Mira Simpson, a busy crime reporter at WQUZ in Pittsburgh, is struggling to keep up with her ten-hour work days while still finding time to care for her ill father. In the two years since his diagnosis with early onset Alzheimer's disease, Mira hasn't had time for a social life, and certainly not for a love life. Add in an overzealous fan making trouble for her, and Mira is in a constant state of stress. As if all that wasn't enough, Chris Noble-the infuriating and infuriatingly hot reporter from rival news station WBDD-has been promoted to his station's crime reporter position, putting him directly in Mira's path on a daily basis. While the two clash heads in the field, Mira can't help admitting that Noble's cocky attitude is turning her on to the point of distraction. But Mira doesn't have space in her life for a complication like Noble, especially when time with the man that raised her seems to be running out. But while Mira is trying to rebuild the wall she keeps between herself and the outside world, she finds her guard coming down where Noble is concerned. There's more to him than meets the eye, but can Mira trust her biggest rival? Or will she continue to put her heart on standby? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In deep-submicron processes a significant portion of the power budget is lost in standby power due to increasing leakage effects. For systems that have long idle times punctuated by bursts of activity, such as PDAs, cell-phones, and wireless sensor networks nodes, this standby power consumption reduces the effectiveness of duty-cycling. This work surveys a number of subthreshold leakage reduction techniques and identifies supply rail gating "MTCMOS" as the most promising. MTCMOS is a dynamic technique that has two distinct modes: an active processing mode and a lower power sleep mode. The smallest area implementations of MTCMOS have the side-effect of losing the state of the system when in sleep mode. This complicates the resumption of the active mode, because traditional designs are intolerent to the loss of state. This work presents a general framework to reduce the state maintenence requirements during sleep mode without losing information required to resume the active mode. The framework is applied to finite state machines and microprocessors, since these are commonly used in system design. Partitioning the system into subsystems with individually controlled supply rails "termed power domains" allows fine-grain control of the power mode for portions of the chip. Each power domain must be dynamically put in the appropriate power mode to ensure correct system operation while minimizing power consumption. This control logic collectively forms the core of a power manager. Most power manager implementation approaches are largely ad-hoc and custom designed for each application. This work presents a structured methodology and architecture for the implementation and control of power domains to form a power managed system. Approaches to the partitioning and implementation of individual power domains are explored. The functional requirements for the power manager

Book excerpt: This book introduces the reliability modelling and optimization of warm standby systems. Warm standby is an attractive redundancy technique, as it consumes less energy than hot standby and switches into the active state faster than cold standby. Since a warm standby component experiences different failure rates in the standby state and active state, the reliability evaluation is challenging and the existing works are only restricted to very special cases. By adapting the decision diagrams, this book proposes the methodology to evaluate the reliability of different types of warm standby systems and studies the reliability optimization. Compared with existing works, the proposed methods allow the system to have an arbitrary number of components and allow the failure time distribution of components to observe arbitrary distributions. From this book, the readers can not only learn how to evaluate and optimize the reliability of warm standby systems but also use the methods to study the reliability of other complex systems.

Book excerpt: From a prominent young historian, the untold story of the rich variety of gay life in America in the 1970s Despite the tremendous gains of the LGBT movement in recent years, the history of gay life in this country remains poorly understood. According to conventional wisdom, gay liberation started with the Stonewall Riots in Greenwich Village in 1969. The 1970s represented a moment of triumph -- both political and sexual -- before the AIDS crisis in the subsequent decade, which, in the view of many, exposed the problems inherent in the so-called "gay lifestyle". In Stand by Me, the acclaimed historian Jim Downs rewrites the history of gay life in the 1970s, arguing that the decade was about much more than sex and marching in the streets. Drawing on a vast trove of untapped records at LGBT community centers in Los Angeles, New York, and Philadelphia, Downs tells moving, revelatory stories of gay people who stood together -- as friends, fellow believers, and colleagues -- to create a sense of community among people who felt alienated from mainstream American life. As Downs shows, gay people found one another in the Metropolitan Community Church, a nationwide gay religious group; in the pages of the Body Politic, a newspaper that encouraged its readers to think of their sexuality as a political identity; at the Oscar Wilde Memorial Bookstore, the hub of gay literary life in New York City; and at theaters putting on "Gay American History," a play that brought to the surface the enduring problem of gay oppression. These and many other achievements would be largely forgotten after the arrival in the early 1980s of HIV/AIDS, which allowed critics to claim that sex was the defining feature of gay liberation. This reductive narrative set back the cause of gay rights and has shaped the identities of gay people for decades. An essential act of historical recovery, Stand by Me shines a bright light on a triumphant moment, and will transform how we think about gay life in America from the 1970s into the present day.

Book excerpt: Part memoir, part testimonial, and part life guide, Stand by Your Truth mixes Rickey Smiley’s down-home humor with the values he learned from being raised by three generations of elders, steeped in the Baptist church, and mentored by some of the most celebrated comics in the entertainment industry today. “I’m very passionate about everything that I do and I don’t play any games. I just keep it honest. I don’t put on airs. That’s the only way you can be. If you tell one lie, you’ve got to tell another lie. I’m cool with who I am. What you see is what you get.” Stand-up comic. Single dad. Radio personality. TV star. Prankster. Producer. Community activist. Man of faith. Visit a church, comedy club, college campus, or barber shop, and you’ll find few people who aren’t familiar with, or fans of, Rickey Smiley. At least four million listeners in more than seventy markets tune in every weekday morning to hear him banter with his radio show crew, hilariously prank call an unsuspecting listener, and perform skits featuring his one-man cast of characters, including “Lil Darryl,” “Beauford,” and “Joe Willie.” But in between the rapid-fire jokes and celebrity dish are flashes of how Rickey views the world, from the challenges of raising children, to the importance of education, to the need to always stand by your own truth. After more than two decades in the spotlight, Rickey is finally ready to delve more deeply into the opinions he voices on the air, riffing on those issues that his listeners, viewers, and fans find most important. This collection of personal and powerful essays will speak to readers from all walks of life, and is sure to inspire you to Stand by Your Truth.

Book excerpt: Instrumentation, Control and Automation of Water and Wastewater Treatment and Transport Systems 1993 comprises a selection of manuscripts on the development of control strategies and their applications and on the status and future directions of Instrumentation, Control, and Automation (ICA) in the water and wastewater industry. The book starts by providing an overview of the status, the constraints and the future prospects for ICA in water and wastewater treatment and transport based on the survey responses of experts from 16 different countries. The text continues by presenting the need for dynamic modeling and simulation software to assist operations staff in developing effective instrumentation control strategies and to provide a training environment for the evaluation of such strategies. The book also covers the critical variables in system success; the use of an enterprise-wide computing that emphasizes the importance of strategic planning, performance measures, and human factors associated with the suggested implementation of applied technology; and the use of part-time unmanned operation at a large wastewater treatment plant. A functional approach based on the utility’s water and wastewater functional requirements; the collection system monitoring and control; water distribution and control systems; dynamic modeling and simulation; and process control strategy and development are also considered. This book will be beneficial to biochemists, wastewater technologists, and public health authorities.
