Book excerpt: The murder of a New Mexico rancher sets off this explosive Western thriller by the New York Times bestselling authors of The Big Showdown. Rancher George Cullen doesn’t like the Santa Fe Railroad’s plan to drive a spur through his town. He intends to put up a fight—even though everyone else in Trinidad, New Mexico, including his own daughter, stands on the side of the railroad . . . Sheriff Caleb York rides out to the Bar-O to reason with his old friend. But Cullen’s ex-partner, Burt O’Malley, is back in town after a twenty-year stint in the pen. And hired gun Alver Hollis, aka the Preacherman, has shown up with two cronies, claiming they’re in town for a big poker game. With the whole town on the verge of a shootout, Caleb keeps a firm grip on his Colt .44. Soon enough, he’ll take dead aim to keep the peace . . . Shortly before his death, legendary crime writer Mickey Spillane asked that his friend and protégé Max Allan Collins—himself an acclaimed writer—complete his unfinished works. Among them was an unproduced screenplay featuring Sheriff Caleb York, which sparked the action-packed, truly gritty Caleb York Western series. Praise for Mickey Spillane and Max Allan Collins “Collins displays his mastery of Spillane’s distinctive two-fisted prose.” —Publishers Weekly “Spillane is a pioneer of tough-guy ethics.” —Washington Post

Book excerpt: An up-close look at the democratic race for the White House—it isn't pretty Spanking the Donkey is a campaign diary like no other. Celebrated reporter Matt Taibbi turns a withering eye on the kissing contest of puffed-up martinets and egomaniacal fantasists more generally known as the 2004 Democratic primaries. Taibbi's contempt for the whole charade, and for most of those involved (including a generous helping of his fellow journalists), makes for a searing and highly entertaining account. His refusal to take the proceedings seriously leads him to volunteer for Wesley Clark's New Hampshire campaign in the guise of an adult-film director, while his take on a John Edwards press conference in New York City is filtered through the haze of hallucinogenic drugs. Taking up residence in slums and halfway houses as he follows the circus around the country, Taibbi juxtaposes an idiotic dog-and-pony show in which clashes of plainly identical candidates are presented as real controversies, with the quite separate concerns of the ordinary Americans whose lodgings he shares. The gap between the antiseptic exercise in faint patriotic optimism that is mainstream politics and the harsh realities of life for the millions of Americans that the electoral parade simply passes by has never been more sharply, or hilariously, sketched.

Book excerpt: The central character, Hamer Shawcross, starts as a studious boy in an aspirational working-class family in Ancoats, Manchester; he becomes a socialist activist and soon a career politician, who eventually is absorbed by the upper classes he had begun by combating. The author's sympathies obviously lie with Shawcross's friends and associates who remain faithful to the cause; however, many of the middle class and aristocratic characters are portrayed fairly sympathetically, and one character whose career parallels that of Shawcross in his rise from poverty to eminence is a market-boy who becomes a major capitalist. The book also gives a fair impression of the growth particularly of the Labour Party; historical characters, such as Keir Hardie, occasionally appear, and part of the book is taken up with the hardships of life for coal mining communities in South Wales at the turn of the 20th century. The treatment of the militant women's suffrage movement is especially detailed--there are graphic descriptions of imprisonment and forcible feeding of hunger strikers. Fame is the Spur covers the rise of the socialist labour movement in Britain from the mid 19th century to the 1930s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanking Is a Global Phenomenon looks at this traditional method of corporal punishment from a deep perspective, placing it in its historical context, and from a wide point of view, comparing changing attitudes across cultures and generations. The result of this survey by Fenold Alexis is a work on a topic broadly connected to peoples lives, but rarely examined in such detail. The approach of Spanking Is a Global Phenomenon takes the reader through the history and tradition of spanking, the roles of culture and religions, the connections to slavery, the laws governing spanking, and a survey of attitudes and practices by gender and generation. In the end, Spanking Is a Global Phenomenon provides a comprehensive look at a widespread and deeply rooted parenting practice that tends not to garner such thorough attention. Fenold Alexis explores spankings scriptural and historical background, surveys its legal and cultural contexts in contemporary culture, and suggests ways for parents to administer alternative forms of discipline that work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its unparalleled coverage of English slang of all types (from 18th-century cant to contemporary gay slang), and its uncluttered editorial apparatus, Cassell's Dictionary of Slang was warmly received when its first edition appeared in 1998. 'Brilliant.' said Mark Lawson on BBC2's The Late Review; 'This is a terrific piece of work - learned, entertaining, funny, stimulating' said Jonathan Meades in The Evening Standard. But now the world's best single-volume dictionary of English slang is about to get even better. Jonathon Green has spent the last seven years on a vast project: to research in depth the English slang vocabulary and to hunt down and record written instances of the use of as many slang words as possible. This has entailed trawling through more than 4000 books - plus song lyrics, TV and movie scripts, and many newspapers and magazines - for relevant material. The research has thrown up some fascinating results
