Book excerpt: From the author of The Sandcastle Empire comes a sci-fi thriller that’s equal parts Illuminae and One of Us Is Lying. Lindley Hamilton has been the leader of the space station Lusca since every first generation crew member on board, including her mother, the commander, was killed by a deadly virus. Lindley always assumed she’d captain the Lusca one day, but she never thought that day would come so soon. And she never thought it would be like this—struggling to survive every day, learning how to keep the Lusca running, figuring out how to communicate with Earth, making sure they don’t run out of food. When a member of the surviving second generation dies from symptoms that look just like the deadly virus, though, Lindley feels her world shrinking even smaller. And as more people die, Lindley must face the terrifying reality—that either the virus has mutated, or one of their own is a killer.

Book excerpt: The problem with our nation’s schools today is not just the low test scores in basic reading and math—which are an obstacle for the economy, not to mention students’ futures. The challenge is that K-12 instruction has been hijacked by Critical Theorists who are “skeptical” of representative government and the freedoms we cherish. The debates over the retelling of America’s past, on display in local school board meetings as well as conflicts between the New York Times’ 1619 Project and President Donald Trump’s 1776 Commission, involve not just historical facts, but how Americans define their nation. This battle over our national identity is a cultural battle, involving schools—cultural institutions—and the ideas we all need to share to get along with our neighbors, raise families, and pursue the American Dream. “Jonathan Butcher is one of our sharpest and most insightful analysts writing about education today. The nation owes him a debt of gratitude for work demystifying an obscure academic field, critical race theory, and fearlessly following where it leads when imposed on our public schools: abandoning the cherished belief that education can be a means of uniting our diverse country and replacing it with a pedagogy of grievance and despair.” —Robert Pondiscio, Senior Fellow, American Enterprise Institute and author of How the Other Half Learns “Jonathan Butcher’s timely book on critical race theory addresses what I have described as the civil rights issue of our times. Too few Americans understand how this dangerous ideology and how it has seeped down into our K-12 educational system. Butcher’s book is part of a collective effort to educate the American people about the infiltration and indoctrination of our educational system.” —Dr. Carol M. Swain, a former tenured professor at Vanderbilt and Princeton Universities

Book excerpt: The end of the world is just the beginning ... The year is 3001, and history takes a critical turn when Earth is destroyed by a solar flare. As Dr. Leigh Lybrand and her colleagues explore ways to survive in orbit of Jupiter, dark matter rips open the fabric of space and time, allowing them to see parallel universes. When the visions reveal that a radical religious group planned Earth's destruction, Leigh must make a choice: Accept her fate or use what she's learned to save humanity; even if it means betraying the one closest to her in a parallel universe and sacrificing herself in this one.

Rising among the ranks on the ice, he had done well as Thunderbirds's star Left Wing within the Division 1 Hockey league. Well enough that he had signed an NHL contract which guaranteed his freedom from the gruesomely checkered past that had been his life. Just a few more months and he would be able to escape the gory truth hidden beneath years of lies. Everything was going perfectly as planned for Theo, until he met the one person that could change his fate in an instant: Enter Danica Ellis, a girl with a few dark secrets of her own. Having spent the past two years solely trying to survive whilst living under the intense scrutiny of her family and the public eye, she has had to cross a few lines of her own. As his teammate's younger sister, Danica is more trouble than Theo ever bargained for. Just one wrong look in her direction could send his carefully guarded heart spiraling. Bending more rules and pushing a few boundaries might just be the only way to save her from Hell, but will trying to protect her from the flames send both their lives up in smoke?

Book excerpt: When the mutilated remains of a young woman are found in an Appalachian Mountain cave, newly sworn-in deputy sheriff Brynn Callahan is forced to track down a killer driven by twisted motives . . . Not long after donning the uniform of the McCreary County Sheriff's department in Bone Gap, Tennessee, ex-Marine Brynn Callahan faces her first official homicide. On a cold February morning, a lone cross-country skier stumbles across the mutilated body of a young woman. Sent to investigate, Brynn is shocked when she recognizes the victim as a fellow Traveller, Maura Keene. Maura held a solid standing both within the Travellers’ insular community and among the settled townspeople—a fact that makes her murder all the more disturbing to Brynn, who also straddles the two worlds. After her trained K-9, Wilco, digs up human bones, and then a scrap of paper scrawled with arcane Latin phrases is uncovered, Brynn finds evidence leading her to question those closest to her—and closing the case becomes a deeply personal matter. While trying to suppress local superstitions and prejudices, Brynn discovers that Maura was keeping a dangerous secret. And as the bones Wilco found are analyzed by forensics, Brynn harbors the troubling suspicion that she knows who they belong to. Still struggling with PTSD, Brynn must put her career on the line and her life at risk to find justice for a woman not unlike herself—haunted by her past, and caught in a vicious cycle she may never escape . . .

