Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sporting Firearms of Today in Use There is a worn and discolored leather-bound volume, with tarnished gilt edges, in my bookcase, that is a cherished possession, My Game Register - a gift from a splendid old British sportsman, who gave it to me as a boy, with the advice to keep in it always a record of clean sport which I would be proud to look back upon in the days to come. Once in a while on a blustery day, when the air is keen and has that tang to it which creeps into every sportsman's blood, with an insidious cunning, making him forget the crowds and the noisy city streets about him and picture in their stead the stubble fields, with their many-colored backgrounds of frost-tinted hardwoods, or dreary expanses of lonely marshland, with the wind! whistling through the sedge. I will go home disconsolately, with a longing in my heart, as does every sportsman cursed with a vivid imagination, which nothing can appease but a day afield under the autumn skies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sporting Guns and Gunpowders, Vol. 1: Comprising a Selection From Reports of Experiments, and Other Articles Published in the "Field" Newspaper, Relative to Fire Arms and Explosives Mr. Walsh was better known to the general public by his nom de plume of Stonehenge. Before he became editor of the Field he had published (in 1856) his volume on British Rural Sports, which has since passed through seventeen editions. In this work he gave particulars of the breech loaders then coming into vogue, and inserted fuller details in his book on The Shot Gun and Sporting Rifle (published in Vol. I. Of The Modern Sportsman's Gun and Rifle (which appeared in 1882) was devoted to game and wildiowl guns; and Vol. II. (published in 1884) treated of sporting and match rifles, together with revolvers. His other works include The Horse in the Stable nd the Field (12th edit 1887) Dogs of the British Islands (5th edit 1888) The Dog in Health and Disease, and The Greyhound. A Treatise on Breeding and Training of Greyhounds for Public Cour-sing. He was aho the author of books on domestic economy and domestic medicine, and e inventor of various contrivances in connection with guns, tricycles, ac.penetration of the shot; and these pads continued to be used for nearly twenty years, up to the trial of cylinder and choke bore guns with nitro and black powders in 1878. In 1879, however, the paper pads gave way to Mr. Walsh's force gauge, with which the trial of 12, 16, and 20-bore guns was carried out. In 1884 he had hollow leaden cylinders made to serve as the artificial breech end of a gunbarrel, whereby to test the explosive force of gunpowders, and ascertain what sfiects were produced by undue drying of the powders. Since Mr. Walsh's death, other instruments and improvements upon his original constructions have been introduced; and some of the results of experiments made with the various kinds of apparatus are given in subsequent pages, together with occasional remarks tending to show the bearing of one set of experiments upon another series. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Sportsman's Gun and Rifle, Vol. 2 of 2: Including Game and Wildfowl Guns, Sporting and Match Rifles and Revolvers; The Sporting Rifle, Match Rifle, and Revolver Although, as I stated in my Preface to the First Volume of this work, I began to examine into the subjects connected with the shot gun and rifle a quarter of a century ago, I had not kept my knowledge on a level with the great progress made in the latter arm during the last few years. When Sir Joseph Whitworth promulgated the results of his experiments in 1858, I took considerable pains to ascertain their value, not only from a military point of view, but also from that of the Sportsman and for some years after the institution of the annual trial of small bores by the National Rifle Association, I carefully-attended them at Woolwich, and duly reported the results in the Field, as well as the shooting of the selected rifle at Wimbledon. After some few years, however, they ceased to be of much value to the sportsman, and the pressure of other matters induced me not only to forego all allusion to the trials, but also to discontinue the reports of the Wimbledon Meetings. The result was that, when, after the publication of the first volume, on the Shot gun, I had to turn my attention to the rifle, Ifound that I was several. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sharpshooting for Sport and War To a small elementary work on the acquisition of the art of 'sharpshooting' with the rifle I have been asked to point out, in an introductory preface, the part the armed civilian has played in the past history, and indicate his worth to the community today. Many volumes have been compiled on the subject, but have not exhausted its interest. The space at my disposal being inadequate, I am necessarily brief.
