Book excerpt: This book brings together authors from around the world to discuss the Standards for Technological and Engineering Literacy: The Role of Technology and Engineering in STEM Education (STEL) released in July 2020 by the International Technology and Engineering Educators Association (ITEEA). The various chapters examine and elaborate on how educators must understand the structure of the standards used and their alignment with educational programs at specific levels and contexts, both in the context of the USA, and internationally. It also showcases case studies analyzing the use of standards in their various contexts from a number of countries which have either adapted STEL, or which have national Standards in Technology Education. The STEL represents a major update to the content standards that has guided the field of technology education (and, later, technology and engineering education) in the USA since 2000. In contrast to previous standards, STEL presents a substantial reduction in the number of standards and associated benchmarks, and the benchmarks have been operationalized to identify the key knowledge, skills, and dispositions associated with each standard. It also emphasizes a focus on core standards that should allow for deeper levels of understanding and engagement on the part of students, who in comprehensive educational programs will continue to revisit these core standards in increasingly sophisticated ways as they progress from Pre-K through Grade 12.

Book excerpt: Science, engineering, and technology permeate nearly every facet of modern life and hold the key to solving many of humanity's most pressing current and future challenges. The United States' position in the global economy is declining, in part because U.S. workers lack fundamental knowledge in these fields. To address the critical issues of U.S. competitiveness and to better prepare the workforce, A Framework for K-12 Science Education proposes a new approach to K-12 science education that will capture students' interest and provide them with the necessary foundational knowledge in the field. A Framework for K-12 Science Education outlines a broad set of expectations for students in science and engineering in grades K-12. These expectations will inform the development of new standards for K-12 science education and, subsequently, revisions to curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional development for educators. This book identifies three dimensions that convey the core ideas and practices around which science and engineering education in these grades should be built. These three dimensions are: crosscutting concepts that unify the study of science through their common application across science and engineering; scientific and engineering practices; and disciplinary core ideas in the physical sciences, life sciences, and earth and space sciences and for engineering, technology, and the applications of science. The overarching goal is for all high school graduates to have sufficient knowledge of science and engineering to engage in public discussions on science-related issues, be careful consumers of scientific and technical information, and enter the careers of their choice. A Framework for K-12 Science Education is the first step in a process that can inform state-level decisions and achieve a research-grounded basis for improving science instruction and learning across the country. The book will guide standards developers, teachers, curriculum designers, assessment developers, state and district science administrators, and educators who teach science in informal environments.

Yet, people often balk at the thought of learning scienceâ€"the "eyes glazed over" syndrome. Teachers may find teaching science a major challenge in an era when science ranges from the hardly imaginable quark to the distant, blazing quasar. Inquiry and the National Science Education Standards is the book that educators have been waiting forâ€"a practical guide to teaching inquiry and teaching through inquiry, as recommended by the National Science Education Standards. This will be an important resource for educators who must help school boards, parents, and teachers understand "why we can't teach the way we used to." "Inquiry" refers to the diverse ways in which scientists study the natural world and in which students grasp science knowledge and the methods by which that knowledge is produced. This book explains and illustrates how inquiry helps students learn science content, master how to do science, and understand the nature of science. This book explores the dimensions of teaching and learning science as inquiry for K-12 students across a range of science topics. Detailed examples help clarify when teachers should use the inquiry-based approach and how much structure, guidance, and coaching they should provide. The book dispels myths that may have discouraged educators from the inquiry-based approach and illuminates the subtle interplay between concepts, processes, and science as it is experienced in the classroom. Inquiry and the National Science Education Standards shows how to bring the standards to life, with features such as classroom vignettes exploring different kinds of inquiries for elementary, middle, and high school and Frequently Asked Questions for teachers, responding to common concerns such as obtaining teaching supplies. Turning to assessment, the committee discusses why assessment is important, looks at existing schemes and formats, and addresses how to involve students in assessing their own learning achievements. In addition, this book discusses administrative assistance, communication with parents, appropriate teacher evaluation, and other avenues to promoting and supporting this new teaching paradigm.

Book excerpt: The TESOL Technology Standards are applicable in a wide range of contexts: foreign language, second language, child, teen, adult, higher education, vocational education, language for specific purposes, and fully online programs; and in settings with low, medium, or high resources and access to communication technologies. Students, teachers, teacher educators, administrators, and researchers will find this an easy guide through the technology standards and how they can be applied in the varied contexts in which language instruction occurs. The book is organized around two strands of standards: Technology Standards for Language Learners and Technology Standards for Language Teachers. Useful supplemental material included for the reader are a comparison of the TESOL Technology Standards with other technology-focused standards, extensive reference lists, a glossary, and an index. Even practitioners with little access to technology resources can apply the standards in their contexts, while those with a great deal of access to technology are encouraged to do as much as their resources will allow. Vignettes provide detail-specific resources, and attempt to offer free and open-source technology alternatives where possible, and in some instances they suggest technology for the physically disabled. Although the vignettes tend to focus on English language learning and teaching, the technology standards can be applied to languages other than English.

District XYZ is in the process of moving a skill based technology education program to a blend of skill and engineering based curriculum. District XYZ adopted Project Lead the Way into the high school and middle school curriculum. Project Lead the Way is a national program which involves the disciplines of technology, science, math, and literacy. This study identifies the technology standards used by Project Lead the Way and the process of adopting them into district XYZ. Project Lead the Way uses the standards for technological literacy created by the International Technology and Engineering Educators Association. Standards and benchmarks are outlined in each of the units of the Project Lead the Way curriculum. A focus group was used to identify which standards would fit into the districts standards based grading system. The focus group consisted of Technology education teachers and department heads. Findings from this study found agreement in three out of thirteen standards.

Book excerpt: Updated and streamlined for easier use, TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION FOR MEANINGFUL CLASSROOM USE: A STANDARDS-BASED APPROACH, 2E, International Edition equips readers with the knowledge, creative and critical thinking skills, and confidence needed to become "self-directed learners" who can successfully navigate the constantly changing environment of technology integration in the classroom. Using the principles of self-directed learning as its foundation, the book aims to help readers learn to evaluate and reflect on professional practice to make informed decisions regarding the use of technology in support of student learning. The first educational technology book organized around the 2008 National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS-T) developed by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), this standards-based approach provides the framework for developing, modeling, and teaching the skills and knowledge necessary for integrating technology in authentic teaching and learning. An end-of-book supplement provides examples of technology integration in practice within specific content areas, guided by the national standards that apply to each content domain.
