This research delves into the domain of science that garners recognition or confers benefits to the public, herein referred to as the Science of Public Recognition and Benefits (SPRB). Specifically, our investigation centers on four distinct categories of SPRB, namely: papers that receive citations in patented inventions, papers employed in clinical trials, papers featured in news outlets, and papers disseminated through social media platforms. Our objective is to scrutinize their unique characteristics, encompassing the scale of research teams involved, their impact, as well as the novelty they exhibit in terms of unconventional combinations and the extent of paradigm-shifting disruption they embody. we have unearthed compelling insights regarding the nature of SPRB. Our findings indicate that SPRB exhibits larger research teams, exerts a higher citation impact, and showcases a greater level of novelty. Our research also uncovers divergent patterns within these distinct categories. Scientific studies that receive extensive coverage in news outlets or disseminated through social media channels tend to be more disruptive, yet research that receives recognition through patented inventions or clinical trials tends to exhibit lower levels of disruption, indicating a higher degree of conformity to existing frameworks.

Following the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941, the enemy and neutral press covering the German occupation of the Baltic states offered the British government a vital stream of OSINT covering the entire German East. OSINT was the only form of intelligence available to the British from the Nazi-occupied Soviet Union, due to the Foreign Office suspension of all covert intelligence gathering inside the Soviet Union. The risk of jeopardising the fragile Anglo-Soviet alliance was considered too great to continue covert intelligence operations.
