Anita is abducted from her home and is coerced into taking her fathers place in defending her mortal enemy Dante. He (Dante) holds Carolyn (her best friend) ransom for his insurance that she gets him a not guilty verdict as has been done in the past by her father. Dante takes Anita on a field trip to show her his true business dealings - to which he is so proud of. She experiences his way of life that no one should ever see. She witnessed his barbaric, brutal and torturous ways of how he acquires orphaned children. How he forces his captives to live in horrid conditions and what happens when he pillages a village. She sees how he mentally prepares and challenges young boys to become the best soldiers in his command through elimination tournaments, and how he trains and molds young girls to bring the best value on the black market for his efforts. Her heart aches for those who suffer the pain and destruction he leaves in his wake. But the worst part of what she witnesses is how he uses and abuses her best friend and what happens to the Caucasians girls before entering the world of the black market. How is she supposed to accomplish such a feat after seeing such heinous crimes?

Book excerpt: An “entertaining” look at the psychology and neuroscience behind the act of influencing others (Kirkus Reviews). People try to persuade us every day. From the news to the Internet to coworkers and family, everyone and everything wants to influence our thoughts in some way. And in turn, we hope to persuade others. Understanding the dynamics of persuasion can help us to achieve our own goals—and resist being manipulated by those who don’t necessarily have our best interests at heart. Psychologist Kevin Dutton has identified a powerful strain of immediate, instinctual persuasion, a method of influence that allows people to disarm skepticism, win arguments, and close deals. With a combination of astute methods and in-depth research in the fields of psychology and neuroscience, Dutton’s fascinating and provocative book: Introduces the natural super-persuaders in our midst: Buddhist monks, magicians, advertisers, con men, hostage negotiators, and even psychopaths. Reveals which hidden pathways in the brain lead us to believe something even when we know it’s not true. Explains how group dynamics can make us more tolerant or deepen our extremism. Illuminates the five elements of SPICE (simplicity, perceived self-interest, incongruity, confidence, and empathy) for instantly effective persuasion. “[Split-Second Persuasion] offers some powerful insights into the art and science of getting people to do what you want.” —New Scientist

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of Paris Never Leaves You, Ellen Feldman's The Living and the Lost is a gripping story of a young German Jewish woman who returns to Allied Occupied Berlin from America to face the past and unexpected future “A deeply satisfying and truly adult novel.” —Margot Livesey, New York Times best-selling author of The Flight of Gemma Hardy Millie (Meike) Mosbach and her brother David, manage to escape to the States just before Kristallnacht, leaving their parents and little sister in Berlin. Millie attends Bryn Mawr on a special scholarship for non-Aryan German girls and graduates to a magazine job in Philadelphia. David enlists in the army and is eventually posted to the top-secret Camp Ritchie in Maryland, which trains German-speaking men for intelligence work. Now they are both back in their former hometown, haunted by ghosts and hoping against hope to find their family. Millie, works in the office responsible for rooting out the most dedicated Nazis from publishing; she is consumed with rage at her former country and its citizens, though she is finding it more difficult to hate in proximity. David works trying to help displaced persons build new lives, while hiding his more radical nighttime activities from his sister. Like most of their German-born American colleagues, they suffer from conflicts of rage and guilt at their own good fortune, except for Millie’s boss, Major Harry Sutton, who seems much too eager to be fair to the Germans. Living and working in bombed-out Berlin, a latter day Wild West where drunken soldiers brawl; the desperate prey on the unsuspecting; spies ply their trade; werewolves, as unrepentant Nazis were called, scheme to rise again; black markets thrive, and forbidden fraternization is rampant, Millie must come to terms with a decision she made as a girl in a moment of crisis, and with the enigmatic sometimes infuriating Major Sutton who is mysteriously understanding of her demons. Atmospheric and page-turning, The Living and the Lost is a story of love, survival, and forgiveness of others and of self.

It is essential that a beginning student have an insight into the criminal justice process as a prerequisite to proper understanding of many of the cases on substantive criminal law. The Sixth Edition also looks at the conceptual battles that surround crimes that require an intent to cause death in cases where an AIDS sufferer seeks to transmit the disease, the assisted-suicide issue & right-to-die cases, & whether the "born alive" rule should be retained.
