Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a hot Sunday in August, the entire community of Little Blue, Nebraska, changed forever. Groups of Cheyenne, Sioux, and Arapaho Indians attacked and destroyed nearly every home and stagecoach station in Little Blue. People were murdered or taken, homes burned. Rebecca Walker made sure her little brothers were safely hidden away but had no time to hide herself. Taken captive and sold to the Sioux, she wondered if she would ever be reunited with her loving, grieving family. With the relentless invasion of the white man, the Plains Indians found themselves at war, not only with them but with each other as they all struggled to survive. The Pawnee were angry as they were attacked yet again by the Sioux, and the food they worked for was stolen. The hunters decided to take back meat that was rightfully theirs. As they stormed the Sioux village, they expected bloodshed but not the presence of a striking young white woman. Standing Bear, a young Pawnee brave, felt shocked when he looked at her, thinking at first that she was a ghost. Little did he know that his impulsive decision to take her with them would profoundly impact his life and the lives of not only his people but of hers and so many others along their journey.

Book excerpt: “Enlightening and inspiring.” — Walter Isaacson “Barry probes the American soul, finding its biases, but also, nurtured by its complicated past, our better angels — with an opportunity to move forward.” — Ken Burns Bringing together two of America’s unifying loves — road trips and Abraham Lincoln — Frank Barry takes readers on a thought-provoking journey into the heart of our democracy and the soul of our country A year into his marriage and having never driven an RV, Frank and his wife Laurel set out from New York City in a Winnebago to drive the nation’s first transcontinental route, the Lincoln Highway, which zigzags through small towns and big cities from Times Square to San Francisco. Using the spirit of Abraham Lincoln to guide them across the land, they hope to see more clearly what holds the country together — and how we can keep it together, even amidst political divisions have grown increasingly rancorous, bitter, and exhausting. Along the way, Frank and Laurel meet Americans whose personal experiences help humanize the nation’s divisions, and they encounter historical figures and events whose legacies are still shaping our sense of national identity and the struggles over it. This unforgettable journey is full of what makes any great road trip memorable and enjoyable: music, conversation, and laughter. By the end, readers will have a clearer picture of how we have arrived at a period that carries echoes of the Civil War era, and — using Lincoln as a guide — where the path forward lies.

Book Synopsis Hans Andersen's Fairy Tales - Illustrated by Anne Anderson - Part I by : Hans Christian Andersen

This book was released on 2013-04-16 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection, ‘Hans Andersen’s Fairy Tales’ contains eighteen of Hans Christian’s best-loved tales, and is illustrated by the charming plates and black and white line drawings of Anne Anderson. The stories include: ‘Little Ida's Flowers'; ‘The Red Shoes'; ‘The Snow Queen'; ‘The Emperor's New Clothes'; ‘The Constant Tin Soldier'; ‘The Flying Trunk'; ‘The Wild Swans'; ‘The Real Princess'; ‘Elfin Mount'; ‘The Storks'; and ‘The Darning Needle’. Hans Christian Andersen (1805 – 1875) was a Danish poet and author celebrated for his children’s stories but perhaps best known for his fables and fairy tales – meant for both adults and children. They were frequently written in a colloquial style, using idioms and spoke language in a manner previously unseen in Danish literature. Though simple at first glance, Hans Andersen’s fairy tales often convey sophisticated moral teachings, in equal measure heart-breaking and heart-warming. Anne Anderson (1874 – 1930) was a prolific Scottish illustrator, primarily known for her art nouveaux children’s book illustrations. She also painted, etched and designed many greetings cards, with her illustrations appearing near the end of the Edwardian era. Presented alongside the text, her illustrations further refine and elucidate Andersen’s masterful storytelling. Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s classics and fairy tales – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration. We publish rare and vintage Golden Age illustrated books, in high-quality colour editions, so that the masterful artwork and story-telling can continue to delight both young and old.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: D. J. O'Connor had spent most of his adult life trying to find two Union Army officers that his family had assigned to have been from the ranks of the heavenly host because of help that they had provided to members of the family during the Civil War. Both men had done God's work on earth to benefit not only his family but the whole idea of the greater good. Following a clue, DJ went to a home in Biscay, Colorado, where he was welcomed by the family of not only Second Lieutenant Devon W. Labatte, the man he had been told he would find there but the late Major Dr. Earl Townsend, the other officer he had been looking for. The family invited DJ to sit with them to watch over Devon while he slept because they knew that his time was near. As he was seeing the man that he had so much appreciation, DJ's curiosity was racing. Surveying the room, DJ saw the evidence of a life well spent with tokens of travel and remembrances of special people and events. One special event was remembered in a very large painting with both men's families along with three other families, and on a small table near the bed was the photograph that the painter had used as a guide. DJ asked about the painting and how all the people in it had become intertwined into one family. For the rest of the day, DJ listened intensely to the story of how these two men who had been raised in different parts of the country and with very different financial backgrounds had overcome many obstacles, lived through the war, become friends, fought inner demons, and raised their families together, all the time treating everyone with respect and giving assistance to others as second nature.

Book Synopsis Christmas Plays by Oberufer: by : Rudolf Steiner
Download or read book Christmas Plays by Oberufer: written by Rudolf Steiner and published by Rudolf Steiner Press. This book was released on 2013-09-24 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For hundreds of years ordinary folk in the small Austrian village of Oberufer on the Danube gathered in the local tavern at Christmas time to perform these plays to their neighbours. With their roots lost in medieval times, the plays gradually evolved to incorporate a unique mixture of broad peasant humour and deep reverence in their celebration of the birth of the baby Jesus. The Paradise Play serves as a Preface, presenting the expulsion of Adam and Eve from Paradise, but with the promise of future salvation through Christ. The Shepherds Play follows with its portrayal of the birth of Jesus in a stable where he is sought out by a group of simple shepherds. The Kings Play, the final in the trilogy, depicts the visit of three wise Kings to the birthplace of the 'King of Humanity', and the murderous measures taken by Herod to try and thwart Jesus's mission. This revised edition of the plays - eminently suitable for amateur and professional companies alike - offers a clear layout of the texts, greatly elaborated director's and make-up indications, stage and lighting directions, and detailed costume designs illustrated in colour.