Book excerpt: A teenage girl faces her evil nemesis in the Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland-inspired trilogy that “should sweep readers down the rabbit hole” (Publishers Weekly). After surviving a disastrous battle at prom, Alyssa has embraced her madness and gained perspective. She’s determined to rescue her two worlds and the people and netherlings she loves. Even if it means challenging Queen Red to a final battle of wills and wiles . . . and even if the only way to Wonderland, now that the rabbit hole is closed, is through the looking-glass world—a parallel dimension filled with mutated and violent netherling outcasts. In the final installment of the wildly popular Splintered trilogy, Alyssa and her dad journey into the heart of magic and mayhem in search of her mom and to set right all that’s gone wrong. Together with Jeb and Morpheus, they must salvage Wonderland from the decay and destruction that has ensnared it. But if they succeed and come out alive, can everyone truly have their happily ever after? Praise for the Splintered trilogy “Alyssa is one of the most unique protagonists I’ve come across in a while. Splintered is dark, twisted, entirely riveting, and a truly romantic tale.” —USA Today “Brilliant, because it is ambitious, inventive, and often surprising.” —The Boston Globe “A dark beauty fills the novel’s pages, which will mesmerize teens with a taste for magic, romance or suspense. Unhinged lays the groundwork for a third book where anything could happen—it is Wonderland, after all.” —Shelf Awareness

Book excerpt: Still Here: Memoirs of Trauma, Illness and Loss explores the history, ethics, and cross-cultural range of memoirs focusing on illness, death, loss, displacement, and other experiences of trauma. From Walt Whitman’s Civil War diaries to kitchen table survivor-to-survivor storytelling following Hurricane Katrina, from social media posts from a refugee detention centre, to poetry by exiles fleeing war zones, the collection investigates trauma memoir writing as healing, as documentation of suffering and disability, and as political activism. Editors Bunty Avieson, Fiona Giles and Sue Joseph have brought together this scholarly collection as a sequel to their earlier Mediating Memory (Routledge 2018), providing a closer look at the specific concerns of trauma memoir, including conflict and intergenerational trauma; the therapeutic potential and risks of trauma life writing; its ethical challenges; and trauma memoir giving voice to minority experiences.

Book excerpt: In the second installment of the SPLICED series, sixteen-year-old Jimi Corcoran risks her life to clear a friend's name--and uncovers the horrific truth about one of the most powerful men in the world. All Jimi wants is pick up the pieces of her life and move on. She never intended to uncover a conspiracy, or become a hero for chimera rights-- she just wanted to protect her best friend, Del. But now she's a public figure, and she can't quite shake the spotlight. . . or her suspicion that she's being followed. Still, when a strange chimera shows up, half-dead with nothing but an odd hospital bracelet to identify him, of course Jimi tries to help. But everything goes wrong-- and her friend Dr. Guzman is arrested for murder. Desperate to prove his innocence, Jimi does some digging, and discovers that the sick chimera came from a hospital owned by Howard Wells. . . . The businessman who pioneered the Genetic Heritage Act, which sought to label all chimeras as inhuman, and undeserving of basic rights. Has he really had a change of heart? Teaming up with her chimera friends Rex and Claudia, Jimi sets out to investigate Wells' hospital-- but discovers the seemingly-charitable endeavor is hiding an extensive, dark secret. To save lives and shut down a criminal operation, Jimi and her friends will have to risk everything-- and incur the wrath of Howard Wells himself. Action-packed and haunting, this sequel to Spliced digs deeper into a gritty, near-future world in which lawless science is a rich man's game-- and Jimi and her friends are unwilling players. This beautiful hardcover edition features a texturally embossed, spot-gloss jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J. R. R. Tolkien is perhaps best known for The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, but it is in The Silmarillion that the true depth of Tolkien's Middle-earth can be understood. The Silmarillion was written before, during, and after Tolkien wrote The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. A collection of stories, it provides information alluded to in Tolkien's better known works and, in doing so, turns The Lord of the Rings into much more than a sequel to The Hobbit, making it instead a continuation of the mythology of Middle-earth. Verlyn Flieger's expanded and updated edition of Splintered Light, a classic study of Tolkien's fiction first published in 1983, examines The Silmarillion and The Lord of the Rings in light of Owen Barfield's linguistic theory of the fragmentation of meaning. Flieger demonstrates Tolkien's use of Barfield's concept throughout the fiction, showing how his central image of primary light splintered and refracted acts as a metaphor for the languages, peoples, and history of Middle-earth.

