Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sporting Notions of Present Days and Past Writing on sport which sport devotees read is apt to be found repellent, if not unintelligible, by the non-initiated. Martin Cobbett possessed in a very special degree the art (a perfectly unconscious one no one more surprised than the striker, as he would say) of discoursing on such matters so as to appeal to all classes. It was, of course, in his descriptions of country rambles, such as are collected in Wayfaring N otions, that this charac teristic - perhaps it was his lovableness came out most continually; but in a measure it was the same with all his work, and I have tried to choose out those portions of it which exemplify his faculty of interesting all classes of readers, and specially the Refereaders, who were all his friends. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Sports and Sportsmen: Or the Willey Country Since the old Forest Periods, and since old Squire Forester's day even, the manners and the customs of the nation have changed; but the old love of sport discoverable in our ancestors, and inherited more or less by them from theirs, remains as a link connecting past generations with the present. It matters not, it appears to me, whether either the writer or the reader indulges himself in such sports or not, he may be equally willing to recall the Olden Time, with its instances of rough and ready pluck and daring, and to listen to an old song, made by an aged pate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pierce Egan's Book of Sports, and Mirror of Life: Embracing the Turf, the Chase, the Ring, and the Stage; Interspersed With Original Memoirs of Sporting Men, Etc When the Arab falls from his mare, and is unable to rise, she will immediately stand still, and neigh until assistance arrives. If he lies down to sleep, as fatigue sometimes compels him, in the midst of the desert, she stands watchful over. Him, and neighs and rouses him i-f-either man or beast approaches. An old Arab -had a valuable mare that had carried him for fifteen years, in many a hard-fought battle, and many a rapid, weary march; at length, eighty years old, and unable longer to ride her, he gave her, and a scimitar that had been his father's, to his eldest son, and told him to appreciate their value, and never lie down to rest until he had rubbed them both as bright as a looking-glass. In the first skirmish in which the young man was engaged, he was killed, and the mare fell into the hands of the enemy. When the news reached the old man, he exclaimed that life was no longer worth preserving, for he had lost both his son and his mare, and he grieved for one as much as the other and he immediately sickened and died. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Racing and 'Chasing: A Collection of Sporting Stories IN these days, when so many books are issued, some excuse seems to be required for the publication Of a volume Of reprints. I can only plead the cordial recep tion which was given to my former books, Sketches in the Hunting Field, ' and 'race Course and Covert Side, ' by the critics and the readers to whom I en deavoured specially to appeal. The world Of sport may be a limited one, but that its limits are enormous cannot be doubted by anybody who surveys the crowd at Epsom on the Derby Day, or at Aintree when the horses are at the post for the Grand National. I have to return thanks to Sir william ingram for the kind permission he gave me to republish those Of the following stories and sketches which appeared in the Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News during the years that I. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Athletic Sports and Festivals IT is my hope that the present volume may prove of interest to the general reader as well as to the student of the past. For though its subject may seem at first sight purely archaeological, many of the problems with which it deals are as real to us to-day as they were to the Greeks. The place of physical training and of games in education, the place of athletics in our daily life and in our national life, are questions of present importance to us all, and in considering these questions we cannot fail to learn something from the athletic history of a nation which for a time at least succeeded in reconciling the rival claims of body and of mind, and immortalized this result in its art. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences, Sporting and Otherwise, of Early Days in Rockford, Ill Doct. Josiah C. Goodhue, the subject of this sketch, of whom a more extended notice is given in the body of this work, and author of the name Rock Ford, was born at Putney, Vermont in 1803; graduated at Yale Medical College and commenced the practice of his profession at St. Thomas, Upper Canada, in 1824, where he was married to Catherine Dunn. He migrated to Chicago in 1832, and was prominent in the affairs of that city until he came to Rockford to reside in 1838. Doct. Goodhue was one of the founders of what afterwards became Rush Medical College at Chicago, and was elected alderman of the first ward at the first election under city organization in March 1837. His daughter, Mrs. C. F. Holland, now of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, who has heard him relate the incident of naming the town, supplies me with these facts. During the summer of 1835, DanielS. Haight and Germanicus Kent, then residing at what is now Rockford, William H. Gilman of Belvidere, John P. Chapin and Ebenezer Peck of Chicago, and Stephen Edgel, afterwards of St. Louis, met at the office of Doct. Goodhue on Lake street in Chicago, to name the claim, or mill privilege, which they hoped would at some time in the future become a town. All these were interested in the claim, as was Luther O. Crocker, for many years after a citizen of Freeport, Illinois. Mrs. Kent had suggested "Midway" as an appropriate title, it being nearly equidistant from Chicago and Galena, which name none of the interested parties approved. Various names were suggested and rejected, until Doct. Goodhue said "Why not call it Rock Ford, from the splendid rockbottom ford on the river there?" It seemed an inspiration, and was adopted unanimously. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Past Days in India: Or Sporting Reminiscences of the Valley of the Soane and the Basin of Singrowlee Although there are doubtless many districts in India where a tour of a month or two may be very agreeably spent, yet, from all that I have seen or heard of, I would unhesitatingly give the palm, for sport in general, to Central India, and par excellence to the district of Mirzapore. Previous to the great Indian Mutiny my lot in life was to be stationed at a central point on the Kymore range of hills in the Mirzapore district, whence duty called me to make journeys of various lengths in different directions. Bachelor as I was, and somewhat fond of the gun, I contrived to combine pleasure with duty in my various tours. Isolated from all society, confined strictly by my official duties within certain limits of country, it frequently happened that months passed without my having intercourse with any fellow-Christian. Living wholly among the native population then, being sometimes the sole European within a radius of sixty miles, and much more than that in some directions, I necessarily came into contact with a large amount of Indian rural life and scenery.
