But, it still takes another twenty years and the building of a mammoth two-spired church before the humble Catholic mission becomes Saint Joseph Parish of Manteno. In 1898, the landmark church burns to the ground. Thanks to large community efforts, a brick church with a towering steeple rises from the ashes and not too long after, Our Lady Academy and boarding school, led by the Parisian-established Sisters of the Holy Heart of Mary emerges on Manteno's "Catholic Block". Challenges and victories of nineteenth century life in a small midwest farm town parish continue to come swift and often. The sister servants and Saint Joseph Parish pull through both World Wars, the Influenza Pandemic, and Great Depression.
