Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In These Dark Skies, Arianne Zwartjes interweaves the experience of living in the southern Netherlands—with her wife, who is Russian—and the unfolding of both the refugee crisis across Europe and the uptick in terrorist acts in France, Greece, Austria, Germany, and the Balkans. She probes her own subjectivity, as a white American, as a queer woman in a transcultural marriage, as a writer, and as a witness. The essays investigate and meditate on a broad array of related topics, including drone strikes, tear gas, and military intervention; the sugar trade, the Dutch blackface celebration of Zwarte Piet, and constructions of whiteness in Europe and the U.S.; and visual arts of Russian avant-garde painters, an Iraqi choreographer living in Belgium, and German choreographer Pina Bausch. This is a lyrical, timely book deeply salient to the political moment we continue to find ourselves in: a moment of incredible anti-refugee and anti-immigrant sentiment, a moment of xenophobic and misogynistic violence.

Book excerpt: Valerie, a third book of poetry by Laurel Highlands Author and Poet William C Semo. When you ask what inspires poetry, it is the friendships of one's life. In this book a dedication of poetry to an old friend who recently passed, one who stood by him and believed in him through his many life struggles. Their friendship, unconditional, always pure and spiritual with a sweet ""I love you."" in parting with one another. ""It is the kind of poetry she liked, the kind she would read. Whether I would hand it to her or just leave it at her doorstep. The kind that I carry with me in my moleskins and whose meaning carries with us all into the hereafter. It is about her and many other things because the heart is all that matters in the end."" -William C Semo

Book excerpt: Hektor’s life of privilege is forever changed when a man, allegedly possessed by the sun god, inspires revolution among the oppressed townspeople of Wilusa – the historical Troy of myth. For Hektor, son of Bronze Age Wilusa’s despotic ruler, social equality contradicts every principle he has been indoctrinated into believing. But his principles and obsession with duty is alienating him from his young son, Hapi, with whom he has a fractured relationship. When the ‘possessed’ man saves Hapi’s life, Hektor is compelled to question the foundations upon which his father has constructed his life as he rebuilds his relationship with his child through the breaking of a foal. Wilusa collapses into political violence as the commoners rise up, and Hektor must decide whether to defend the people, but lose his identity, or remain loyal to an irrational, dangerous father. Breaking the Foals is a breathless gallop through an ancient world carved out by tradition, stained with blood and immortalised in the lives of heroes and villains.

Millions of people have felt called to integrate both ancient and modern healing systems into a new model of healthcare. But what makes shamanic healing so powerful? Why have indigenous healers kept it alive for thousands of years? Revealing his personal journey and stories from his more than 20 years as a shamanic healer, Itzhak Beery explains who a shaman is and how he or she works, demystifying and destigmatizing the shamanic healing worldview. He shares shamanic wisdom from two of his teachers: a Yachak from Ecuador and a well-known Brazilian Pagé. He details indigenous medicine tools and soul healing techniques that you can practice with your own clients or in your own personal healing, including diagnosis and energy cleansing with plants, stones, fire, rum, eggs, flower essences, and sound. He shares protection and self-defense techniques for confronting negative energies, such as spirit attachment and possession. Sharing healing stories that each address a specific condition, such as panic attacks, PTSD, depression, cancer, chronic pain, grief, and relationship problems, Beery explains how a shaman is not responsible for curing everyone and will consult with the patient’s soul to determine its needs, which sometimes includes learning from the illness experience. By sharing these healing methods, Beery reveals the importance of shamanic practices in resolving our 21st-century emotional and physical problems and their importance to the future of humanity and the planet.

This book was released on 2020-07-07 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the notion of the human psyche (‘soul’) and its continuing usefulness in the background of the ongoing and always accelerating techno-scientific revolution. The main argument here follows the assumption that this revolution, while not necessarily being a threat to humankind, is often blind or ignorant as to its subject, the ‘human being’. In the first chapters, the reader is invited to reflect on the notion of ‘thinking’ as a phenomenon of consciousness that transcends merely ‘having thoughts’. Relating thinking to consciousness requires reconsidering the phenomena of ‘inspiration’ and ‘ecstasy’. Provided that such a thing as ‘inspiration’ exists, it makes sense to revise the solipsist or substantialist account often given of the human mind. The book defines inspiration as a ‘clairvoyance of one’s psyche’, and ecstasy as the experience of this clairvoyance. Next, a case is made for synchronicity experiences as a key to a better understanding of the human psyche. While being enigmatic all throughout, synchronicity experiences, both on the individual and on the collective level, help overcome both subject/object and body/mind dualisms. It is not likely, though, that the solution they could offer will be readily accepted by (what is called) ‘science’ today, since it challenges one of the latter’s basic premises, ‘causality’. As a more concrete example of a condensed synchronicity experience, the author dwells on ‘physiognomy’. In the final chapter, death and suffering are discussed as extreme, and therefore relevant, experiences of consciousness. The book interprets death in terms of ‘enhanced subliminality’, and ‘suffering’ as unconscious resistance against maturing. Generally, this book explores a psycho-philosophical tradition, rooted in Romantic thinking (from Schelling and Schopenhauer until Klages and Jung), which has hitherto been unjustly neglected, if not repressed, by mainstream materialism and positivism. It makes a strong case for an intellectual account of the soul.

Book excerpt: THE FIREBIRD AFFAIR centers on the suspicious death of Emily, the beautiful wife of WASHINGTON TRIBUNE correspondent Todd Martin. In 1991, she collapsed over lunch with a friend in a Moscow restaurant. A massive heart attack, Moscow authorities said and the US Embassy concurred. They shipped her body home to the US, without Todd even being aware she had died. He was out of contact covering one of the conflicts flaring up as the Soviet Union disintegrated. But Todd has managed to rebuild his life; he's now the TRIBUNE's chess columnist, from time to time drifting in and out of depression. He has always been doubtful Emily's death was an accident. His estranged son Rick is certain his mother was murdered, and blames his father for failing to protect her. By 2002, Todd gets an opportunity to establish the truth after a Russian spy approaches the CIA wanting to defect. The spy reveals the existence of a KGB mole inside the US government. He also alleges that the KGB played a role in Emily's death by sneaking a psychotropic drug into her drink. Holz, the former Moscow CIA station chief, now a senior CIA official, offers Todd the chance to go to Moscow on a rogue mission to uncover the traitor's identity. Todd undertakes the mission that leads him as well as Holz to confront wholly unexpected results. THE FIREBIRD AFFAIR explores the consequences of duplicity and betrayal, in both Moscow and Washington. It revolves around the actual KGB-led plot to remove Gorbachev from power, capturing the drama of the last months of Cold War and the subsequent changes in our public life.
