Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays highlights the controversies surrounding racism in sports and African American athletes, examining the racial discrimination that exists in one of the most public arenas in the 21st century. Despite increasing diversity in the American population, race and racial bias continue to be significant issues in the United States. Sports—one of the most visible and important subsets of American culture—directly reflect our society's beliefs about race. This book examines racial controversy and conflict in various sports in the United States in both previous eras as well as the current "Age of Obama." The essays in the work explain how racial ideologies are created and recreated in all areas of public life, including the world of sports. The authors address a wide range of sports, including ones where racial minorities are in the numerical minority, such as hockey. Specific topics covered include the devaluation of black athletes, racism in Major League Baseball, and the treatment of black female athletes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Riotous Deathscapes, Hugo ka Canham presents an understanding of life and death based on indigenous and black ways of knowing that he terms Mpondo theory. Focusing on amaMpondo people from rural Mpondoland, in South Africa’s Eastern Cape, Canham outlines the methodologies that have enabled the community’s resilience and survival. He assembles historical events and a cast of ancestral and living characters, following the tenor of village life, to offer a portrait of how Mpondo people live and die in the face of centuries of abandonment, trauma, antiblackness, and death. Canham shows that Mpondo theory is grounded in and develops in relation to the natural world, where the river and hill are key sites of being and resistance. Central too, is the interface between ancestors and the living, in which life and death become a continuity and a boundlessness that white supremacy and neoliberalism cannot interdict. By charting a course of black life in Mpondoland, Canham tells a story of blackness on the African continent and beyond. Duke University Press Scholars of Color First Book Award Recipient

Book excerpt: The Textbook was prepared in accordance with the Federal State Educational Standard for Higher Education as applied to specialisation 40.03.01 “Jurisprudence” (Bachelor (degree) qualification) and the syllabus of the academic discipline “International Sports Law”, approved by the International Law Department of the Kutafin Moscow State Law University in January 2017. The Textbook consists of 17 chapters. They correspond to the themes of the syllabus of the academic discipline. In its General part, the history, object, subjects, sources, special principles of international sports law, the process of regulation of international sports relations at the universal level within the framework of the United Nations, its specialised agencies and programs, at the regional level within the Council of Europe and the European Union, at the bilateral level are considered. The Author makes a corresponding distinction with the object, subjects, sources, special principles of lex sportiva, a set of corporate norms elaborated by the International Olympic Committee, the International Paralympic Committee, international and national sports federations. Special attention is paid to the study of ways of resolving sports disputes through arbitration and appeal proceedings in the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), by means of judicial proceedings in the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) and the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU). The Special Part of the Textbook identifies problem areas that require additional efforts to implement international legal and corporate regulations: the use of doping in sport, violence and hooligan behaviour of spectators and fans, environmental protection when organising international sports competitions, economic crimes and discrimination in international sports, protection of property rights with regard to television and radio broadcasts of international sports competitions, the use of Olympic symbols, countering threats to a healthy lifestyle. International instruments and acts of the Russian legislation are as of May 2018. The Textbook will be of interest for Bachelor students of law, lecturers of higher education institutions, practicing lawyers, staff members of organizations of the Olympic and Paralympic movements, as well as for all those whose academic interests and practical activities are connected with international law, sports law and lex sportivа.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by specialists in the field of Egyptology, this book is a readable introduction to ancient Egypt, covering all anticipated subjects and stressing the monuments and material culture of this remarkable ancient civilization. The rich natural resources of ancient Egypt provided a wealth of raw material for its structures, sculptures, and art, while its geographic isolation helped to ensure the survival of its rich culture for centuries. While other references focus on the people and battles central to Egyptian history, this reference explores the material culture and social institutions of ancient Egypt. The book focuses on pharaonic Egypt, covering the period from roughly 5000 BCE to the beginning of the Greco-Roman Period in 320 BCE. At the front of the work, a timeline provides a quick look at the major events in Egyptian history, and an introduction surveys ancient Egypt's physical geography and history. Alphabetically arranged reference entries written by expert contributors then provide fundamental information about the buildings, jewelry, social practices, and other topics related to the material culture and institutions that made up the Egyptian world. Excerpts from primary source historical documents provide evidence for what we know about ancient Egyptian culture, and suggestions for further reading direct users to additional sources of information.
