract expressionist. This book - the outcome of over four decades of research - focuses on his drawings and stakes a claim for Roger Hilton being the most inventive draughtsman whom Britain has produced since 1945. Looking at typical Hilton drawing and its qualities, the book includes chapters devoted to his childhood drawings and art college works. The author discusses Hilton's Slade days, the 1930s years in Paris and London and then covers the important resumption of drawing activity after his return from the war. The way in which he resumed figurative drawing in the late 1950s in the light of his abstract painting is explored, as is the promotion of artists' drawings by his dealer. This book presents for the first time the serial development of Hilton's images and their imaginative transformation, and notes what Hilton drew on from Matisse, Picasso and, briefly, Klee. It demonstrates his play between the abstract qualities of drawn mark and their figurative implications, and his personal existential investment in his drawing practice. His expression of sexual desire and his spontaneity of drawing practice are put into cultural context. The reputation of Hilton as a draughtsman can only grow as his work is revealed --