Book excerpt: Terrifying nightmares and overwhelming shame brought Kathy to counseling, where she hoped to find the truth about the past she didn't remember. She didn't know she had about seventy personalities. As we pulled back the layers of her life, she remembered many times, beginning in her early childhood, when her mother took her to cult "churches" in the middle of the night. The leaders planted lies and dark secrets deep in her mind and used drugs and mind control to twist biblical truths and convince Kathy her "sweet blood" paid for their sins. During the rituals, the cult leaders called themselves God, the Father, God, the Son, and God, the Holy Ghost. This book chronicles Kathy's twelve-year counseling journey using excerpts from her many journals. She penned her prayers to Jesus onto tear-stained pages and communicated with her child alters by writing to them in these journals. She gave the journals to me to help me write the book. She doesn't want them in her house. The healing journey took Kathy through fierce spiritual battles, where she developed a deeper understanding of Jesus' love for her and His power against the forces of darkness. As a young wife and mother, she had to take care of her children while she healed her fractured self. This brave woman conquered many spiritual battles lasting hours in the counseling office and then went home to her family, still half her real self and half a child alter about three years old. Often she still felt like one of the little girl alters who showed up in counseling. Her mind had been splintered by the lies and abuse of the cult. The memories of her horrible past could cause her to be sabotaged at any moment and triggered her mind to believe she was still a little girl calling for her mother, a mother who only hurt her. When her mind was clear, she could still revert to the lies of the past cult abuse. The reader will meet Kay Lynn, Faith, Amber, Baby, and many more. Kathy's story tells of love, faith, and courage. Jesus never left her alone in the battles. When she finished a memory, He would speak truth to her mind and soul. I am reminded of the phrase, "The Warrior is a Child." This book is not based on a true story. It is a true story told and written by Kathy and her alters in the wee hours of the morning. The only parts that are not either said or written by her are the ones said by the counselor. This story is intense and definitely not for anyone under 17 years old. If you are a cult survivor, please check with your therapist before reading. This is a story of intense spiritual warfare done in a counseling office and alone in a bedroom at home. It is also the story of a courageous woman a with a strong desire to heal. She knew she could only heal with the help of the True Lord Jesus and she finds her truth in Him.

Lewis were grounded in the argument from reason (being a form of revelation that predates nature and relates to the divine; i.e., the Word of God, Christ the Logos). These essays provide some understanding of the essentials to Lewis's philosophical theology--that is, the essentia, "in the highest degree." Lewis's corpus can seem disparate, but here we find unity in his aims, objectives, and methodology, a consistency that demonstrates the deep roots of his philosophical theology in Scripture, Greek philosophy, patristic and medieval theology, and some of the Reformers, all framed by a reasoned discipline from a perceptive and critical mind: method and form, content and reason, for the glory of God. From an analysis of reason to the evidence of Christ as the light of the world across human endeavors and religions, a doctrine of election, and an understanding of Scripture ("the Philosophy of the Incarnation," as Lewis termed it), in fundamental arguments with various modern/liberal theologians, we find evidence for the actuality of the incarnation: the divinity of Christ.

He may physically be an adult, but still wonders, "Am I a man?" When John Sowers twin daughters were born, he felt exposed, thinking manhood was out of reach. He needed direction. Following in the steps of ordinary men and the heroes of history, legend and myth, he uncovered a new and ancient road. Walk with John on his personal quest to discover the "wild masculine" and to become all that God intended men to be. From a thrilling brush with Kodiak bears in Alaska, to a war hero who rescued his comrades in the Valley of Death, from mythic heroes of Tolkien, to the footsteps of the One, True Myth - as Jesus walked from village into the wilderness, and back again. Stunningly written, this revolutionary book calls older men out of complacency and younger men out of confusion. It calls all men into the greater Story - into a life of sacrificial love, holy defiance, and clear purpose.
