Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anatomy, Physiology and Hygiene for High Schools In no branch of education is this connection between knowledge and conduct or welfare more direct than in that which deals with the study of our own bodies, and of the laws and practices which must be observed in order to maintain a condition of health and activity in these bodies that is, the study of physiology and hygiene. For upon the Observation of these rules of hygiene depends the preservation of health, a first essential for usefulness as well as enjoyment in life. He can best and most intelligently observe these laws who is familiar with and understands the facts from which they are deduced, the phenomena of physiology. This study should therefore be a part of the education of each and all of us. It should be taken up in youth, for it is during this period that the organs and tissues of the body, the frame, the heart, the brain, are growing and taking on the character which they keep throughout life, and that the practices and habits which are the most deep seated and fundamental are forming. The health and character then acquired often prove the bed rock of the Whole physical, mental, and moral development. The errors committed then are often irreparable, and it is the province of our educational systems to insure that at least these errors shall not be committed through Ignorance. In preparing a text book for this purpose of general education in the schools, the point to be kept most In mind IS the unity of the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Standard School Physiology Hygiene Anatomy The authors of this book, believing, as they do, that the study of no subject in the school curriculum can yield greater practical benefit to the student than the study of physiology, send it forth in the hope that it may add a little to the sum of human knowledge upon this important subject. It is almost incredible that the study of physiology, by pupils in public schools, should have been so long delayed, and that its great importance should have received so slow and inadequate a recognition. This volume is believed to be adapted to the capacities and needs of students of academies, high schools, and the higher grammar grades. In school systems where the subject has been studied by the pupils from the time of their entering school, as is required by law in some of the States, this book will be found adapted to use in grades as low as the VIIth (seventh year in school), or possibly the VIth. It is also thought to contain as much as should be required in public or preparatory schools. Acknowledgments of the authors are due, and are freely made, to J. Howard Morgan, M.D., of Westerly, R. I., for his most painstaking reading and criticisms of the manuscript; also to Professor Elizabeth V. Gaines, of Adelphi College, Brooklyn, for her valuable criticisms and suggestions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anatomy, Physiology, Hygiene The facts of Anatomy and Physiology are put as sim ply and clearly as possible; something in the way of object lessons, with the child himself as an object. The pupil is encouraged to look in the fields and markets to see the truth of the statements made, and is constantly referred to the pictures that illustrate the text for a bet ter understanding. Common diseases are mentioned, and the habits that lead to them emphasized. The book is in two parts, because it seems wiser to learn the parts and uses of a machine before attempting to run it, and the dependence of the systems is so inti mate that a knowledge of all should precede an attempt to study the hygiene of any one. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Anatomy, Physiology and Hygiene for Higher Grammar Grades Physiology is a most important branch Of the biological division of the natural sciences. Besides making a large part of both botany and zoology, it is set apart as a science by itself, devoted to the discussion of the functions of living matter. The nature work of the lower school grades leads naturally and logically to physiology, for which it forms a necessary basis. The subject of human physiology is the most important part of the nature study of the schools. It introduces the pupil to the physical house in which he must abide while he lives in this world and, with hygiene, to the essential conditions of highest attainment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human Physiology: An Elementary Text-Book of Anatomy, Physiology, and Hygiene From a considerable experience with both very elementary and more advanced classes, the author has been led to certain con elusions in regard to the teaching of elementary physiology and hygiene. It is not proposed to enter here into a discussion of the correctness of these conclusions, but a brief statement of a few principles that seem fundamental may perhaps be allowable. The chief object of teaching physiology in the public schools is to train the pupils to keep their bodies in health. The mere teaching of anatomy and physiology will not accomplish this, for the pupil cannot master the structure and workings of the body in a way that will enable him to frame the laws of health and apply them. Neither can the desired end be reached by teach ing rules of health without an anatomical and physiological basis; for without such a basis, hygiene