Book excerpt: "For fans of Ian McGuire's The North Water and Michael Punke's The Revenant, Child in the Valley by Gordy Sauer is a coming-of-age story set in the harsh landscape of Gold Rush America, centering on a orphan's journey to California in a wagon train of ruthless 49ers. Seventeen-year-old Joshua Gaines is suddenly orphaned in 1849, and after discovering that his foster father has left him deeply in debt, he flees his St. Louis home for Independence, Missouri. There, he plans to offer his medical expertise in exchange for passage to California in a Gold Rush party. Joshua is initially rebuffed given his youth and inexperience, but as his resentment and greed grow, a chance encounter with a ruthless adventurer and an ex-slave enlists him in a party comprised of provincial identical twins and a wealthy Englishman. The party departs overland along a 1,500-mile trail carved out by hardship, disease, violence, and death. When finally they arrive starving and exhausted in California's Sacramento Valley, Joshua discovers that attaining those riches is not as simple as pulling them from the riverbed, forcing him to redefine his sense of morality within the context of his greed; his complex sexuality; and the growing, though still-fledgling, American government. This novel is part of the Cold Mountain Fund Series, in partnership with Charles Frazier"--

Book Synopsis Welcome to Spring Valley by : Mary John Eidson
Download or read book Welcome to Spring Valley written by Mary John Eidson and published by Abbott Press. This book was released on 2012-08-17 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to Spring Valley The idea seemed ridiculously far-fetched. Why would a young couple with small children want a place in the wilds of east Texas? Deep in the forest of east Texas lots of hickory and oak trees grow. A beautiful part of the state, there is lots of wildlife; whitetail deer roam, beaver hide in marshes, raccoons play, and a whole world of birds call it home. This is a story about my family. Getting acquainted with varied forms of wildlife was truly an exciting adventure. The whitetail deer racing to jump the fence, raccoons peeping in the window at us, beaver splashing in the water, and placing small fingerlings in a new pond to grow and get ready for the frying pan were activities that will not be forgotten. Was this a dream or a nightmare? A site overlooking the valley was the chosen spot for our cabin to be built. It also prompted the name of this book as live springs were discovered in the valley; springs bubbling out of the earth, too beautiful to describe. Each trip was full of challenges; but also many rewards. Building a pond and the purchase of a fl at bottom boat made fishing, swimming, and relaxing in the sun possible. Soon it became important to own horses. Six horses soon called Spring Valley home. When we look back at memorable times, many things come to mind. I will be forever grateful that the No in my mind became Yes on my lips.

Download or read book Environmental contamination many uncertainties affect the progress of the Spring Valley cleanup. written by and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principal government entities involved at the Spring Valley site are carrying out their roles and responsibilities in cleaning up the site primarily under the Defense Environmental Restoration Program (environmental restoration program), which was established by the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act of 1986. Under the environmental restoration program, Defense is authorized to identify, investigate, and clean up environmental contamination at formerly used defense sites (FUDS). The Corps is responsible for these activities at Spring Valley. Defense is required under the environmental restoration program to consult with EPA, which has its own authority to act at the site under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980 (sometimes referred to as "Superfund"). Under the program, Defense's activities must also be consistent with a statutory provision that addresses, among other things, participation by the affected states-in this case, the District of Columbia. Under the Corps' program guidance for FUDS, the District of Columbia has a role in defining the cleanup levels at the Spring Valley site. In carrying out their roles, the government entities have, over time, formed an active partnership to make cleanup decisions. For example, the Corps leads the effort to identify hazards, but in many cases it uses the recommendations of the District of Columbia and EPA to look for hazards buried at certain sites. While the entities have not agreed on all cleanup decisions, officials acknowledge that, by having formed a partnership, a means exists to foster communication and collaboration, and officials of all three entities stated that the partnership is operating effectively. Continued progress at the site will depend, in part, on the effectiveness of this partnership over the duration of the cleanup period.
