Book Synopsis Lectures On Dynamical Systems, Structural Stability And Their Applications by : Kotik K Lee
Download or read book Lectures On Dynamical Systems, Structural Stability And Their Applications written by Kotik K Lee and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1992-05-14 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The communication of knowledge on nonlinear dynamical systems, between the mathematicians working on the analytic approach and the scientists working mostly on the applications and numerical simulations has been less than ideal. This volume hopes to bridge the gap between books written on the subject by mathematicians and those written by scientists. The second objective of this volume is to draw attention to the need for cross-fertilization of knowledge between the physical and biological scientists. The third aim is to provide the reader with a personal guide on the study of global nonlinear dynamical systems.
Book Synopsis The Periodic Unfolding Method by : Doina Cioranescu
Download or read book The Periodic Unfolding Method written by Doina Cioranescu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-03 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book on the subject of the periodic unfolding method (originally called "éclatement périodique" in French), which was originally developed to clarify and simplify many questions arising in the homogenization of PDE's. It has since led to the solution of some open problems. Written by the three mathematicians who developed the method, the book presents both the theory as well as numerous examples of applications for partial differential problems with rapidly oscillating coefficients: in fixed domains (Part I), in periodically perforated domains (Part II), and in domains with small holes generating a strange term (Part IV). The method applies to the case of multiple microscopic scales (with finitely many distinct scales) which is connected to partial unfolding (also useful for evolution problems). This is discussed in the framework of oscillating boundaries (Part III). A detailed example of its application to linear elasticity is presented in the case of thin elastic plates (Part V). Lastly, a complete determination of correctors for the model problem in Part I is obtained (Part VI). This book can be used as a graduate textbook to introduce the theory of homogenization of partial differential problems, and is also a must for researchers interested in this field.

Download or read book Market Demand written by W. Trockel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present monograph is a synthesis of what has been contributed during the last decade to the analysis of market demand in large econ omies where consumers may have non-convex preference relations. Al though research in this field has not yet come to an end there exists a variety of interesting results, established in different frameworks by means of different conceptual and formal tools. a It is my aim to give comprehensive treatment of the existing lit erature including my own contributions. In working out differences and interrelations of the various ap proaches I adopted and modified several of the original results. My desire to present the problem and the methods by which it has been treated in such a way, that also non-specialists can follow, con flicted sometimes with the inevitable complexity of tools to be used. Therefore, I decided to give enough room to the introductory and prepa ratory part of this work. This part consists of the introduction and of the first four chapters. The main part of the present analysis consists of chapters 5 to 7.

Book Synopsis Stability and Stabilization of Enzymes by : W.J.J. van den Tweel
Download or read book Stability and Stabilization of Enzymes written by W.J.J. van den Tweel and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings contain most of the oral presentations and posters of the international symposium on Stability and Stabilization of Enzymes held in Maastricht in November 1992. They provide a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art in this field. The possible applications of enzymes are enormous. Years of development have seen many enzymes brought onto the market, but they are still expensive to use. Therefore, their efficient application is a prerequisite for common usage. One of the main factors for this efficiency is the stability of the enzymes. The topics thus ranged from the extensive fundamental thermodynamic knowledge gathered in academic research to the practical applied knowledge built up in industry during the time that enzymes have been produced commercially. The subject Stability and Stabilization of Enzymes was discussed from various points of view, as was reflected in the themes of the symposium sessions. In the session on Fundamentals of Enzyme Stabilisation the thermodynamic background of the phenomenon was highlighted. In yet another session, the recently developed analytical tools to measure enzyme stability and stabilisation were discussed. Further sessions comprised the physical, chemical and biological ways to obtain enzyme stabilisation and finally, the industrial practice of enzyme stabilisation was treated by representatives of the world's most important enzyme producers. The book will be of interest to researchers in universities and industry in the fields of biochemistry, enzymology and biotechnology.
Book Synopsis Singularity Theory and an Introduction to Catastrophe Theory by : Y.-C. Lu
Download or read book Singularity Theory and an Introduction to Catastrophe Theory written by Y.-C. Lu and published by Springer. This book was released on 1976 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In April, 1975, I organised a conference at the Battelle Research Center, Seattle, Washington on the theme "Structural stability, catastrophe theory and their applications in the sciences". To this conference were invited a number of mathematicians concerned with the mathematical theories of structural stability and catastrophe theory, and other mathematicians whose principal interest lay in applications to various sciences - physical, biological, medical and social. Rene Thorn and Christopher Zeeman figured in the list of distinguished participants. The conference aroused considerable interest, and many mathematicians who were not specialists in the fields covered by the conference expressed their desire to attend the conference sessions; in addition, scientists from the Battelle laboratories came to Seattle to learn of developments in these areas and to consider possible applications to their own work. In view of the attendance of these mathematicians and scientists, and in order to enable the expositions of the experts to be intelligible to this wider audience, I invited Professor YungƯ Chen Lu, of Ohio State University, to come to Battelle Seattle in advance of the actual conference to deliver a series of informal lecture-seminars, explaining the background of the mathematical theory and indicating some of the actual and possible applications. In the event, Yung-Chen Lu delivered his lectures in the week preceding and the week following the actual conference, so that the first half of his course was preparatory and the second half explanatory and evaluative. These lecture notes constitute an expanded version of the course

