Book excerpt: Cura animarum was once used to describe the role of priests: to care for souls, not bodies. This ensured that priests would ignore the external characteristics of the person they were serving. Today, ordained priests are assisted in most parishes by deacons and laity. Therefore, friar brothers and priests see their places in the church as ministers who save souls and share stories of Jesus, themselves, and of the people they minister. With the intent of preserving a record of institutional structures that have shaped the lives of the friars of the Province of the Sacred Heart, Father Joseph Zimmerman reflects on a time when the province had over seven hundred members while vividly describing the parishes and other ministries carried out by its friar brothers and priests over the past one hundred and sixty years. This resource is shared for those wishing to study developments in a group of vowed religious men as they moved from flourishing roles in immigrant US Catholicism to respond to changes in the Catholic Church and the wider society during the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Cura Animarum details how Franciscan friars from Germany shaped Catholicism in the United States and responded to cultural trends in the late twentieth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The creation of the Museum of the Friars Minor Capuchin of the Roman Province is designed to highlight the spirituality of a religious order whose cornerstones are intense mysticism, a simple and sober way of life, constant involvement with people, and a strong but gentle spirit of brotherly love. The eight rooms of the museum set up inside the friary host a series of sections devoted to its origins and history as well as the life of those who joined the order and drew inspiration from the example of extraordinary Capuchin saints like Felix of Cantalice, Crispin of Viterbo and Joseph of Leonessa but also contemporary figures known to the public on a vast scale, such as St Pio of Pietrelcina, who bore the stigmata for fifty years, and Father Mariano of Turin, the first multimedia preacher. The museum is also a new repository for the artistic and historical legacy of the Capuchins of Rome and the region of Lazio, as its rooms are in fact designed not only to house and exhibit the various items but also to ensure their preservation. To this end, the opening of the museum was preceded by major work to restore the original splendour not only of various kinds of artworks, books and documents but also and above all Capuchin liturgical vessels and articles of everyday use epitomizing the spirit of humble self-sufficiency that is the hallmark of the order. Encapsulating the extraordinarily rich experience of nearly 500 years of Capuchin life, this museum is concerned not only with preserving the past but also with projecting itself into the future as a sort of ongoing laboratory of initiatives, a venue for exhibitions, cultural events and spiritual experiences aimed at establishing dialogue and asserting the continuing primacy of the human dimension today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late Middle Ages provide us with a fascinating religious landscape. The quest for new religious ideals and intense spirituality can be observed in movements such as the Modern Devotion and the Franciscan Observance, marking the late fourteenth and fifteenth century with new institutional dynamics and the formation of a variety of religious communities. The dissemination of these new religious ideas and ideals profited from the advent of the printing press. It is these subjects that Koen Goudriaan, professor of Medieval History at VU University Amsterdam, has studied for decades. This volume, edited by Anna Dlabačová and Ad Tervoort, presents a collection of eleven of his best essays. It focuses on three themes: the institutional parameters of late medieval religious movements, the cult of remembrance, and the interaction between religious movements and the early printing press. Together, these essays provide a representative sample of Goudriaan’s substantial contribution to scholarship on late medieval history.
