Book Synopsis Faith and Action by : Roger Antonio Fortin
Download or read book Faith and Action written by Roger Antonio Fortin and published by Ohio State University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Based on extensive primary archival materials, Faith and Action is a comprehensive history of the Catholic Archdiocese of Cincinnati over the past 175 years. Fortin paints a picture of the Catholic Church's involvement in the city's development and contextualizes the changing values and programs of the Church in the region. He characterizes the institution's history as one of both faith and action. From the time of its founding to the present, the way Catholics in the archdiocese of Cincinnati have viewed their relationship with the rest of society has changed with each major change in society. In the beginning, while espousing separation of church and state and religious liberty, they wanted the Church to adapt to the new American situation. In the mid-nineteenth century Cincinnati Catholics dealt with a dominant Protestant culture and, at times, a hostile environment, whereas a century later it had become much more a part of the American mainstream. Throughout most of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries most Catholics saw themselves as outsiders. During the past fifty years, however, Cincinnati Catholics, like most of their counterparts in the United States, have felt more confident and viewed themselves as very much a part of American society"--Publisher's description
Book Synopsis Visions of the Press in Britain, 1850-1950 by : Mark Hampton
Download or read book Visions of the Press in Britain, 1850-1950 written by Mark Hampton and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians recognize the cultural centrality of the newspaper press in Britain, yet very little has been published regarding competing conceptions of the press and its proper role in British society. In Visions of the Press in Britain, 1850-1950, Mark Hampton surveys a diversity of sources--Parliamentary speeches and commissions, books, pamphlets, periodicals and select private correspondence--in order to identify how governmental elites, the educated public, professional journalists, and industry moguls characterized the political and cultural function of the press. Hampton demonstrates that British theories of the press were intimately tied to definitions of the public and the emergence of mass democracy in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Book Synopsis Soccer's Missing Men by : J.A. Mangan
Download or read book Soccer's Missing Men written by J.A. Mangan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now unknown or forgotten, influential schoolmasters took the game of association football to many parts of England. They had several roles: they brought the game to individual schools, they established regional and national leagues and associations, and they founded professional football clubs. They also exported the game around the world, working as moral missionaries, passionate players and energetic entrepreneurs. The role of teachers in association football is a much neglected aspect of English cultural history. It is a story that deserves to be told because it allows a fundamental reappraisal of the status and position of these teachers in late nineteenth century and early twentieth century society. This volume was previously published as a special issue of the journal Soccer and Society.

Book Synopsis A History of Women's Lives in Coventry by : Cathy Hunt
Download or read book A History of Women's Lives in Coventry written by Cathy Hunt and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2018-08-30 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cathy Hunt examines the lives of Coventry women throughout one extraordinary century of change. The result of her detailed research is a book packed with stories of what it was like to be a woman between 1850 and 1950.During these years, women broke through barriers so that future generations of women might experience greater freedoms than had ever been possible for their mothers. Others offered their time and exceptional talents for the good of the community. The main focus of this engaging study is on the too often neglected details of womens daily lives, of triumphs and tragedies, changes and continuities, loves and losses. What was it like to grow up in Coventry, to go to its schools, to work in its offices, shops and factories? What were womens experiences of getting married, setting up home and raising children? How did women spend their scarce and precious leisure time?In other words, this is a book about the business of being a woman in this distinctive English Midlands city.
