Book excerpt: Abstract: Stable isotopic analysis of thirty-five samples from the alkaline Coryell Intrusive Suite (CIS) indicate that huge meteoric-hydrothermal systems affected these plutons during emplacement into the shallow crust near the end of Eocene extension in southeastern British Columbia. Significant lowering of [delta] 18O and [delta]D values and 18O/16O disequilibrium among mineral assemblages from the Arrow Lake, Renata, and Coryell plutons indicate that hydrothermal activity was intense and was active over a ~300,000 year duration. The absence of geographic trends in [delta] 18O and [delta]D values indicates that this hydrothermal system was pervasive over a large area (~3500 km2). Quartz [delta] 18O values suggest a lower crustal source for the CIS magmas. Melting was triggered by decompression of the lower crust, as it was unroofed during Eocene extension. The overlapping of amphibole and biotite [delta] 18O values from the CIS and Penticton Group Volcanics suggest a cogenetic relationship between these two units.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Stable isotope analysis of thirty-five samples from the Northwestern Coast Mountains indicates a complex fluid history related to terrane accretion, metamorphism, and magmatism. The greenschist to amphibolite facies metasedimentary rocks from the Western Metamorphic Belt have variable (sigma)D and (sigma) 18O values that appear to be in isotopic equilibrium with metamorphic fluids at low water-rock ratio conditions. Carbon isotope values indicate organic rich protoliths. Stable isotope values from the Coast Shear Zone indicate the involvement of both magmatic and meteoric-hydrothermal fluids during deformation, in contrast to meteoric-free fluid systems related to Au-mineralization along strike to the north (Goldfarb et al., 1988). The Coast Mountain Batholith and Central Gneiss Complex have homogeneous (sigma)D and (sigma) 18O values that indicate magmatic fluids at low water-rock ratio (Magaritz and Taylor, 1976). Further to the east, large amounts of meteoric-hydrothermal fluids circulated through a network of ductile-to-brittle normal faults (Andronicos et al., 2003; Heah, 1990).

Book excerpt: Stable and radiocarbon isotope measurements made on CO2 from high temperature hydrothermal vents on the Endeavour Segment of the Juan de Fuca Ridge indicate both magmatic and sedimentary sources of carbon to the hydrothermal system. The Endeavour segment is devoid of overlying sediments and has shown no observable signs of surficial magmatic activity during the ≈20 years of ongoing studies. The appearance of isotopically heavy, radiocarbon dead CO2 after a 1999 earthquake swarm requires that this earthquake event was magmatic in origin. Evidence for a sedimentary organic carbon source suggests the presence of buried sediments at the ridge axis. These findings, which represent the first temporally coherent set of radiocarbon measurements from hydrothermal vent fluids, demonstrate the utility of radiocarbon analysis in hydrothermal studies. The existence of a sediment source at Endeavour and the occurrence of magmatic episodes illustrate the extremely complex and evolving nature of the Endeavour hydrothermal system.

Book excerpt: Skarns in British Columbia have historically been important sources of iron, tungsten, copper, and gold. This publication begins with an introduction on skarn terminology and the problems of skarn identification. It then reviews a genetic model of skarn formation and presents descriptive profiles of eight types of skarn deposits; describes the database of at least 735 skarn occurrences in the province, and the number and distribution of skarns in British Columbia according to their associations, class, age, and distribution; and notes the ages of British Columbia skarns and the total production of various metals extracted from British Columbia skarns. Subsequent sections provide information on assays and metal ratios of mineralized skarns, skarn mineralogy, skarn mineral chemistry, chemistry of skarn-related intrusions, and the mapping and evaluation of skarns. The appendix contains a listing of 735 skarn occurrences in British Columbia, giving deposit name, MINFILE number, latitude/longitude, elements and minerals present, and associated rocks and their ages.

Book excerpt: Carbon-hydrogen-oxygen isotope compositions have been measured in regional cold waters, geothermal fluids, and hydrothermally altered rocks from the Roosevelt Hot Springs geothermal area. These data have been used, in conjunction with other geological and geochemical data from this geothermal system, to place some limits on the origin of geothermal fluids and reservoir carbon, the fluid recharge area, physical-chemical environment of hydrothermal alteration, and relative permeability of the geothermal system. The similarity of hydrogen isotope compositions of local meteoric water and geothermal reservoir fluid indicate that the geothermal fluids are virtually entirely of surface derivation. An isotopically reasonable source area would be the Mineral Mountains directly to the east of the Roosevelt system. Hydrothermal calcite appears to be in isotopic equilibrium with the deep reservoir fluid. The deltaC/sup 13/ values of deep calcites and T- pH-f0/sub 2/ conditions of the reservoir defined by measured temperature, fluid chemistry, and alteration mineralogy fix the delta/sup 13/C value of the geothermal system to -5 to -6.5% (PDB). These values do not unambiguously define any one source or process, however. There is a relatively small increase in /sup 18/O of geothermal fluids relative to their cold surface water precursors and significant /sup 18/O depletion accompanying hydrothermal alteration of the granitic host rock. These isotopic shifts indicate a high ratio of geothermal fluid to altered rock for the geothermal system, implying relatively rapid (geologically) recirculation rates and significant permeability of the geothermal system.

Book excerpt: Whole-rock oxygen isotopic compositions of Late Mesozoic graywacke, the dominant host rock at The Geysers, record evidence of a large liquid-dominated hydrothermal system that extended beyond the limits of the present steam reservoir. The graywackes show vertical and lateral isotopic variations that resulted from gradients in temperature, permeability, and fluid composition during this early liquid-dominated system. All of these effects are interpreted to have resulted from the emplacement of the granitic "felsite" intrusion 1-2 million years ago. The [delta]18O values of the graywacke are strongly zoned around a northwest-southeast trending low located near the center of and similar in shape to the present steam system. Vertical isotopic gradients show a close relationship to the felsite intrusion. The [delta]18O values of the graywacke decrease from approximately 15 per mil near the surface to 4-7 per mil 300 to 600 m above the intrusive contact. The [delta]18O values then increase downward to 8-10 per mil at the felsite contact, thereafter remaining nearly constant within the intrusion itself. The large downward decrease in [delta]18O values are interpreted to be controlled by variations in temperature during the intrusive event, ranging from 150°C near the surface to about 425°C near the intrusive contact. The upswing in [delta]18O values near the intrusive contact appears to have been caused by lower rock permeability and/or heavier fluid isotopic composition there. Lateral variations in the isotopic distributions suggests that the effects of temperature were further modified by variations in rock permeability and/or fluid-isotopic composition. Time-integrated water:rock ratios are thought to have been highest within the central isotopic low where the greatest isotopic depletions are observed. We suggest that this region of the field was an area of high permeability within the main upflow zone of the liquid-dominated hydrothermal system. The lowest water:rock ratios and permeabilities are found in the Northwest Geysers where the least depleted rocks occur.
