Book Synopsis St. Luke's Life of Christ by : J. B. Phillips

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Contributor(s): John Bertram Phillips (1906-1982) was a Bible translator, writer, and clergyman. His work translating the New Testament made him one of Britain's most famous Bible communicators. He talked of the revelation received as he translated the New Testament, describing it as ""extraordinarily alive""--unlike any experience he had had with non-scriptural ancient texts. He referred to Scripture speaking to his condition in an ""uncanny way."" Phillips was a masterful apologist and defender of the Christian faith. He upheld the basic tenets of the faith, and was able to present them as fresh to the modern reader and hearer, much as he had done with his translation of the New Testament.
Book Synopsis A Presbyterian Bibliography by : Harold B. Prince
Download or read book A Presbyterian Bibliography written by Harold B. Prince and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 1983 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Librarians, historians, researchers, students, and others interested in examining the literary production of Southern Presbyterian ministers and works written about them will find A Presbyterian Bibliography invaluable. A 4,187-entry listing of extant published writings of ministers ordained by or received into the Presbyterian Church in the United States in its first hundred years, 1861-1961, this bibliography lists works by and about PCUS ministers and gives locations of all editions found in eight significant theological collections in the U.S.A. Presbyterian seminary libraries are those of Austin, Columbia, Louisville, Princeton, Reformed, and Union (Virginia); included also are the libraries of the Historical Foundation of the Presbyterian and Reformed Churches and the Presbyterian Historical Society. An examination of this listing of published (i.e., printed) books, parts of books, pamphlets, and periodical article repreints shows that PCUS ministers became authors, editors, translators, poets, dramatists, composers, and essayists who wrote sermons, polemics, commentaries, Bible studies, theologies, histories, and letters to Presidents. Content notes and annotations for many books indicate individual minister contributions. A subject index, and indexes leading to every listing of a minister's name and to the main entries of the other presons gives access to the Bibliography.

Harrington. What truly sets this book apart is the way in which Harrington effectively bridges the gap between modern biblical scholarship and Christian spirituality. Excerpt: ...evil men then living on earth, or, as it would seem, above all the wicked souls which from the beginning of the world had cursed it by their lives, he thought of himself as the chief. Yet he was but a Jew, with only the Old Testament to enlighten his conscience and touch his heart He knew about the personal spirit of evil, the enemy of God and of his own soul, and he knew that he had consented to the temptation of the adversary in the very presence of his Maker and his Lord. But a Christian understands much more than this concerning the malice of sin. He knows that his offences were so many blows at the love of God which had come in the Person of Jesus Christ to seek him out and to save him. Our Lord may justly complain of each one of us: "Mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of My Bread, hath lifted up his heel against Me." Not for our condemnation, however, does He by the lips of the psalmist speak this tender reproach. He desires to awaken in us life-long penitence, that so He may insure our eternal salvation. This thought has been quite wonderfully expressed for us by a modern poet: "Once, staggering blindly on the brink of hell, Above the everlasting fire-flood's awful roar, God threw His heart before my feet, And, stumbling o'er that obstacle divine, I into Heaven fell." But St Luke has something still more wonderful to tell us about habitual penitence. He relates that when our Lord rode into Jerusalem on the first Palm Sunday, the multitude cried out: "Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest" Through the Messiah, man is reconciled to God, and this brings to Heaven itself greater glory and a deeper peace. Shall I not, then, ...

Book Synopsis Jesus, the Image of Humanity by : Anselm Grn
Download or read book Jesus, the Image of Humanity written by Anselm Grn and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I want to connect what concerns people today with what it was about Jesus that fascinated Luke, as a man of his lifetime... I want every reader to be guided by Luke to Jesus, to gain new insights into Jesus, and to discover in him the one who gives meaning to our existence, heals our wounds and leads us to true life." -Anslem Grun In Jesus: the Image of Humanity, best selling author Anslem Grun writes an introduction to the Gospel of Luke that will inspire those who find it difficult to encounter the real Jesus in the writings of the New Testament. He shows the Jesus of Luke's Gospel to be the key to a spiritually fruitful life, something many Biblical exegetes fail to do. Grun's concern is to interpret the text in terms of the needs and longings of contemporary Christians. He pierces through alienating and inherited impressions of the text to show that what Luke is giving us is a record of his own experience of Jesus. He sees the Gospel as an expertly composed, entertaining and valuable piece of publicity on behalf of the Jesus movement; and its message is as life changing in the twenty-first century as it was in the first century."
Book Synopsis The Pen and the Scalpel by : William Collins
Download or read book The Pen and the Scalpel written by William Collins and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did Jesus come to save only the Jews? That was the question that Luke is determined to answera "and answer it, he will! Luke, a local physician and beloved townsman, is drawn into the growing movement of first century Christians in Antioch by an unpleasant first encounter with a disagreeable and xenophobic Saul of Tarsus. Through a childhood friend, Luke learned the news of what had happened to a young rabbi from Nazareth, thus becoming the catalyst for Luke's journey of faith. After completing his medical education at the Alexandrian School of Medicine, Luke's second encounter with Saul, now calling himself Paul, will change his life forever. As physician to the Apostle who is called by the Lord to take the Gospel to the Gentiles, Luke begins to discover the answer to his troubling question, 'Did Jesus die only for the Jews?' Encouraged by Jesus's mother to write down Jesus's story, Luke journeys with the missionaries to the cities of Asia Minor and then Greece itself. It is the martyrdom of his old friend that convinces Luke that the Lord was calling him to take his place. With his son now studying in Alexandria like his father before him, Luke carries the good news into the one province Paul had not been able to go, and settles down in the town of Bithniya as physician and bishop, where his faith will be put to the ultimate test. The Pen and the Scalpel tells the story of one of the most prolific writers of the New Testament. In this unforgettable journey, author William Collins reveals Luke's passion and determination to journey with Paul and ultimately discover the truth of Jesus's teachings."