is an intangible and an elusive subject. The author has therefore concluded that a conservative middle course is wiser than either of the extremes of method mentioned above. An elementary text in physiology should be a balanced text, containing sufficient anatomy to make clear the broader outlines of the structure of the human body, enough physiology to make plain the great laws according to which the body lives, and a full discussion of how a violation of these laws may be avoided. For the introduction of certain new matter, as, for example, the cell idea, the work of enzymes, and matter relating to germ diseases, there is little need for explanation. The groundwork of physiology and pathology has in recent years so shifted and extended itself, that the subject-matter of an elementary course must to a considerable extent be altered if it is to furnish 3. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Book on Anatomy, Physiology, and Hygiene, for Grammar Schools and Families: With Eighty-Three Engravings To the teacher we would suggest the propriety of calling on a pupil of the class, to describe the anatomy of an organ from an anatomical outline plate; after wards call upon another to give the physiology of the part, while a third may state the hygiene; after which, the questions at the bottom of the page may be asked promiscuously, and thus the detailed know ledge which each pupil possesses of the subject will be tested. Book excerpt: A Treatise on Anatomy, Physiology, and Hygiene (Revised Edition) by Calvin Cutter Agesilaus, king of Sparta, when asked what things boys should learn, replied, "Those which they will practise when they become men." As health requires the observance of the laws inherent to the different organs of the human system, so not only boys, but girls, should acquire a knowledge of the laws of their organization. If sound morality depends upon the inculcation of correct principles in youth, equally so does a sound physical system depend on a correct physical education during the same period of life. If the teacher and parents who are deficient in moral feelings and sentiments, are unfit to communicate to children and youth those high moral principles demanded by the nature of man, so are they equally incompetent directors of the physical training of the youthful system, if ignorant of the organic laws and the physiological conditions upon which health and disease depend. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Human Body and Health: An Elementary d104-Book of Essential Anatomy, Applied Physiology, and Practical Hygiene for Schools The most noted of England's prime ministers said, The first duty of the statesman is, the health of the people. One of our own statesmen asserts that the greatest asset of this nation is the health of its citizens. Inasmuch as recent science has shown clearly the cause and prevention of many diseases, it is important that this knowledge should form a part of every individual's equipment for the duties of life. The greatest enemies of the human race are microbes, which annually lay prostrate in this country and Europe seventy million people, of whom three million die. The microbes feeding on human blood have caused the destruction of armies and the downfall of a nation. On this account a knowledge of these infinitely small forms of life is of vast importance. Since the foundation of many diseases is laid during child hood, and since new ideas are accepted most readily in youth, every boy and girl during school years should be carefully and thoroughly instructed as to the cause of human wretched ness and the means of preventing it. The numerous text books on elementary physiology have largely neglected the discussion of facts relating to public health. As a result not one in a hundred graduates of our public schools could state any evidence showing whether vaccination is beneficial or harmful, or describe how malaria, diphtheria, and yellow fever are acquired, and how they may be prevented. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Health Studies Applied Physiology and Hygiene Anatomy and physiology, except in their simple elements, are of doubtful value for young pupils. But the study of how to keep well, or hygiene, is something that every boy and girl, man and woman, must learn or else must suffer for his ignorance. Hygiene, properly presented. Deals with things of everyday life. No pupil in the schools is too young to begin to learn how to adjust himself successfully to his surroundings. This learning how to meet our environment, as Professor Huxley long ago said, constitutes a liberal education. Many of the school texts have been based too exclusively on physiology, or have dealt largely with elementary anatomy, and have been difficult of comprehension to the pupils. Health studies differs materially from such books. It makes hygiene the primary study, and introduces only a sufficient amount of physiology to form a sound basis for the study of health principles. If this small book succeeds in helping its readers to think for themselves; if it encourages them in making their own definitions; if it leads them to realize that it is not ignorance but knowledge which leads to health, and there fore happiness; and finally, if it helps to prepare them to meet practical life as they will find it, - then its appear ance will have been justified.
