Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sporting Adventures in the Far West Having been a wanderer for nearly seven years in the Par West, a part of the time being ere railways were known i there, and when very few whites, except the troops, were found in regions which now boast of thousands, I devoted particular attention to studying the fauna of the country, especially the game, whether it was fur, fin, or feather. My object in preparing this work has been to give the general characteristics, the haunts, habits, and the best method of hunting the largest class of game; and as my facts are derived from personal experience, and from that of some of the most famous scouts and hunters I met in the West, I hope they may be found generally accurate. The contests between men and the fiercer creatures which are related were, when I do not speak personally, heard around the camp fire or in the Indians wigwam, and one or two were culled from Western newspapers. Having no desire to pose as a Nimrod, I may say that some of my hunting was as much for the purpose of studying the fer nature as for killing them, and that their life was frequently more pleasing to me than their death. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wild Sports in the Far West ON my return, a short time since, to my native land, from the wilds of America, it was not at first my intention to offer to the public the contents of the diary I had kept during my travels, and written out in detail as an employment for my leisure hours, for the exclusive use of my family in Germany. Incited, however, by the interest awakened by the publication of a few extracts in one of our periodicals, and yielding to the wishes expressed by various friends who had read the remainder, I undertook to correct and revise my notes, and to mould into a continuous narrative a diary which I had only kept when circumstances worthy of being chronicled arose, - for instance, on the voyage out, on my march through the United States, during my sojourn among the swamps of Arkansas, and finally during my hunting trip in the Ozark moun tains. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Buffalo Land: An Authentic Account of the Discoveries, Adventures, and Mishaps of a Scientific and Sporting Party in the Wild West I have given the mistakes as well as triumphs of our expedition, and the members of the party will readily recognize their familiar camp names. The disguise will probably be pleasant, as few like to see their failures on public parade, preferring rather to leave these in barracks, and let their successes only appear at review. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hunting Sports in the West: Comprising Adventures of the Most Celebrated Hunters and Trappers This collection of stories is designed to exhibit the western hunters and trappers in their true character. The narratives are all matters of fact and not of fancy, and they have been selected from a great mass of a similar character, on a principle of choice, which the compiler believes will be approved by his readers; the principle, namely, of displaying all the different phases of the western hunter's perilous and adventurous life, as far as was practicable in so small a space. The reader, it is believed, will find in the volume a sufficient amount of novelty and variety, to repay him for the time spent in perusing its pages; and he will, probably, on closing it, come to the same conclusion which the compiler arrived at long since, namely, that hunting adventures with bears, panthers, wild cats, and other animals of a similar description, are, on the whole. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wild Sports of the West: Interspersed With Legendary Tales, and Local Sketches Some explanation may be necessary for obtruding upon the public the private details of a Sportsman's life, and particularly when the scene of his exploits is laid within the four seas of Britain. In the customary course of field adventure, few besides the individual concerned are much interested in the successes and disappointments he experiences; and rural sports are, in all their general incidents, so essentially alike, as to render their minute description almost invariably a dull and unprofitable record. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Young Nimrods in North America: A Book for Boys Nimrods has endeavored to instruct the boys of America in the ways of the hunter's life. He has made use of his own experience among the wild animals of our forests and plains, and has also drawn freely from the accounts of others. He has sought to amuse as well as to instruct, and hopes that the favor that has been extended to his work in other directions will be accorded to the present effort. A fair amount of natural history has been interwoven with the stories of hunting and fishing; it has been the writer's aim to convey informa tion in such form that it would not be open tothe charge of dulness and prolixity, and to this end the dialogue form has been freely introduced. How far he has succeeded in this endeavor he leaves the reader to de termine. The illustrations have been taken from previous publications of Har per Brothers, but in all instances they have been carefully chosen with a view to the correct representation of the objects described. The an thor is specially indebted to General Marcy's Army Life on the Bor der, both for illustrations and for descriptions of certain phases of fron tier life which that veteran officer has so graphically delineated. He is also under obligations to Mr. Murphy's Sporting Adventures in the Far West, and to the accounts of life in the buffalo land by Mr. Theodore R. Davis. Graff Collection of Western Americana consists of some 10,000 books, manuscripts, maps, pamphlets, broadsides, broadsheets, and photographs, of which about half are described in the present catalogue. The Graff Collection displays the remarkable breadth of interest, knowledge, and taste of a great bibliophile and student of Western American history. From this rich collection, now in The Newberry Library, Chicago, its former Curator, Colton Storm, has compiled a discriminating and representative Catalogue of the rarer and more unusual materials. Collectors, bibliographers, librarians, historians, and book dealers specializing in Americana will find the Graff Catalogue an interesting and essential tool. Detailed collations and binding descriptions are cited, and many of the more important works have been annotated by Mr. Graff and Mr. Storm. An extensive index of persons and subjects makes the book useful to the scholar as well as to the collector and dealer. The book is not a bibliography but rather a guide to rare or unique source materials now enriching The Newberry Library's outstanding holdings in American history.
