Book Synopsis Postcards on Parchment by : Kathryn M. Rudy
Download or read book Postcards on Parchment written by Kathryn M. Rudy and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medieval prayer books held not only the devotions and meditations of Christianity, but also housed, slipped between pages, sundry notes, reminders, and ephemera, such as pilgrims' badges, sworn oaths, and small painted images. Many of these last items have been classified as manuscript illumination, but Kathryn M. Rudy argues that these pictures should be called, instead, parchment paintings, similar to postcards. In a delightful study identifying this group of images for the first time, Rudy delineates how these objects functioned apart from the books in which they were kept. Whereas manuscript illuminations were designed to provide a visual narrative to accompany a book's text, parchment paintings offered a kind of autonomous currency for exchange between individuals--people who longed for saturated color in a gray world of wood, stone, and earth. These small, colorful pictures offered a brilliant reprieve, and Rudy shows how these intriguing and previously unfamiliar images were traded and cherished, shedding light into the everyday life and relationships of those in the medieval Low Countries.

Book Synopsis Cities I've Never Lived In by : Sara Majka
Download or read book Cities I've Never Lived In written by Sara Majka and published by Graywolf Press. This book was released on 2016-02-16 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In subtle, sensuous prose, the stories in Sara Majka's debut collection explore distance in all its forms: the emotional spaces that open up between family members, friends, and lovers; the gaps that emerge between who we were and who we are; the gulf between our private and public selves. At the center of the collection is a series of stories narrated by a young American woman in the wake of a divorce; wry and shy but never less than open to the world, she recalls the places and people she has been close to, the dreams she has pursued and those she has left unfulfilled. Interspersed with these intimate first-person stories are stand-alone pieces where the tight focus on the narrator's life gives way to closely observed accounts of the lives of others. A book about belonging, and how much of yourself to give up in the pursuit of that, Cities I've Never Lived In offers stories that reveal, with great sadness and great humor, the ways we are most of all citizens of the places where we cannot be. Cities I've Never Lived In is the second book in Graywolf's collaboration with the literary magazine A Public Space.

The history of this remarkable community is captured here through the images of the picture postcard. With the construction of each new bank, school, bridge, and church, the postcard became a convenient way to promote and celebrate the achievement; now, these images preserve a collective record of Roanoke's heritage. See how the area looked in the early 1900s, with its dirt streets, trolley tracks, horse-drawn wagons, and Model Ts. Postcards of succeeding decades frame the growth of Roanoke from a railroad town to the center of commerce and industry in Southwestern Virginia.

Book excerpt: Although Pensacola was permanently settled in 1698, not until the harvesting of yellow pine trees between 1870 and 1910 did the city begin to grow and prosper. During this golden era, a building boom transformed the city into a vibrant seaport and economic center. Pensacola's natural deep water harbor attracted merchant ships, and railroads increased access for goods and human transportation. Between 1825 and 1844, the Redoubt, the Navy Yard, and Forts Barrancas, Pickens, and McRee were constructed. Pensacola's many nicknames included "Cradle of Naval Aviation," "Annapolis of the Air," and "Mother-in-law of the U.S. Navy" since a large number of local women married navy men.