Book Synopsis Bursting: The Genesis Of Rhythm In The Nervous System by : Steve Coombes
Download or read book Bursting: The Genesis Of Rhythm In The Nervous System written by Steve Coombes and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2005-10-03 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neurons in the brain communicate with each other by transmitting sequences of electrical spikes or action potentials. One of the major challenges in neuroscience is to understand the basic physiological mechanisms underlying the complex spatiotemporal patterns of spiking activity observed during normal brain functioning, and to determine the origins of pathological dynamical states such as epileptic seizures and Parkinsonian tremors. A second major challenge is to understand how the patterns of spiking activity provide a substrate for the encoding and transmission of information, that is, how do neurons compute with spikes? It is likely that an important element of both the dynamical and computational properties of neurons is that they can exhibit bursting, which is a relatively slow rhythmic alternation between an active phase of rapid spiking and a quiescent phase without spiking. This book provides a detailed overview of the current state-of-the-art in the mathematical and computational modeling of bursting, with contributions from many of the leading researchers in the field.

Book Synopsis Nonlinear Dynamical Economics and Chaotic Motion by : Hans-Walter Lorenz
Download or read book Nonlinear Dynamical Economics and Chaotic Motion written by Hans-Walter Lorenz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Usually, the first edition of a book still contains a multiplicity of typographic, con ceptional, and computational errors even if one believes the opposite at the time of publication. As this book did not represent a counterexample to this rule, the current second edition offers a chance to remove at least the known shortcomings. The book has been partly re-organized. The previously rather long Chapter 4 has been split into two separate chapters dealing with discrete-time and continuous time approaches to nonlinear economic dynamics. The short summary of basic properties of linear dynamical systems has been banned to an appendix because the line of thought in the chapter seems to have been unnecessarily interrupted by these technical details and because the book concentrates on nonlinear systems. This appendix, which mainly deals with special formal properties of dynamical sys tems, also contains some new material on invariant subspaces and center-manifold reductions. A brief introduction into the theory of lags and operators is followed by a few remarks on the relation between the 'true' properties of dynamical systems and their behavior observable in numerical experiments. Additional changes in the main part of the book include a re-consideration of Popper's determinism vs. inde terminism discussion in the light of chaotic properties of deterministic, nonlinear systems in Chapter 1. An investigation of a simultaneous price-quantity adjustment process, a more detailed inquiry into the uniqueness property of limit cycles, and a short presentation of relaxation oscillations are included in Chapter 2.

Download or read book Comprehensive Chirality written by and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2012-12-31 with total page 5635 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although many books exist on the subject of chiral chemistry, they only briefly cover chiral synthesis and analysis as a minor part of a larger work, to date there are none that pull together the background information and latest advances in one comprehensive reference work. Comprehensive Chirality provides a complete overview of the field, and includes chiral research relevant to synthesis, analytic chemistry, catalysis, and pharmaceuticals. The individual chapters in each of the 9 volumes provide an in depth review and collection of references on definition, technology, applications and a guide/links to the related literature. Whether in an Academic or Corporate setting, these chapters will form an invaluable resource for advanced students/researchers new to an area and those who need further background or answers to a particular problem, particularly in the development of drugs. Chirality research today is a central theme in chemistry and biology and is growing in importance across a number of disciplinary boundaries. These studies do not always share a unique identifying factor or subject themselves to clear and concise definitions. This work unites the different areas of research and allows anyone working or researching in chiral chemistry to navigate through the most essential concepts with ease, saving them time and vastly improving their understanding. The field of chirality counts several journals that are directly and indirectly concerned with the field. There is no reference work that encompasses the entire field and unites the different areas of research through deep foundational reviews. Comprehensive Chirality fills this vacuum, and can be considered the definitive work. It will help users apply context to the diverse journal literature offering and aid them in identifying areas for further research and/or for solving problems. Chief Editors, Hisashi Yamamoto (University of Chicago) and Erick Carreira (ETH Zürich) have assembled an impressive, world-class team of Volume Editors and Contributing Authors. Each chapter has been painstakingly reviewed and checked for consistent high quality. The result is an authoritative overview which ties the literature together and provides the user with a reliable background information and citation resource.
