Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yield, quality and physical characteristics of sorghum forage are influenced by the stage of maturity of the plants at the time of harvest. Forage harvested in the boot stage is high in moisture content (78 to 88 percent) and leaf percentage and higher in protein than forage from later stages of maturity. Forage harvested in the dough stages in lower in moisture content and higher in grain percentage than forage from earlier stages. Maximum dry matter production is reached by most varieties and hybrids by the milk to soft-dough stages. Harvesting in immature stages (preboot and boot) reduced dry matter production as much as 40 to 50 percent. An extra cutting may be obtained wich early-maturing tyes harvested in immature stages but total production is still reduced. Harvesting in the milk to soft-dough stages is suggested from these results at least until feeding results are availability as a basis for more critical determination of the net value of harvested sorghum forages.

Book excerpt: Sorghum is the most important cereal crop grown in the semi-arid tropics (SAT) of Africa, Asia, Australia and Americas for food, feed, fodder and fuel. It is the fifth most important cereal crop globally after rice, wheat, maize and barley, and plays a major role in global food security. Sorghum is consumed in different forms for various end-uses. Its grain is mostly used directly for food purposes. After the release of the proceedings of two international symposia in the form of books “Sorghum in Seventies” and “Sorghum in Eighties”, global sorghum research and development have not been documented at one place. Of course, few books on sorghum have been released that focus on specific issues/research areas, but comprehensive review of all aspects of recent development in different areas of sorghum science has not been compiled in the form a single book. This book is intended to fill in a void to bridge the gap by documenting all aspects of recent research and development in sorghum encompassing all the progress made, milestones achieved across globe in genetic diversity assessment, crop improvement and production, strategies for high yield, biotic and abiotic stress resistance, grain and stover quality aspects, storage, nutrition, health and industrial applications, biotechnological applications to increase production, including regional and global policy perspectives and developmental needs. This book will be an institutional effort to compile all the latest information generated in research and development in sorghum across the globe at one place.

Book excerpt: This study was made to determine the influence of maturity on certain chemical constituents of silage produced from various sorghum and corn varieties grown under the environmental conditions found in northeastern Colorado. Experimental materials consisted of common and hybrid forage sorghums, a sorghum-sudangrass hybrid, a grain sorghum hybrid, and a corn hybrid. The study was conducted at the U.S. Central Great Plains Field Station near Akron, Colorado, during 1963 and 1964. Plants were havested for silage at six stages of plant maturity that ranged from panicle or tassel-emergence to the hard-dough seed stage. In 1963 all varieties tested reached the hard-dough stage, but in 1964 none of the varieties reached this stage prior to the advent of a killing frost. Dry matter contents of green plant materials from sorghums and corn increased as plants were harvested as the more mature stages of growth. Sugar percentages increased in most sorghum of corn varieties until about the milk-stage of maturity, but most varieties exhibited declines at later stages. Silage pH (hydrogen-ion concentrations) increased as plants were harvested at the more mature stages. Total nitrogen percentages showed marked decreases with an advance in plant maturity. Differences were negligible in total nitrogen percentages between green plant material at time of harvest and that of silage. Phosphorus levels of silages from different varieties showed no definite trends relative to stage of maturity. Percentages of calcium, potassium, and magnesium in silages produced from sorghum or corn varieties generally declined with and advance in maturity. Carotene levels diminished with an advance in plant maturity in all varieties used in 1964 studies. The magnitude of the decline varied considerably between varieties. Marked differences in yield were observed in 1964 between varieties of sorghum on corn used in the study.

Book excerpt: Millets and sorghum are extremely important crops in many developing nations and because of the ability of many of them to thrive in low-moisture situations they represent some exciting opportunities for further development to address the continuing and increasing impact of global temperature increase on the sustainability of the world’s food crops. The main focus of this thorough new book is the potential for crop improvement through new and traditional methods, with the book’s main chapters covering the following crops: sorghum, pearl millet, finger millet, foxtail milet, proso millet, little millet, barnyard millet, kodo millet, tef and fonio. Further chapters cover pests and diseases, nutritional and industrial importance, novel tools for improvement, and seed systems in millets. Millets and Sorghum provides full and comprehensive coverage of these crucially important crops, their biology, world status and potential for improvement, and is an essential purchase for crop and plant scientists, and food scientists and technologists throughout the developed and developing world. All libraries in universities and research establishment where biological and agricultural sciences are studied and taught should have copies of this important book on their shelves.

Book excerpt: Sorghum is among the top five cereals and one of the key crops in global food security efforts. Sorghum is a resilient crop under high-stress environments, ensuring productivity and access to food when other crops fail. Scientists see the potential of sorghum as a main staple food in a future challenged by climate change. The contributors provide a comprehensive review of sorghum knowledge. The discussion covers genetic improvements, development of new hybrids, biotechnology, and physiological modifications. Production topics include water and nutrient management, rotations, and pest control. Final end uses, sorghum as a bioenergy crop, markets, and the future of sorghum are presented. IN PRESS!
