It is demonstrated that our most secret thoughts can be known to, and be revealed by the intelligence which is thus surrounding us and communing with us. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Spiritualism, Vol. 1 of 2: A History and a Criticism To Dr. R. Hodgson also I owe much. Alike by natural endowment and by his unrivalled experience, Dr. Hodgson is probably better qualified than any living person to deal critically with the history of Spiritualism; nor did I venture to set about the present work until I had ascertained that he was not prepared to undertake the task himself. I had hoped, however, that he would have been able to contribute to the book his own version of his investigations in slate writing, and an account of the Eusapia seances, with his own criticisms. Pressure of other work prevented the fulfilment of this scheme but my own account of these matters is based, as the reader will see, almost exclusively on Dr. Hodgson's writings, supplemented by his criticisms and suggestions on the completed chapters. Not to Dr. Hodgson alone, but also to the late Frederic Myers, I, in common with all others who are engaged on the investigation of these obscure and widely neglected problems, am indebted not only for much of the material used, but for the means of using it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Spirituality, Vol. 1 With the exception of the Salesian School, the others are divided between the great Catholic nations which filled the political stage of Europe during that period: Spain, Italy, and France. Indeed, the principle of nationality asserted itself in a very remarkable way, especially from the time of the Renaissance. This tendency of each nation to converge upon the lines of its own genius and language and religion reacted upon every manifestation of its life, and therefore upon its spirituality. Hence we actually find in recent times a Spanish spirituality, an Italian spirituality, and a French spirituality, a spirituality which is fundamentally one and the same so far as it is Catholic, but differs in the way in which it is conceived and presented. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Religion of Ancient Egypt is a classic religious studies text by the great pioneering English egyptologist, W. M. Flinders Petrie. Before dealing with the special varieties of the Egyptians' belief in gods, it is best to try to avoid a misunderstanding of their whole conception of the supernatural. The term god has come to tacitly imply to our minds such a highly specialised group of attributes, that we can hardly throw our ideas back into the more remote conceptions to which we also attach the same name.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first of a series of reprints by Arouca Press. It features an exact reproduction of the interior from the original work published in 1955. It includes a new and classically designed cover. Excerpt from the Preface: "All priests know of many excellent manuals of theology in Latin. Many, however, confess that their long years in the ministry have seen them lose their mastery of that language and, as a consequence, the urge to pick up their seminary textbooks is not too strong. Our own teaching experience forces us to admit that many seminarians whose knowledge of Latin is insufficient fail to derive all that they should from their course in theology. Then, too, with the recent growth of interest in theology, a considerable number of nuns, brothers, and educated laymen who wish to study theology scientifically find the door barred to them because they do not know Latin. We sincerely hope that this work will make available to all interested students a full course of dogmatic theology in English."

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spiritualism Answered by Science The crucial tests applied by the skill and science of Mr. Crookes confirmed the results of a series of other experiments, conducted with care and caution, which had been instituted for the purpose of investigating if any and what of the alleged phenomena were real and, if real, whether they are physical or spiritual, natural or super natural. The conclusion from that patient inquiry has been, that many of the alleged phenomena are real, though some are delusions and others impostures that the Power dignified by the title of Spiritual, because attributed to the presence and action of spirits of the dead, is in fact a Psychic Force proceeding from the human structure and directed by the human intelligence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Institutes of the Christian Religion, Vol. 1 The doctrines of the Church are the approved interpretation of the articles of the Christian Creed. The Spontaneous endeavor of thought to ascertain the relations of doctrines and reduce them to unity in a self-consistent system issues in the science of theology; and that it may answer the demands of sound reason theological science requires that it be determined from Within and animated at all points by a central truth.
