Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Hoedowns, Reels, and Frolics, old-time musician and flatfoot dancer Philip Jamison journeys into the past and surveys the present to tell the story behind the square dances, step dances, reels, and other forms of dance practiced in southern Appalachia. These distinctive folk dances, Jamison argues, are not the unaltered jigs and reels brought by early British settlers, but hybrids that developed over time by adopting and incorporating elements from other popular forms. He traces the forms from their European, African American, and Native American roots to the modern day. On the way he explores the powerful influence of black culture, showing how practices such as calling dances as well as specific kinds of steps combined with white European forms to create distinctly "American" dances. From cakewalks to clogging, and from the Shoo-fly Swing to the Virginia Reel, Hoedowns, Reels, and Frolics reinterprets an essential aspect of Appalachian culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western square dance calling is a dynamic mixture of speech and singing. Callers come from different backgrounds; some begin as singers, others begin calling because they are avid square dancers. Because of the popularity of Western square dancing in both North America and abroad, callers hail from regions across the United States and throughout the world. I chose ethnography as my research method because I am interested in studying contemporary Western square dance calling practices. I focused on the calling of one individual, Jack Pladdys, because Cincinnati dancers consider him a skilled caller. Pladdys began calling in 1982 and called professionally for several years. For ten successive weeks, I observed Pladdys calling and teaching a weekly Western square dance class at the Wyoming Civic Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. By observing Western square dance activities and by interviewing square dance participants, including square dance organization officers and Jack Pladdys, I gained knowledge of the contemporary Western square dance tradition in Cincinnati. In this thesis, I define Western square dance terminology related to callers' activities, discuss musical aspects of calling, and identify teaching methods used by callers. Additionally, I develop a list of calling characteristics in their order of relative importance in Cincinnati, Ohio. Through my research and writing, I attempt to begin the process of documenting the traits that distinguish a Western square dance caller as "good" within a specific community of Western square dancers. By documenting the techniques involved in successful calling, I hope to enhance the small body of research on contemporary Western square dance practices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there have been countless fun books written on square dancing, Squaredance Fundamentals was the first to cut to the chase. There is no interesting history of square dancing, there are no entertaining anecdotes, just the nuts and bolts of how to square dance. The author worked painstakingly with the graphic artist to execute a feat never achieved before in a square dance manual. Revolutionary illustrations show the dancer's point of view, not just the spectators' viewpoint. Dancers can, without turning on their heads, glean from the detailed illustrations exactly what they need to be doing with their hands, feet, etc. Each dancer can effortlessly grasp the material and easily retain it. Renown master caller/teacher, Marshall Flippo, assiduously assisted the author in establishing the very first guidelines for standardized "Basic Maneuvers" which would enable square dancers to dance gracefully with any group, anywhere. This was a true innovation in square dancing not yet available in the late 1960's. Marshall also painstakingly edited this first-of-its-kind book, twice! - to be sure it met the highest standards of accuracy and ease of understanding for square dancing neophytes. One of the greatest merits of this book is its logical continuity, which can be a tremendous aid to both the caller/teacher and the student, regardless of how it is used. New dancers, taking lessons, can go home and review what they have learned in class and prepare for the next, significantly shortening the learning curve. Although a few changes in the names of the calls have been made through the years, it is a simple task to merely write in the current name for the square dance call according to your instructor. But no one shows you better how to execute the maneuvers than John W. Jones with his super simplified instructions and state-of-the-art illustrations in Squaredance Fundamentals - the gold standard for over 37 years.

Lupe Wong is going to be the first female pitcher in the Major Leagues. She's also championed causes her whole young life. Some worthy...like expanding the options for race on school tests beyond just a few bubbles. And some not so much...like complaining to the BBC about the length between Doctor Who seasons. Lupe needs an A in all her classes in order to meet her favorite pitcher, Fu Li Hernandez, who's Chinacan/Mexinese just like her. So when the horror that is square dancing rears its head in gym? Obviously she's not gonna let that slide. Not since Millicent Min, Girl Genius has a debut novel introduced a character so memorably, with such humor and emotional insight. Even square dancing fans will agree...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A square dance is a dance for four couples (eight dancers in total) arranged in a square, with one couple on each side, facing the middle of the square. Square dances contain elements from numerous traditional dances and were first documented in 16th-century England. The book is a romance, a mystery, a lively collection of stories and humor about many kinds of music and dance, and an imaginative fiction. But, at its heart it is a song of praise for the dance that spun "connective fibers that stitched the individuals into the warp and woof of society . . . fleshed-out demonstrations that an individual belonged there, that the world of people around them included them, held their hands, danced with them."
