The workshop took place August 11 - 14, 1999, in Vancouver, Canada. The workshop alternates with the Scandinavian Workshop on Algorithms Theory (SWAT), continuing the tradition of SWAT and WADS starting with SWAT'88 and WADS'89. In response to the program committee's call for papers, 71 papers were submitted. From these submissions, the program committee selected 32 papers for presentation at the workshop. In addition to these submitted papers, the program committee invited the following researchers to give plenary lectures at the workshop: C. Leiserson, N. Magnenat-Thalmann, M. Snir, U. Vazarani, and 1. Vitter. On behalf of the program committee, we would like to express our appreciation to the six plenary lecturers who accepted our invitation to speak, to all the authors who submitted papers to W ADS'99, and to the Pacific Institute for Mathematical Sciences for their sponsorship. Finally, we would like to express our gratitude to all the people who reviewed papers at the request of the program committee. August 1999 F. Dehne A. Gupta J.-R. Sack R. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Fourth Workshop on Hybrid - stems: Computation and Control (HSCC 2001) held in Rome, Italy on March 28-30, 2001. The Workshop on Hybrid Systems attracts researchers from in- stry and academia interested in modeling, analysis, synthesis, and implemen- tion of dynamic and reactive systems involving both discrete (integer, logical, symbolic) and continuous behaviors. It is a forum for the discussion of the - test developments in all aspects of hybrid systems, including formal models and computational representations, algorithms and heuristics, computational tools, and new challenging applications. The Fourth HSCC International Workshop continues the series of workshops held in Grenoble, France (HART’97), Berkeley, California, USA (HSCC’98), N- megen, The Netherlands (HSCC’99), and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA (HSCC 2000). Proceedings of these workshops have been published in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series by Springer-Verlag. In line with the beautiful work that led to the design of the palace in which the workshop was held, Palazzo Lancellotti in Rome, resulting from the col- boration of many artists and architects of di erent backgrounds, the challenge faced by the hybrid system community is to harmonize and extract the best from two main research areas: computer science and control theory.

Originally AL was concerned with applying biologically inspired solutions to technology and with examining computational expertise in order to reproduce and understand life processes. Despite its short history, AL now is becoming a mature scientific field. The volume reports the state of the art in this exciting area of research; there are sections on foundations and epistemology, origins of life and evolution, adaptive and cognitive systems, artificial worlds, robotics and emulation of animal behavior, societies and collective behavior, biocomputing, and applications and common tools.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Second International Workshop on Hybrid Systems: Computation and Control (HSCC’99) to be held March 29- 31, 1999, in the village Berg en Dal near Nijmegen, The Netherlands. The rst workshop of this series was held in April 1998 at the University of California at Berkeley. The series follows meetings that were initiated by Anil Nerode at Cornell University. The proceedings of those meetings were published in the Springer-Verlag LNCS Series, Volumes 736, 999, 1066, 1201, and 1273. The p- ceedings of the rst workshop of the new series was published in LNCS 1386. The focus of the workshop is on modeling, control, synthesis, design, and ve- cation of hybrid systems. A hybrid system is a theoretical model for a computer controlled engineering system, with a dynamics that evolves both in a discrete state set and in a family of continuous state spaces. Research is motivated by, for example, control of electro-mechanical systems (robots), air tra c control, control of automated freeways, and chemical process control. The emerging - search area of hybrid systems overlaps both with computer science and with control theory. The interaction between researchers from these elds is expected to be fruitfull for the development of the area of hybrid systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book documents the scientific outcome of the Third International Workshop on Hybrid Systems, held in Ithaca, NY, USA, in October 1994. It presents a selection of carefully reviewed and revised full papers chosen from the workshop contribution and is the successor to LNCS 736, the seminal "Hybrid Systems" volume edited by Grossman, Nerode, Ravn, and Rischel. Hybrid systems are models for networks of digital and continuous devices, in which digital control programs sense and supervise continuous and discrete plants governed by differential or difference equations. The investigation of hybrid systems is creating a new and fascinating discipline bridging mathematics, computer science, and control engineering.
