Unlike native Drosophila, SWD females have a serrated ovipositor that allows them to attack ripening fruit. Since its introduction, it is unclear how and where they overwinter in Arkansas, what local hosts they utilize and what potential alternative tactics can be used to combat this pest. In states north of Arkansas, winter morphs (WM) of SWD are larger, darker pigmented, and can survive colder temperatures than SWD flies found in the summer. These WM were found in a wide range of alternative fruited hosts during the winter. Many researchers have begun to evaluate efficacy of entomopathogenic fungi against this pest. The objectives of this study were to determine if WM were present in Arkansas; how long into the winter months could SWD be captured and what alternative resources did they utilize in Arkansas; and if Beauveria bassiana was effective against this pest. Trap collections from May and October (2015-2017) contained WM female SWD adults that were darker and larger than flies caught in traps from June-August (2015-2017). SWD baited traps were set out from October 2017-May 2018 to see if and how late SWD appeared in Arkansas. Adults were caught until January 2018. Alternative fruit resources they used into the fall and winter months were Phytolacca americana L., Lonicera sempervirens L., Rhamnus caroliniana (Walter) A. Gray, Lonicera maackii (Rupr.) Herder and Callicarpa americana L. (purple). In the spring, the only alternative host that SWD utilized was Morus rubra L. Contact sprays of B. bassiana strain GHA at rates from 2.2 x 106 to 2.2 x 108 spores per ml killed.

Book excerpt: Spotted wing Drosophila (SWD), Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae), is a pest of small and stone fruits that is widely distributed across much of the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia. Unlike other members of the Drosophilidae that only lay eggs in overripe or rotting fruit, SWD infest ripening and ripe fruit. The female SWD has a serrated ovipositor that allows her to lay eggs under the skin of a wide range of fruits, where the eggs hatch into larvae and they consume the inside of the fruit. This feeding results in fruit collapse and deterioration, and the hole created by the oviposition puncture allows for secondary infection by microorganisms, yield losses, reduced fruit quality and degrades. The current control is to apply an insecticide treatment when the fruit begins to color and continue to keep the crop protected with chemical treatments until harvest is complete. The current monitoring tools are not sensitive enough to attract SWD at the critical time to establish economic thresholds, appropriately time treatments and allow growers to make good management decisions. The objective of this research project was to determine if a more sensitive attractant than the currently standard 5% acidity apple cider vinegar traps could be defined. A number of food products and commercially available lures were tested in greenhouse and field experiments for their attractiveness to D. suzukii. There were no bait treatments that captured significantly more D. suzukii than the currently standard 5% acidity apple cider vinegar(ACV)-baited traps. Balsamic vinegar, soy sauce, balsamic honey vinegar, a D. melanogaster lure, Monterey Insect Bait, rice vinegar, seasoned rice vinegar, and NuLure® performed similarly to ACV, broadening the field of starting material that could be investigated for their use as an SWD attractant. A number of fermentation compounds were also tested in greenhouse and field trials for their attractiveness to SWD. Four classes of compounds were tested: short chain alcohols, short chain carboxylic acids, low molecular weight acetates, and esters of 2-phenylethanol. In the greenhouse trials, some of the compounds alone were determined to be attractive and subsequently used in field trials. However, none of the compounds or combinations of the compounds tested improved attractiveness of apple cider vinegar traps when compared to the standard 5% acidity apple cider vinegar-baited trap.

Book excerpt: Drosophila suzukii is a destructive vinegar fly that causes hundreds of millions of dollars in economic losses per year. Monitoring traps are an important tool for estimating D. suzukii activity. Understanding differences in summer and winter morph D. suzukii behavior and response to trap placement could improve trapping programs. I found a 3.5℗ʻC difference in temperature where 25% of D. suzukii walked for summer and winter morphs when evaluating locomotion temperature thresholds. When evaluating trap position preferences in the laboratory, I found that placement of trap was the determining factor for where winter morph D. suzukii were captured and winter morph were 6 times more likely to be captured in a floor trap than an aerial trap. In the field, I found that aerial cup traps were most effective for summer trapping and cup traps placed on the ground were most effective for winter trapping. However, during mid-August I observed significantly more summer morph male flies captured in dome traps placed on or under leaf litter. Additionally, the aerial cup traps were the least selective for D. suzukii, capturing 89 times more non-target drosophilids than D. suzukii. My results provide insight into the behavioral differences between summer and winter morph D. suzukii. Furthermore, my data shows how season influences preferred trap position, and could lead to improved monitoring of D. suzukii.
