The method consist of (I) collection and analysis of the geological date demarcate the probable failure planes controlled by the various discontinuity surfaces, (ii) calculation of the normal and shear forces acting on the failure planes, and (iii) the evaluation of the shearing resistance from the laboratory or the field tests. An example of calculation of factor of safety in a quartrite rock slope has been given.
Book Synopsis Stability Assessment for Underground Excavations and Key Construction Techniques by : Hanhua Zhu
Download or read book Stability Assessment for Underground Excavations and Key Construction Techniques written by Hanhua Zhu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how the state of underground structures can be determined with the assistance of force, deformation and energy. It then analyzes mechanized shield methods, the New Austrian tunneling method (NATM) and conventional methods from this new perspective. The book gathers a wealth of cases reflecting the experiences of practitioners and administrators alike. Based on statistical and engineering studies of these cases, as well as lab and field experiments, it develops a stability assessment approach incorporating a stable equilibrium, which enables engineers to keep the structure and surrounding rocks safe as long as the stable equilibrium and deformation compliance are maintained. The book illustrates the implementation of the method in various tunneling contexts, including soil-rock mixed strata, tunneling beneath operating roads, underwater tunnels, and tunnel pit excavation. It offers a valuable guide for researchers, designers and engineers, especially those who are seeking to understand the underlying principles of underground excavation.

Book Synopsis Rock Mass Stability Around Underground Excavations in a Mine by : Yan Xing
Download or read book Rock Mass Stability Around Underground Excavations in a Mine written by Yan Xing and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-11-20 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stability of underground excavations is of great importance to an operating mine because it ensures the safety of the working people and operating equipment, and successful ore production. Due to the complex geological conditions and mine constructions, and variability and uncertainty in estimating rock mass mechanical properties, the assessment of rock mass stability for an underground mine is extremely challenging and difficult. Tackling of this difficult problem is not covered in detail in any of the textbooks currently available in the rock mechanics literature. This monograph aims to cover this gap in the rock mechanics and rock engineering field. This monograph provides detailed procedures for the stability assessment and support design for an underground mine case study. It covers the background of the mine site including the monitored deformation data, the state-of-art methodologies for the stability analysis of rock masses around underground excavations, performed laboratory tests, estimation of the rock mass properties, a brief theory and background of the 3-D Distinct Element Code (3DEC), and numerical modeling of underground rock mass stability including investigation of the effectiveness of rock supports. The monograph is an excellent reference for the senior undergraduates, graduate students, researchers and practitioners who work in the Underground Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering area in the Mining Engineering, Civil Geotechnical Engineering and DEM (Distinct Element Method) Numerical modeling.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is aimed at the practising engineer and engineering geologist working in tropical environments, where lands lides are mainly triggered by rain fall. This book is based on a similar work published in 1999 in Portuguese, which became the Rio de Janeiro Slope Manual. This book is an engineering guide for the design of slopes and stabilisation works in rocks and residual soils. It evolves from the cumulative experience gathered by several engineers and geologists who faced severe slope problems. The authors' experience throughout Central and South America (Costa Rica, Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador and Venezuela) and the Far East, especially Hong Kong and Malaysia, was used as a foundation for writing this book. The work also benefits enormously from the time spent in Hong Kong in 1996 and 1997 by the first editor on sabbatical at the City University of Hong Kong, and the discussions he had with many colleagues from the Geotechnical Engineering Office (GEO) of the Hong Kong Government, especially Dr. A. Malone, Mr. w.K. Pun, Dr. A. Li, Mr. K. Ho, and Mr. y.c. Chan among others.

Book Synopsis Rock Slope Engineering by : Duncan C. Wyllie
Download or read book Rock Slope Engineering written by Duncan C. Wyllie and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2004-08-26 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stability of rock slopes is an important issue in both civil and mining engineering. On civil projects, rock cuts must be safe from rock falls and large-scale slope instability during both construction and operation. In open pit mining, where slope heights can be many hundreds of meters, the economics of the operation are closely related to the steepest stable slope angle that can be mined. This extensively updated version of the classic text, Rock Slope Engineering by Hoek and Bray, deals comprehensively with the investigation, design and operation of rock slopes. Investigation methods include the collection and interpretation of geological and groundwater data, and determination of rock strength properties, including the Hoek Brown rock mass strength criterion. Slope design methods include the theoretical basis for the design of plane, wedge, circular and toppling failures, and design charts are provided to enable rapid checks of stability to be carried out. New material contained in this book includes the latest developments in earthquake engineering related to slope stability, probabilistic analysis, numerical analysis, blasting, slope movement monitoring and stabilization methods. The types of stabilization include rock anchors, shotcrete, drainage and scaling, as well as rock fall protecting methods involving barriers, ditches, nets and sheds. Rock Slopes: Civil and Mining Engineering contains both worked examples illustrating data interpretation and design methods, and chapters on civil and mining case studies. The case studies demonstrate the application of design methods to the construction of stable slopes in a wide variety of geological conditions. The book provides over 300 carefully selected references for those who wish to study the subject in greater detail. It also includes an introduction by Dr. Evert Hoek.

Book Synopsis Support of Underground Excavations in Hard Rock by : E. Hoek
Download or read book Support of Underground Excavations in Hard Rock written by E. Hoek and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The safe and economical construction of tunnels, mines, and other subterranean works depends on the correct choice of support systems to ensure that the excavations are stable. These support systems should be matched to the characterstics of the rock mass and the excavation techniques adopted. Establishing the support requirements, designing support systems and installing these correctly are essential elements in safe underground construction. This is a comprehensive and practical work which also gives access to user-friendly computer programmes which enable the investigation and design of support techniques. Details on how to obtain this software are also included in the book.
