Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of The Surveying Handbook, although a ground breaker, was widely accepted. However, surveying is a dynamic profession with each new development just one step ahead of the next, and updating became critical. In addition, the editors received constructive criticism about the first edition that needed to be addressed. So, while the objective of The Handbook remains intact, the logical evolution of the profession, along with the need to recognize constructive criticism, led to the second edition. chapters have been added on water boundaries, boundary law, and geodetic positioning New satellites. The chapter on land data systems was rewritten to provide a dramatic updating of information, thus broadening the coverage of The Handbook. The same may be said for the state plane coordinate chapter. The material on public lands and construction surveying was reorganized as well. Appendices were added to tabulate some information that was buried in the earlier edition in several places. Numerous other changes were incorporated to help the handbook retain its profession-wide scope, one step beyond the scope of an upper-division college textbook. Along with the most sophisticated techniques and equipment, the reader can find information on techniques once popular and still important. Four new authors are welcomed to the list of contributors: Grenville Barnes, R. B. Buckner, Donald A. Wilson, and Charles D. Ghilani.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stadia Surveying: The Theory of Stadia Measurements, Accompanied by Tables of Horizontal Distances and Differences of Level for the Reduction of Stadia Field Observations The credit of having first introduced this method of measurement into this country would seem to be long to Mr. John B. Mayer, a French Swiss. It was used by him as early as 1850; and subsequently, during his connection with the United States Lake Survey, he did much towards perfecting the instruments and improving the methods of work. An essay by him in the Journal Min Institute for January, 1865, con tains a short historical sketch of the development of topographical surveying and a brief dissuade dime. General principles of Stadia measurements.length of a line subtending an angle at a distance d from its apex, and a' the length of line, parallel to and twice the length of a, subtending the same angle at a dis tance d' from its apex, then will d' equal 2d. This is, in a general way, the underly ing principle of stadia work; the nature of the instruments used, however, intro duces several modifications, and these will be best understood by a consideration of the conditions under which such measure ments are generally made.
