Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commentary on St. Paul's: Epistle to the Galatians This historic light on St. Paul and his surroundings, supported as it is by the united testimony of the writers of the early Church, affords evidence which in all ages has assured all students, even those who have doubted the authorship of other Epistles attributed to him, that at least these four Epistles are from the pen of the Great Apostle. This certainty of authorship gives to these Epistles a special value, even amid the other Epistles bearing St. Paul's name and to those who confidently accept them all as genuine. In harmony with this mutual relation of the Epistles, the three volumes in which I have annotated them form one com plete work. I have endeavoured, by tracing the line of thought of these Epistles and by comparing them each with the others and with the Book of Acts, to reproduce the thought andthe movements and surroundings of the Apostle of the Gentiles at the noonday of his career. This reproduction I hope to supplement by another volume expounding the profound Epistles written during the seclusion of his first long imprisonment, viz. Those to the Ephesians, Philippians, Colos sians, and Philemon: by a fifth volume comprising both his two earliest and his three latest extant Epistles, viz. Those written during his second missionary tour, to the newly-founded Church at Thessalonica, and those written, as I hope to prove, after his release from his first imprisonment and to conclude the series by a volume expounding St. Paul's teaching as a whole, com paring it with that of the other writers of the New Testament, and tracing the manifold teaching of these various writers to its one immediate source in the Gospel proclaimed by Christ and to its ultimate source in the Eternal Purpose of God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentary on Saint Paul's Epistle: The Galatians Wicklifi'e, Huss, Jerome of Prague, and others, had laid the seeds of the Reformation, which Luther nourished with great warmth. The scandalous extolling of indulgences gave the first occasion to all the contradiction that followed between Luther and the church of Rome; in which, if the corruptions and cruelty of the clergy had not been so visible and scandalous, so small a matter could not have produced such a revolution: but any crisis will put ill humours into a ferment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Other Gospels: Or Lectures on St. Paul's Epistle to the Galatians The differences which divide Catholics from those who still profess Christianity, yet remain outside the Catholic Church, are far from superficial. They have their roots in a fundamental differ ence which lies deeper down than is generally supposed. That difference is as to the Messianic or Apos tolic character and office of the Incarnate Word. Catholics and those who, while claiming the name of Christian, are not Catholics, are at issue not only as to the past aspect of the temporal mission of the Son of God, but also as to the nature of His present work on earth, and as to the mode of His present influence on the souls of men. Agreement on this fundamental issue would by the grace of God, speedily result in agreement with regard to those points of difference which lie upon the surface and more readily strike the eye. The difference is commonly supposed to con cern principally the constitution of the Christian Church, as it is the mystical Body of Christ. The writer believes that it rather concerns, and con cerns primarily, Christ Himself, as He is the Head of that Body. This conviction has led him to publish the fol lowing considerations in the hope that, in these days of inquiry and of doubt, they may aid men of good-will' on their way towards the possession of that 'peace of believing' which springs from the obedience of faith.' The lectures have in substance been delivered in the churches of the Society at Edinburgh and at Oxford. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Paul's Epistle to the Philippians: A Revised d104, With Introduction, Notes, and Dissertations The present volume is a second instalment of the commentary on St Paul's Epistles, of which I sketched a plan in the preface to my edition of the Galatians. At the same time it is in tended, like its predecessor, to be complete in itself; so that the plan, as a whole, may be interrupted at any time without detriment to the parts. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Paul's Epistle to the Galatians: With a Critical and Grammatical Commentary, and a Revised Translation The latter portions of my work have been based on these somewhat remodelled principles, and - if I may trust the opinions of perhaps too partial and friendly judges - so far successfully, that I shall apparently be wise to keep them as the sort of standard to which, if God mercifully grant me life and strength, former portions of the series (wherever they seem to need it) may be brought up, and future portions conformed. The present edition then is an effort to make my earliest and decidedly most incomplete work as much as possible resemble those which apparently have some greater measures of maturity and completeness. It has involved, and I do not seek to disguise it, very great labour - labour perhaps not very much less than writing a new commentary. For though the notes remain substantially what they were before, and though I have found no reason to retract former opinions except in about four or five debateable and contested passages, I have still found that the interpolation of new matter and the introduction of exegetical comments have obliged me in many cases to alter the arrangement of the whole note, and occasionally even to face the weary and irksome task of total re-writing and reconstruction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Galatians And yet, if we allow ourselves to reflect upon the matter, we must see that to acquiesce in such a conclusion would be unsatisfactory, and even worse. Whatever we may think or feel, the fact remains that the deeper consciousness of early Christianity did recognise in this Epistle to the Galatians the signs of an inspired work, and that the Catholic Church has from the first given to it unhesitatingly a place amongst those of its writings which are not to pass away. Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Paul's Fight for Galatia In the present English edition I have done all in my power to treat my subject in a lucid, readable and unscholastic way, so far as this could be attained without disturbing the original plan of the book. A knowledge of Greek is nowhere presupposed, although it will be a great advantage to those who possess it. Technical terms have been almost entirely omitted, and the same is true of abbreviations. I should be particularly glad if this little volume proved interesting and serviceable to the ordinary Bible-reader and the average Bible-class member. In their interests, experience shows the necessity of explaining, with apologies to the scholarly, the only abbreviations which are liable to puzzle them, viz., that ff. after the number of a verse or page means "and the following verses" (or pages), and that a or b after the number of a verse or page indicates respectively the first or second half of that verse or page. Wherever possible, references have been given to English translations, not to the original foreign works.
