Book excerpt: A split argon-oxygen decarburized (AOD) heat of 4340 steel was used to compare the relative effectiveness of the VAR (Vacuum Arc Remelting) and ESR (Electroslag Remelting) processes on ballistic performance. Forgings of VAR and ESR 4340 steel were rolled into plates with thicknesses of 0.64, 0.81, 0.96, 1. 12, and 1.27 cm (0.25, 0.32, 0.38, 0.44, and 0.50 inch). Plates were heat treated to a tempered martensite microstructure by oil quenching and then tempering at 163, 171, 191, or 204 C (325, 340, 375, or 400 F). The protection limit (V sub 50) for a .50 caliber AP M2 threat was determined for ESR and VAR 4340 steel plates of several thickness-tempering temperature combinations. Results indicate that over the thickness range studied the protection limit for ESR 4340 steel tempered at 171 C (340 F) is equal to or greater than that of the VAR 4340 steel. Also, within the tempering temperature range studied the 171 C (340 C) temper provides the greatest protection against the .50 caliber threat for 0.64-cm (0.25 inch) thick ESR 4340 steel plates. There is a greater tendency for VAR processed 0.64-cm (0.25 inch) thick plates tempered at 163 and 171 C (325 and 340 F) to crack when impacted by this treat then comparable ESR processed plates. Further, for both ESR and VAR 4340 steel plates tempered at 171 C (340 F) it is found that the penetration mechanism gradually changes from petalling to plugging as plate thickness increases. Book excerpt: Large gun tube forgings are presently produced from statically-cast electric arc furnace steel ingots. Vacuum Arc Remelting (VAR) and Electroslag Remelting (ESR) are two secondary refining processes applied to conventionally produced steel. A comparison of VAR and ESR is made with basic electric arc steelmaking, via a review of current literature. These refining processes greatly improve the structure and properties of low alloy steel. Gas and inclusion contents are lowered, and mechanical properties and soundness are improved. VAR is a simpler and more developed process than ESR, but the latter is more flexible and versatile. In addition ESR produces a much higher yield.

Book excerpt: The transverse (T-L) and longitudinal (L-T) mechanical properties of Electroslag Refined (ESR) and Vacuum Arc Remelt (VAR) 300-M steel were measured. These were related to the microstructural and chemical differences which resulted from the two melting processes. It was found that the ESR process resulted in a cleaner steel. Impurity elements were reduced and inclusions were finer and more evenly dispersed. The Charpy impact energies of the ESR steel were nearly doubled those of the VAR. Also the fracture toughness of the ESR 300-M showed no temper embrittlement in the 350 to 500°C tempering range whereas that of the VAR material did.

Paton Electric Welding Institute in Kiev, one of the pre-eminent institutes of the USSR. The Paton Institute, internationally famous for its entrepreneurial efforts in electrical welding processes, is also famous for its application of electrically based processes in melting and remelting of high alloy and high-temperature materials. These include the ESR (electroslag re melting) process, the ESC (electroslag casting) process, skull remelting based on electron-beam processes, plasma arc processes, and electric arc processes. Along with the ESR process for ingot production is the commercial plasma arc remelt process for specialty steels, particularly where high nitrogen contents may be desired, as in austenitic stainless steels. Major industrial centers are now scattered throughout the USSR and are a major factor in high-alloy, high strength, low- and high-temperature materials. The ESR process was developed in response to the Western development of the VAR (vacuum arc remelting) process for producing very highly alloyed materials during the growth period of the jet engine age. The V AR and ESR processes utilize different purification and refinement processes that are extremely critical in very highly, complexly alloyed superalloys and high-speed tool steels. In water-cooled remelt systems, they also achieve relatively rapid (directional) solidification, minimizing segregation and coarse phase separation of undesir able impurity elements or elements that tend to form coarse brittle phases.

Comparisons are made of electroslag remelted 4340 steel and electroslag and vacuum arc remelted 300M and 4340 steels. Electroslag remelted 300M steel at high strength levels can achieve the mechanical property levels obtained by vacuum arc remelting in the longitudinal orientation. However, the short transverse ductility of electroslag remelted 300M steel varies considerably and can be unacceptably low. Scanning electron microscopic examination of short transverse tensile specimens having good ductility did not reveal any fractographic differences that could be related to the heat treatment process. Impact energy varied with orientation. No improvement in stress corrosion cracking susceptibility was obtained over VAR 4340 steel. (Author).

Book excerpt: The objective of the present investigation is to determine the transverse engineering mechanical and fracture toughness properties of electroslag remelted high strength AISI 4340 steel in plate sizes 0.4 inch (10 mm), 1.0 inch (25 mm) and 1-7/8 inch (45 mm) and to correlate these properties with microstructural features. The results of the various tests (Double Ligament, Tensile, and Double Torsion) indicate that the difference between the longitudinal (X) and long transverse (Y) properties of heat 9060 (step-forged 1-7/8 and 1.0 inch plate portions) are at best minor in nature. The same is true with the 0.4 inch-thick cross-rolled ESR 4340 plate (heat 2780). The most significant property differences exist between X and Y direction properties on the one hand and those of through thickness (Z) direction on the other. On comparing the above results with data obtained for heat 9060 at other forging reductions, an increasing sensitivity of ductility (decrease) to increasing reduction is apparent in the Z direction. Scanning Electron Microscope work indicates that the degree of colonization present among the non-metallic inclusions present may be related to the range of ductility-related properties encountered in any particular orientation.
